quotes:

The film Coconut Revolution is a splendid transformation of a civilisation. It is indicative of the many benefits derived from nature which many nations have neglected, choosing instead to pursue building bombs, nuclear weapons, ammunitions for war and the insanity of terrorism, racism etc.
Kwesi, Ghana

I wish to thank you for your informative account of the Bougainvillean struggle (Coconut Revolution). I was posted to Bougainville in 2000 as a peace monitor, and met some of the fighters you highlighted in the film. Their way of life is unique and the film brings out what an inspirational struggle they had against colonialism, exploitation and environmental degradation. I only wish the film had been extended to detail the Bougainvillean struggle beyond 1998 and made more of the disgraceful involvement of the Australian military in the fighting.

after watching the movie above mentionend...swollow this:

i checked a bit around...and found this:

The Africanisation of the South Pacific
Ben Reilly. Australian Journal of International Affairs. Canberra: Nov 2000.Vol.54, Iss. 3; pg. 261, 8 pgs

"...As these facts suggest, it is hard to escape the conclusion that we are today witnessing the progressive 'Africanisation' of the South Pacific region. 'Africanisation' refers to four inter-related phenomena that have long been associated with violent conflict and the failure of democratic government in Africa:

* the growing tensions in the relationship between civil regimes and military forces;

* the intermixture between ethnic identity and the competition for control of natural resources as factors driving conflicts;

* the weakness of basic institutions of governance such as prime ministers, parliaments and, especially, political parties; and

* the increasing centrality of the state as a means of gaining wealth and of accessing and exploiting resources...."

"Africanization" in the Pacific: Blaming Others for Disorder in the Periphery?
David Chappell. Comparative Studies in Society and History. Cambridge: Apr 2005.Vol.47, Iss. 2; pg. 286

Abstract (Document Summary)

Recent crises in Oceania, especially the military coups, civil wars, and armed secession movements in ethnically-diverse Melanesia in the southwest Pacific, have inspired a new wave of criticisms of indigenous regimes and cultures by metropolitan aid donors and security experts. As outside peacekeepers withdrew from Bougainville in 2003, ending its fifteen-year secession dispute with Papua New Guinea (PNG), other foreign military and police forces arrived in the war-torn Solomon Islands and publicly displayed their modern weaponry. Australian Prime Minister John Howard, with support from New Zealand, the United Nations and the Pacific Forum, has vowed not to fail his Pacific neighbors, where he says economic collapse, government corruption, and lawlessness require remedial action. Ben Reilly, of the National Centre for Development Studies (NCDS) in Canberra, has said, we are today witnessing the progressive Africanisation of the South Pacific region. French geographer Francois Doumenge has applied that same racial label to Melanesia, which he calls a black hole, arguing that violent vendettas are a distinctive trait of the dark-skinned Melanesian peoples, which the Anglo-Saxon (British and Australian) removal of colonial constraints has allowed to resurface: Order based on positive law is a notion foreign to Melanesian societies.

so to whom it may concern (imho mr. mooney),
think twice when u refer to arabs like sand"N"s or diss other pepz cause they have no bling, no ride, no air con, don't know whut gang signs are, don't have an "affluent" lifestyle like u etc.

BECAUSE YOU MAY LEARN SOMETHING FROM THEM!

because as u see above in the post..other pepz around the block may have an other (hidden) agenda while u dissin and spittin on ur & foreign folks

Robert Newmans History of Oil

700 MB

Robert Newman gets to grips with the wars and politics of the last hundred years - but rather than adhering to the history we were fed at school, the places oil centre stage as the cause of all commotion. This innovative history programme is based around Robert Newman's stand-up act and supported by resourceful archive sequences and stills with satirical impersonations of historical figures from Mayan priests to Archduke Ferdinand. Quirky details such as a bicycle powered street lamp on the stage brings home the pertinent question of just how we are going to survive when the world's oil supplies are finally exhausted.

Black Power

Pandora's Box was a six part 1992 BBC documentary television series written and produced by Adam Curtis. This is the 5th episode called Black Power.

A look at how former Ghanaian leader Kwame Nkrumah set Africa ablaze with his vision of a new industrial and scientific age. At the heart of his dream was to be the huge Volta dam, generating enough power to transform West Africa into an advanced utopia. But as his grand experiment took shape, it brought with it dangerous forces Nkrumah couldn't control, and he slowly watched his metropolis of science sink into corruption and debt.

The Slavery Business

How to Make a Million from Slavery (Part1 of 3)

A drama based on the life of British slave trader Henry Lascelles, the Robert Maxwell of his day and one of the richest businessmen of the eighteenth century. His descendants are now cousins of the Queen. Unlike previous dramas, this film controversially explores the lives of the white men who built this huge trade.

