Jon Jones stripped of light heavyweight title, suspended by UFC

UFC stripped light heavyweight champion Jon Jones of his title Tuesday, one day after he turned himself in to police custody on a felony charge in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Jones, 27, is the first champion in UFC history to be stripped of a title due to disciplinary reasons. UFC officials announced Tuesday that the promotion has indefinitely suspended Jones and pulled him from a scheduled title defense against Anthony Johnson at UFC 187 on May 23 in Las Vegas.

Former title contender Daniel Cormier will replace Jones in the pay-per-view event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

"He's very disappointed. He's upset. He wanted to go down as one of the greats or the greatest," UFC president Dana White said on "Fox Sports Live" of Jones. "He's disappointed, but it is what it is. It is the decision we had to make.

"For us to go in and have to strip him of his title and suspend him is not fun, but you know what they say: The show must go on."

Jones appeared in Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court on Tuesday for a felony first appearance. Judge Maria Dominguez granted a request made by Jones' attorney, Vincent Ward, to remove any travel restrictions on the fighter, which kept alive the possibility of Jones fighting next month in Las Vegas.

UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta, chief operating officer Lawrence Epstein and White flew to Albuquerque to meet with Jones and his representatives Tuesday afternoon. UFC announced Jones had been stripped of the title hours later.

"UFC feels strongly that its athletes must uphold certain standards both in and out of the Octagon," UFC said in a statement. "While there is disappointment in the recent changes, the organization remains supportive of Jones as he works through the legal process."

Widely considered the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Jones was allegedly involved in a three-car accident Sunday morning. Witnesses said a man fitting Jones' description ran a red light, collided with another vehicle and fled on foot. According to police reports, the man apparently returned to the vehicle to grab a "large handful of cash" before fleeing a second time.

The driver of the car that was struck, a 25-year-old pregnant woman, was taken to the hospital. Police confirmed she suffered a fractured arm and wrist.

Jones did not enter a plea during his court appearance Tuesday. The district attorney has 60 days to determine whether to move forward with the case, according to court spokeswoman Camille Cordova.

After the court hearing, Jones tweeted for the first time since the accident.

In May 2012, Jones was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after he crashed his Bentley into a telephone pole in Binghamton, New York. Jones pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor DWI charge and avoided jail time.

In early December, Jones tested positive for metabolites of cocaine while training for his bout against Cormier. Jones was allowed to compete because the test was conducted out of competition and beat Cormier via unanimous decision.

When the failed drug test became public after the fight, Jones publicly apologized for a "mistake." He admitted himself to a drug treatment center for one day and underwent outpatient therapy.

Jones had defended the 205-pound title eight times since becoming the youngest champion in UFC history in March 2011.

Re: Jon Jones stripped of light heavyweight title, suspended by UFC

:smh:

Possibly the greatest fighter of all time, only to be beaten by himself.

Re: Jon Jones stripped of light heavyweight title, suspended by UFC

cocaine is a helluva drug:smh::smh::smh::smh:

what a way to go out. Cut that check homie to the pregnant lady (that is going to be HUGE), do the time and work your way up. It will be a hard road back to the top, but he is young enough. He needs a better team around him

Re: Jon Jones stripped of light heavyweight title, suspended by UFC

cocaine was the only thing that could defeat him
:smh::smh::smh:

Re: Jon Jones stripped of light heavyweight title, suspended by UFC

Damn shame. Was looking forward to that fight too. They should make him do some jail time so he kicks this cocaine habit (county wise) Hypothetically speaking, if he go to the pen then he gonna have more cocaine in there than out on the streets. Haha. But honestly, i hope he get his ish together. He still young with plenty of fight left. I still consider him undefeated as many people do but his consecutive streak of title defenses is out the window which is probably the least of his concerns but I'm just speaking on history wise when they bring up those graphs showing GSP, Silva and then their always be that Jones name followed by "what could've happened" "Well add his previous title defenses with his current title defenses and...."

Re: ********Breaking Jon Bones Jones Stripped of title************

Oh well has nobody to blame but himself

Re: ********Breaking Jon Bones Jones Stripped of title************

jon jones :smh:

he need to get his life in order
before he gets in the octagon again
He got some demons that he need to resolve

I wish him well

Re: ********Breaking Jon Bones Jones Stripped of title************

Y'all that wasn't his first time. Dude been getting in trouble. Just that they made a big deal out of the Cocaine. He's been doing dumb shit. This is the kind of shit you get when you let a privileged fool go to rehab for one day and bounce. He is ruining his life and fucking up the chance to go down as the greatest ever. This is a sport that is rough on you and the window is small. Especially if you want to retire undefeated. I think Rumble was going to put his head in the third row..but we may never know now...and D.C. shouldn't get the first crack since he was so wack in the Jones fight.

Re: ********Breaking Jon Bones Jones Stripped of title************

The belt will be rubber until whomever's wearing it actually beats Jon Jones. If DC wins, Jones already beat him. If Rumble wins, he only beat the guy Jones already beat. This might fuck up Jones' title defenses streak, but all will be forgiven if he comes back, beats the new 'champ' and picks up where he fell off.

Re: ********Breaking Jon Bones Jones Stripped of title************

It's cold out there in those MMA streets.....

Jon Jones in a car accident? He should of gotten suspended the first time he failed the drug test for cocaine. This accident would have been prevented.
