Krs - one is the last of his generation. One of the best performers and historians of the craft. His definition of hip hop cannot be denied. His problem is ever since he left Jive, he hasn't had the machine behind him and as a result most people don't have a clue who he is and what he means to the culture, So like Nelly, they disrespect him (poorly disrespect him at that). His comments on Def Jam are true. but with that he doesn't dis the culture as a whole (or even a single artist for that matter.) He is just recognizing the long term effects that the Def Jam format has had on the industry.

If you want to get rid or totally turn down the Krs-One message, Someone else with more fans and sales than him will have to speak up more than when they are promoting there next album. But since most of those people are the face of their respective labels, that shit will never happen.

The Last album I remember buying from him was "Return of the Boom Bap" in 93. After that I think "Rapture" and "smoke Mad izm" were the only songs thereafter that I truly rocked. I respect the dude and not just because he calls himself the teacher...If I go back and listen to any of his older records, he put it out there in past and present day relevant terms:

"You got wealthy artists spending money loosely, you ask about they culture, they talkin bout 'Gucci."

"A large sum of white people died for blacks, trying hard to stop racial attacks, if blacks and whites didn't argue the most, they can clearly see the government is screwing us both."

Cmon now...he does go off the handle but his words are "out there."

To the bold...It truly can for those who really know what hip hop is. He states (which is really him quoting someone else) that hip hop is DJs, MCs, and Graffiti (which he says are the elements of Hip Hop).

Hip Hop is a created culture that was meant for the upliftment of African Americans, the awareness of the system and their surroundings, and an escape from America's harsh reality or prejudice. It was created in hopes to unify African Americans. It's not DJs because with or without them Hip Hop is, although djs like Afrika Bambaataa and Grand Master Flash helped create a signature sound that could claimed by Hip Hop. It's not Graffiti (unless those paintings have valid messages) because with or without it Hip Hop is. Note: Hip Hop birthed Graffiti it is not an element of Hip Hop. Hip Hop is MCs because without them there is no Hip Hop (note: both Afrika Bambaataa and DJ Grand Master Flash were doing MCing...talking over the music they're playing controlling the crowd) which is what Rakim tried to explain in the sound "Move The Crowd" which was a definition of MC. Hip Hop is Drum driven (the beat) which is where DJs come in again (using (an instrumental break in a song which is what a break beat is), mixing (blends), and scratching someone else's music to create something for the MC to speak over). Hip Hop is dancing whether people know it or not...because it wasn't meant for you to JUST stand their and listen. Hip Hop birthed the high top and flat fades. The culture of apparel didn't come until the mid 80s which Hip Hop birthed (dress code: relax gear...anything that's relaxing that's not considered contemporary, casual, or dressy...whatever you wore had to have a sporty look to it. Which is why boots, sneakers, easy walking sporty shoes (like Wallabies shoes and Bally shoes), hoodies and baggy jeans were so relevant). Hip Hop is a rekindled culture from Africa (Chants and songs with heritage or religious messages over the beat of the drums while a tribal dance took place). It's a tridition that's in our blood without us truly knowing the connection. Notice how so many don't want to recognize it as a culture but yet want to preach pro-blackness.

This is what I've been trying to tell people about (marketing and promoting). If artists don't have the right promotion and they're not marketed right...they go nowhere. I learned that when 2 of the hitmen (major record label owners) explained that to me back in 1995. He's the evidence of it and Foxy Brown because "Broken Silence" was a hot album but wasn't promoted, so she didn't sell.

This is not correct because 1) he's venting and 2) the mother label has the most say (Universal) but those that don't know that will agree with KRS. Russel fought for his artist more than anyone knows but at the end of the day...Russel took the risk while Universal called the shots. Note: majority of urban music is from Universal...Interscope, Def Jam, Motown, Uptown, MCA, Geffen, Island, etc...
