MJ music catolog had it been a single entity would have sold for hundreds of millions of dollars but it is hard to gauge because it was all in the Sony/ATV with 1000s of other artits music which the estate sold to Sony for $750 mil, MIJAC which has his recording was valued by a judge at $114 million after the IRS valued it at $482 million. The estate got his entire deal reduced from 1.1 billion down to a couple hundred million and it was settled. Last info public on MIJAC is it brings in $30 million a year just from his recordings so if it was sold it would be in my estimation worth $600-$1 billion to own MJ entire music catolog including Thriller.

He's not the first. Bigger names have sold their catalogs. U need good stream numbers to make money and old "records" aren't selling like that.

Maybe his catalogue was worth more down the line if he continued to manage it himself.. But maybe he did the math on some more passive plans and projects he has in mind for 50-100 mill up front. It's not that hard to imagine.
