At the time they thought Deng was going to be an all star caliber type of player but that never happened. Even if the trade would of happened and they let Deng go Kobe still would of been on a decent squad without Deng. If he went to Chicago, and done so the way everyone else has done it, there wouldn't be as much a backlash, and he wouldn't be facing the criticism he is now.

The difference between Kobe and Lebron is that one wants that pressure, and the other does not.

If Lebron was drafted in 1996 and traded to LA, he and Shaq would have had a different relationship than Shaq and Kobe. Lebron wouldn't have a problem playing with Shaq, with Shaq getting most of the glory as they won titles.

Shaq would have a problem with Lebron, eventually because that's Shaq's mo.

So no, Kobe wouldn't have left to go play with another player of Kobe's caliber, unlike Lebron who left to play with someone of his own.

However their situations are different. Would Lebron have wanted to win on his own after winning three straight with another top 5 player? Quite possibly.
