The stakes in the election just went up 10 fold. Candidates are going to throw out names they would elect to replace Scalia. Obama and the Dem candidate will be able to hammer the Repubs on Obstruction which could affect the downstream ticket.

Interesting times ahead.

Just when you thought things could not get any crazier in this country. The REpubs will surely try to block but they cant hold the supreme court in limbo for shy of a year. This will bring people out in drove to the election. This is a game changer.
 
I wonder though... strategically, what can he do to make them hurt or force their hand (outside of saying loudly everyday that people need to vote in huge numbers so that a non-conservative wins in Nov)?


Obama has a chance to really fuck the GOP with this if he plays it correctly. People on here are always talking about Chess, but this is a real check type of moment where you can make the GOP sacrifice a major piece just to keep playing the game.

Any denial of confirmation will have negative optics on the independents.

This is what I foresee
1) Obama appoints another justice
2) GOP Senate delay confirmation
3) Obama and the Dem's start making their refusal a major talking point of this election cycle
4) Talk shows becomes dominated by how the Republicans have been frustrating him with intransigence

THE independents hate this type of thing, shutdowns etc and it starts hurting them in the polls

Nominate someone immediately. Most American understand the important of the Supreme Court. It's one thing that everyone kind of gets. If they obstruct, it becomes a rallying point for the Dem nominee to point out the issues with no showing up to vote. It's an easy play for the Dems and a high turnout almost always locks the dem nominee into the presidency. GOP wins on low turnout.
 
This would be his third Supreme Court appointee if this goes through. That would be one president completely re-shaping the court. Talk about a consequential presidency.

Okay. Let's say a republican is nominated. There are 3 judges that are likely to kick the bucket before the end of the first term.
