Lebron also has an extremely high motor, and that was never in question. They question Lebron's courage in the clutch, but never his motor. Kobe ... Lebron ... it was blindingly obvious they NEEDED to distinguish themselves as the best.

Not at all, like I said, do you remember who was in that draft? Its all speculation, but the point is the pre draft speculation was that Kobe was going to be a major start point blank. Feelong hes going to be a major star doesnt mean he HAD to go #1 and there were a number of factors in his draft position including him basically saying who he wanted to play for the Lakers. His draft position wasnt as cut and dry as you are trying to portray it.