London, 1744 and Henry Lascelles is promoting his latest money making venture, a floating slave factory ship that aims to make the storage and sale of slaves even more efficient, and provide enormous financial returns. However, Lascelles ambitions are jeopardised when government inspector Robert Dinwiddie is instructed to investigate him on allegations of fraud.

A deadly battle of wills develops, a fight between two determined and ambitious men that takes us from the sugar plantations of Barbados to the coffee houses and taverns of London, culminating in the case coming before the highest court in the land.

The Slavery Business

Sugar Dynasty (Part 2 of 3)

The second programme in this series begins with a powerful drama-documentary telling the story of the Beckford dynasty, one the wealthiest of the families who ran Britain's first global business - slavery.

Using a unique set of family records, it shows how the Beckfords ruthlessly ran their sugar plantations in Jamaica to wring vast profits out of their thousands of slaves. It also tells the story of how lavishly they spent their money back in Britain in an attempt to join the aristocracy and how they eventually became embroiled in the sexual and financial scandals that would destroy them. Contains scenes which some viewers may find disturbing.

Breaking the Chains (Part 3 of 3)

The third and final part of this series tells the story of how slavery came to an end.

Today William Wilberforce is considered a hero, the man who ended the slave trade, but there's another story that's been hidden for 200 years. Although opposed to the slave trade, Wilberforce believed that the 800,000 slaves owned by the British should remain in chains. He regarded them as unfit for freedom.

This programme uncovers the real heroes of the battle against slavery. They were radical political activists, many of them women; fiery evangelical preachers who worked amongst the slaves; and thousands of slaves themselves, who rose up in rebellion to break the chains of their own bondage.Contains scenes which some viewers may find disturbing.

JOHN DOE POPULAR FALLACIES (TRUE LIES)

John Doe is one of Cincinnati's foremost mixmasters, boasting membership in both the preeminent local turntable team, 1200 Hobos, and the national collective, Uneasy Alliance. On his latest "mixtape" release, the brilliant Popular Fallacies (True Lies), Doe shows an undying devotion to the art of turntablism and the history of Hip Hop in general. Fluidity is the key to a great mix album, and Doe's delivery is faucet-like, oozing forth like the soundtrack to the greatest party ever. Doe seems to have an encyclopedic knowledge of Hip Hop, instinctively dropping recognizable and obscure samples at just the right moment and tastily blending a plethora of varied beats with the tastemaking ingenuity of a master chef. It's Doe's organizational instinct that is most impressive on Fallacies, as he lovingly crafts each moment like a scholarly Jazz arranger. It's a lot to reel in, but Doe makes it all sound natural. In Doe's world, everyone's invited to the party, as Ted Koppel, Grandpa Simpson, Foreigner and Jack Nicholson mingle comfortably with A Tribe Called Quest, Public Enemy and James Brown. Cherish your invite. (MB) Grade: A +

Status Anxiety

Part 1 of 3

Philosopher and author Alain de Botton believes there's something the vast majority of people desire even more than money. Whatever their background or social class, whatever their age or country of origin, what they desperately crave is status.

In this three-episode series, as well as testing his theory in Britain, De Botton travels to the United States, to investigate status anxiety, asking why people are unable to curtail their painful aspirations and whether those at the bottom of society merit their position there as much as those at the top do theirs.

As well as examining the work of classical philosophers, de Botton develops his theory with the help of a Washington DC restaurant manager who considers himself destined to become a chat show host; motivational speaker Les Brown; homeless lady Jenny Lamont; and members of the Native American population.

De Botton's search for possible cures to status anxiety takes him to churches on both sides of the Atlantic; the bohemian world of punks, nudists and hippies who live by their own rules; and philosophers - such as Schopenhauer - who believe that other people's opinions are not always worthwhile.

Finally, he learns how a discovery of one's mortality can suddenly put the constitute elements of status, such as careers, possessions, appearance and fame, into perspective.

THE COCONUT REVOLUTION

Director: Dom Rotheroe
2002.UK

Bows and arrows against helicopter gunships, and bows win - with a little help from the coconut. This is Bougainville, a small island off the coast of Papua New Guinea and the site of the world's first successful ecological revolution. The world paid no attention when in the sixties the British company Rio Tinto Zinc bulldozed jungle in Bougainville and proceeded to dig the word's largest open-cast mine. Then in 1989 the indigenous inhabitants launched a remarkable and ultimately victorious revolt. Dodging bullets and evading the gunboat blockade that encircled the small island, filmmaker Dom Rotheroe documented this David and Goliath story of the 21st century.

SCRATCH

SCRATCH is a feature-length film/ DVD that explores the world of the hip-hop DJ. From the birth of hip-hop, when pioneering DJ's began extending breaks on their party records (which helped inspire break dancing and rap), to the invention of scratching and "beat-juggling" vinyl, to its recent explosion as a musical movement called "turntablism," it's a story of unknown underdogs and serious virtuosos who are radically changing the way we hear, play and create music.
