Kyrie Irving trade rumors: Boston Celtics reportedly placed 'obligatory call' to Cleveland Cavaliers, but deal seems unlikely

The Boston Celtics are on a long list of teams that have placed an "obligatory call" to the Cleveland Cavaliers about Kyrie Irving, according to ESPN's Zach Lowe.

In an informative piece detailing some of the Cavaliers' options, Lowe added that the Celtics, like "most teams," have let Cleveland "know they would like to be kept in the loop."

Boston president of basketball operations Danny Ainge should be doing his due diligence, checking in on any disgruntled star. But even with the lines of communication open, a deal between the two teams should not be expected or even considered much of a realistic possibility. Lowe believes a Boston-Cleveland trade "seems unlikely."

As the top two teams in the Eastern Conference, the Celtics and Cavaliers presumably won't want to risk fortifying each other. For that reason alone, it would be shocking for them to strike a blockbuster deal. Even if they were willing to ignore their standing as chief Eastern Conference competitors, the Celtics and Cavaliers would have a tough time finding common ground.

While it's neat to debate whether a team should prefer Irving or Isaiah Thomas, it's not easy to create a realistic trade proposal involving both players. Because of Thomas' small contract, the Celtics would need to add at least one more valuable piece (maybe Jae Crowder) to any offer. While Irving's age (25), contract length (two more years plus a player option) and playoff history are all preferable to Thomas', it would be rare to give up additional value to acquire a player at the same position coming off a less productive regular season.

Irving is supremely talented. He has a track record of playoff brilliance and, unlike Thomas, no uncertainty regarding his hip. But after several seasons alongside James, there are still real questions about Irving's game. Can he lift up his teammates? Can he be more than one of the world's most dangerous isolation scorers? How much will Irving miss James? And in what new ways can Irving flourish without James?

The answers aren't clear. Even if they were, it would be difficult for Boston and Cleveland to put together a sensible trade. In my opinion, at least, this proposal would not fall into the category:

It would be misguided for the Celtics to give up a similarly productive player to Irving (Thomas), one of the NBA's best contracts (Crowder) and one of the league's top assets (the Nets pick). Maybe there's a balance to be found somewhere, but this offer would not be it.

It would be helping the Cavaliers now (if Thomas isn't better than Irving by himself, Thomas and Crowder are) and in the future (hello, lottery pick from Brooklyn). It would be Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge giving James more reasons to stay in the Eastern Conference beyond his current contract. It would be Cleveland's front office doing this to Ainge:

No, no, no, no, no. And no. Ainge only gets dunked on by his son.

This feels like a more reasonable offer:

Maybe throw a non-Brooklyn or -LA pick in there. But, really, any theoretical offer feels far-fetched. The last thing Ainge would ever want to do is entice James to stay in Cleveland. Ainge should be praying every night for a Western Conference team to lure James next summer, thereby opening the door for Boston to rule the East. Ainge should desperately want the Cavaliers to find weak value on the trade market. He should want the Cavaliers to collapse.

Considering how wobbly Cleveland seems now, the Irving trade request could ultimately benefit Boston. But it would be stunning if the Celtics land him. Actually, I would bet just about anything they won't.

So according to SAS they MAD at Lebron for leaking this?

But have no proof.

Cause Dan Gilbert and the f*cked up non existent management probably didn't drop the ball on this FIRST?

Or maybe an ANGRY Griffin?

And its not like they have any really really good and well paid NBA insiders like ummm Woj to find out stuff right?

Naw...

these good white folk wouldn't do that.

but the Bro who didnt even tell D Wade where he was going met with Gilert secretly has advocated for ALL his teammates contracts in the past adn has his OWN management company
would hurt his reputation for Kyrie...

who is the one who STARTED thsii whole damn mess HIMSELF in the first place by asking for a trade?

Yeah OK

you asked for a f*cking TRADE...

how they going to ACCOMPLISH that without TALKING TO OTHER TEAMS?!??!?!

Apparently Kyrie wanted to get traded and front to the media like it was the team and Lebron that wanted him gone once it happened.

The Cavs should try to work a Devin Booker for Kyrie trade. They will get a young wing who can score. The Suns will need to move Bledsoe or Knight.

Another option is getting Avery Bradley from Detroit and another piece.

Ok

But the part we gonna concentrate on is the fact Kyrie started this...

HE asked to be traded.
Lebron didn't WANT him gone.

He ASKED and DEMANDED to leave.

Someone still gotta explain how any of this is Lebron fault?

I dont think anyone but the trolls and Lebron haters consider it remotely Brons fault.

You be surprised how many of them hators and trolls exist.

Kyrie wanna get his Kobe on and put up 50 shots a game and shit. Should have traded his white girl loving Duke Blue Devil ass right after the finals. We probably could have gotten a high pick THIS draft

Mind you he led the team in hosts taken and scoring this season. Id ship his ass out west where he would be buried on a shit team and never sniffing the postseason or all star weekend again. The guy is near zero self awareness.. Its like he has no idea the team literally went to shit whenever Bron missed a game or went to the sideline to tie his fucking shoe.

You hit the damn nail right on the head

Kyrie trying to be a clone just like Kobe tried to clone MJ.

But can someone please post Kyrie numbers in Cleveland without lebron...

Amd compare just the REGULAR season numbers to Wall and CP3?

Cause REAL TALK

is Kyrie even in the top 4 of point guards?

I wouldn't do that if I was the Suns. I'll give the Cavs anybody but Booker. Booker's young, can score with the best of them & he isn't near his full potential yet.

Well according to BSPN's Stephen A Smith and his "sources", LeBron leaked the trade request information.

Right. Nigga when it was "your" team and Bron was on the bench, one of these talking heads talking bout "oh they got players that fit LeBron". Bullshit he a top guard but he happy with the one ring now he wanna go pad stats. Who in their right mind would want to go to Knicks??

Don't forget who the got the front office job with the suns....James Jones.

Rose just signed with the Cavs.

I like this for the 2.1mill...I would've thought other teams would've jumped at dude for those low numbers

Rose's deal shows his commitment to Cleveland

Despite the potential to earn more in another city, Derrick Rose has signed a one-year, $2.1 million deal with Cleveland. Dave McMenamin explains the impact Rose will have on the Cavs and how this season is a make-or-break for Cleveland.

Screamin A getting that info from Kyrie camp.

yup

Kyrie can try all he want...

but if he think he aint gonna get that work? HE s sorely mistaken

EVERYONE had to pay dues...

he is too.

Lebron left and EACH time got that team a ring...

KD got KILLED got that ring.

Kyrie wanna go full Black Mamba?

Yo NEVER go full Black Mamba.
