The Director of A&R for VP Records, Joel Chin, 35, was fatally shot in the head in front of his Stony Hill, St Andrew home, a few miles north of Jamaica's capital Kingston, at 10:45 PM last night (August 16) as he alighted from his car. Neighbors heard explosions and called the Stony Hill police. Chin was taken to Kingston Public Hospital where he was officially pronounced dead.

Story...

Be in peace my dude...

Def heard about this the day of. Chin was def well respected, met him just months ago when i was touring with Gyptian late last year in NY, and hope they find the culprits; RIP!

oh, ok.

A DAMN SHAME:smh:

The VP Records label was founded in 1979 by the late Vincent "Randy" Chin and his wife Patricia Chin, Chinese Jamaicans who owned the Randy's Records in Kingston, Jamaica (as seen in the 1978 film Rockers) as well as the Studio 17 recording studios.[1] In the mid-1970s, the Chins moved to New York City, setting up a record store in Brooklyn called VP Records in 1975, from which they sold and distributed records. In 1979 they relocated the store to Jamaica, Queens.[2] In 1993, the record label was formed after the success of the retail store.[1] The name of the label is a product of the first letters in the founders' names, hence the title "VP".

Trenchtown...paying homage to the originators whilst discovering talent anew and sharing knowledge...a light amidst darkness.

Hate is strong in this world...

Read about this yesterday. It's really fucked up. I hope they catch and shoot the fuckas responsible. RIP :(

Stony Hill is as upscale as upscale gets. Nothing less than 3 story houses over there.

I know that but still its toi close ti kingston, it aint nothing for the rude boys to go to stony hill. He should have been living in the middle or on the other side of jamaica 3 hrs drive away from kingston... Them rude boys wont fuck with rich or politically connected people

'Rudeboys' are everywhere the money is. That is why Joel was there as well.

I'm sure New York is full of big business and big crime as a comparison.

RIP Joel

its IN Kingston, not close to it
everywhere in Jamaica has crime and no one is above being a victim to it ESPECIALLY politically connected people rich or not.He obviously was in something he shouldn't had been

It's what they should do...at very least for the family's contribution.

It is?

My uncle lives there and it's more upper middle class.

But then I'm comparing it to Mandeville.

It depends on where in Stony Hill your uncle lives. But you're right. Upper middle to rich people over there. That's where some of Jamaica's elite live.

Remember, Jamaica is not like America. 3 hours drive in Jamaica is nothing like 3 hours up here. It's not sensible to commute that far to work.

And "rude boys"get paid by some politicians. Them niggas are deep in their pockets. That's why some of them don't get fucked with.

Rich people do get fucked with, though. In fact, the rich are starting to move away from those open neighborhoods and move into gated communities. Niggas love to stick-up wealthy people.

@beatdownrecords... it don't matter where you live in JA. If they send gunmen after you, they gonna get you. Whether it be at your house, job, or even in your car driving around. Some of those dudes have gotten so ruthless they hit witnesses in traffic in broad daylight.

Damn its like that out there? I knew shit was bad but not that fucked up :smh:

He should have been strap

This fool was 35, he ain't done shit it ain't like his parents got killed. Vp records only been around from 1993. They didn't make reggae what it is today. The chins ain't sly and Robbie. Tfoh

Sorry to tell ya'll but Stony Hill is NOT upper middle class.

My pops is buried in Stony Hill. We took him beck there from the US to be buried.

Headed northbound out of Kingston, from Halfway Tree, the towns run like this. Constant Spring, Stony Hill, Golden Spring, and then Chapleton.

Them open towns used to be upper middle class, but they are now lower middle class neighborhoods. I have a home there that I trying to get rid off.

Joel's vast contributions to the reggae industry will be celebrated at the upcoming Reggae Rhythm and Blues concert on September 4 at Roy Wilkins Park, Jamaica, Queens, featuring R&B crooner Kenny "BabyFace" Edmonds and Riley who is slated to participate in the tribute's live segment along with his bandleader, veteran saxophonist/producer Dean Fraser. Joel deeply admired Fraser's musical expertise and regarded him as his mentor. "With the Chin family's cooperation, we will also present a video tribute featuring interviews with artists, Joel's family, and his VP colleagues," explains Bobby Clarke, one of the concert's promoters. "Joel touched every aspect of the music and played a major part in reggae's promotion, especially in New York."
