Any Aussie that follows American sport will be familiar with ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith — but if you’ve never heard of him John Oliver is here for you. Oliver tackled the NBA’s conflict with China on a recent episode of his show Last Week Tonight. If you’re not up to speed on the issue, it’s explained here.

“While the NBA commissioner has stood by Morey it has been disappointing to see others like ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith heavily criticising his tweets for jeopardising the league’s bottom line,” Oliver begins.

“If you’ve never heard Stephen A. Smith talk before, just know this: He tends to be loud, wrong and takes pointlessly dramatic pauses.”

Oliver then played a clip of Smith weighing in on the China issue by criticising the man who started the conflict — Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey.

“You just don’t think about yourself when you act (pause) … that’s what boys and girls do (pause) … that’s what children do (pause). Grown ups? (pause) Adults? (pause) People who understand? (pause) … what it’s like to build something? (pause) To have something? (pause) And to be responsible for people other than themselves? (pause) They get (pause) … that you don’t just speak willy nilly (pause) … run your mouth (pause) … without any thought to the consequences.”

“Again, if you’re not a sports fan, and you’ve just now seen Stephen A. Smith for the first time, let me just address a few things quickly,” Oliver continued. “One: I’m sorry. Two: Yes, he’s always like that. And three: No one knows why.”

He then delivered a final shot. “What Smith is essentially doing there is arguing that casually turning a blind eye to human rights violations is OK if doing so is in your company’s best interest and that feels fundamentally wrong,” he said.

Stephen A. Smith's occasional valid opinions are often lost on people because he seems to think loudness equals veracity.
He would probably screech at the camera if he was tasked to give the weather report. No need for all that annoying as fuck hollering. :hmm:

The man, Daryl Morey, is entitled to say whatever he wants. And he has to suffer the consequences.
What this whole fiasco has high lighted is how quickly folks will bend over and spread 'em for a buck. There at least used to be some principles.

And BTW, sas is, as usual, wrong across the board. The only reason he is even on the air is because he fits the George Jefferson, angry black man with no real teeth caricature. He's wrong at least 80% of the time.

Damn I love that Dr. Welsing quote you posted. Props!!

In all seriousness, if black sports star aren't risking life, money, and career for their own people, why should they do that for someone else?

John Oliver hit the nail on the head. Stephen A Smith is nothing but a consistently wrong loud mouth with a platform.

I very much agree with that comparison.

When Jimmy Kimmel did the reboot of The Jeffersons a few months ago, I posted a SAS clip and dared anybody to dispute that he would not have been a better George Jefferson than Jamie Foxx was.

He's super entertaining and he is intelligent but also a clown who sometimes sounds like the Damon Wayans' Oswald Bates character in his over-reliance on overly verbose language with application that is incorrect often enough to be noticeable.

He obviously has never seen John Oliver's show.

Dude not only regularly shits on HBO but goes even harder at their parent company, AT&T.

I seriously doubt he'd give a fuck about LeBron.

The difference being LeBron doesn't regularly carry himself like Stephen A. and therefore doesn't warrant getting clowned like that.

There's a big difference between people clowning you and you actually being a clown.
