David Ayer Says His "Soulful Drama" Cut of 'Suicide Squad' Was "Beaten Into a Comedy"

Director David Ayer remains vocal on Twitter in highlighting the differences between his Suicide Squad cut and the theatrical cut we saw back in 2016. Since it was revealed Zack Snyder's cut of Justice League would finally be released via HBO Max in 2021, Ayer — in similar circumstances to Snyder after his version of Suicide Squad was edited significantly ahead of release — has been answering a large number of fan questions daily about his director's cut and advocating for its release on HBO Max, too.
Among a slew of new tweets shared on Saturday morning, Ayer addressed the 2015 Comic-Con trailer (which you can revisit below) and how, tonally, it starkly contrasts with the theatrical cut. The topic came up after a follower of Ayer's on Twitter shared their opinion the Comic-Con trailer was the "greatest isolated piece" of content from the movie. This led Ayer to respond, seemingly agreeing and going on to explain how the trailer encapsulated the tone he wanted, but which never came to fruition.
"This trailer nailed the tone and intention of the film I made," Ayer tweeted, going on to say, "Methodical. Layered. Complex, beautiful and sad. After the [Batman v Superman] reviews shell shocked the leadership at the time, and the success of Deadpool, my soulful drama was beaten into a "comedy.'"
Here, Ayer's argument seems to be that the darker, moodier tone of Snyder's Batman v Superman, which was shared in part by Suicide Squad, was something that needed to be changed and the tone of the more gleefully R-rated Deadpool was the template upon which Ayer's cut was edited to match. Ayer stuck to these guns as he continued to reject Deadpool's example and its effect on comic book movies (referred to as "CBM" in the below tweets) overall, ultimately arguing DC movies work better as "darker, more psychologically realistic" entities.
yer's other comments on Saturday morning (and which seem to be ongoing at time of reporting) also go more in-depth on his vision for Jared Leto's Joker and Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, the mask worn by Will Smith's Deadshot, and challenging anyone who saw his cut in an effort to vouch for his version. The director's continued efforts to make the case for his Suicide Squad cut are intriguing, to say the least. It will be interesting to see what he reveals next.

You're not completely wrong, but you can't tell me Snyder got Superman right. This version seemingly cares about Martha and Lois and that's it. Nothing is done to represent a beacon to people. It seems that being Superman is more like a reluctant obligation to him than it is a responsibility. No purpose attached to it at all.
This Superman ain't it.
From tye man of steel to bvs.he saved so many lives. Remember the nightmare sequence wherd zod told him to choose between the people of earth and krypton that right there shows that his motivation was beyond Martha and Lois. If he seemed releucted it was because being a symbol of hope is a heavy burden to carry and not to mention that he wasnt well recieved by a lot of people and that goes back to his upbringing in small Ville between that and being framed for burning down an African village and murdering a terrorist group who wouldn't feel the way he would protecting a world of ingrates

I needed a few days and a rewatch to confirm it, but I think Lois and Martha are my favorite characters/actors with the most relatable story in here.
Let us not overlook the theme of grief and loss in this movie. Nor should anyone forget the real life grief that lead to the 2017 movie. Zack Snyder lost his daughter and honestly needed time to grieve. I'm not even a parent and I couldn't imagine what must feel like for a parent to bury a child. When they mentioned that Lois hadn't been to work in 2 years I initially thought that was crazy. But try to put yourself in her shoes. The world is 'mourning' Superman but they didn't really know him. Lois can't/couldn't mourn properly because Martha is the only person who could really understand her pain.
Now replace Lois with Zack Snyder. He has been trying to mourn his daughter with a world that only cared about seeing his version of the movie. The studio failed him by rushing a product out before the man had time to get pass an unimaginable loss. Warners was too concerned with securing that AT&T merger and wanted that JL vs Avengers in the same year money.
The general public also failed him with 4 years of crying about a Snyder cut in the mist of that tragedy. There were even change.org petitions to release the Synder cut, like not getting it asap was some infringement of freedoms or liberties. All the while the man was still trying to mourn. If we ALL could have been patience enough to let the man rest and grieve, we could have gotten this movie in Synder's original 2 movie format.
There is so much to unpack with this project. I don't even feel comfortable calling this a movie. This felt more like one man's vision of what this cinematic universe could have been. I kinda doubt that we're ever going to get any of those sequels and spinoff. If I was the actors I wouldn't even want to be apart of this universe anymore or ever work with Warners again.

You know they will say it doesn't exist oh my bad they said the same about the SynderCut. Ann Sarnoff had a team this past weekend shredding the evidence these Cacs know they messed up but will never fess up to it.
