Yes, I realize the Joe Johnson deal is old news, but hold on, don't quit on me yet—I do have something new to add. Did you know that in 2016 when Joe Johnson is 35 years old he will be the highest paid player in the NBA? It's true. The big three in Miami have taken pay cuts to play together, and Amar'e and Boozer have only signed five year deals. This leaves Joe Johnson as the NBA's highest paid player in the 2016-2017 season. Players like Carmelo Anthony, Tony Parker, and Chris Paul will have to accept deals under the new collective bargaining agreement meaning Johnson's contract will withstand the test of time. Joe Johnson is 25 years old and his numbers have not improved in four years. I am still trying to figure out why the Hawks signed him to that ridiculous contract, I mean think about it are we just going to go around and give everyone who averages 21, five, and five a maximum deal? Johnson really cashed in this offseason, but he really ruined his team. Johnson did exactly the opposite of what LeBron James did this offseason. Instead of trying to win a championship he's trying to lose. It's unlikely that the Hawks will be able to surround Johnson with high quality players now that they have committed to giving him every extra penny they have. With the new collective bargaining agreement coming into effect next year, some experts project the cap to shrink to as little as $51 million. This season the salary cap will be $58 million. The Hawks have sentenced themselves to six seasons of mediocrity with this deal. This year two players over the age of 35 played in the All-Star game. One of them is Jason Kidd, who has the second most assists in NBA history, and two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash. Both of whom make a living off creative passing. The Atlanta Hawks have now prevented themselves from winning an NBA championship in the next six years. They will get bad draft picks as they will make the playoffs, but they will not win an NBA championship and may not even reach a conference finals game. There is a very real possibility that by the time Johnson reaches his contract year, he could be taking up as much as 45 percent of the Hawk's cap space. For a 35 year old? Unless the Hawks know something that we don't, they will come to regret offering Johnson this contract.Read more NBA news on BleacherReport.com

Glad to see a brotha getting his bread. Fuck making the chicken hawks better. You all are not Champions.

those contracts are ridiculous...I'm happy he decided to go for the $$$$$ and stay in ATL...I think the Knicks would have signed dude....

also why does every Atlanta Hawks Home game...there are more fans cheering the road team?!

Yo, I walked in on the game and and heard the cheering when Rondo dropped a sick layup. I had to do a double take to realize they were in Atlanta. Shit sounds like a home game for the C's.

Joe don't care anymore. Didn't he say something bad about the fans during last years playoffs? Tonight there's more Green in the stands than Hawks fans. Celtics getting more cheers than the Hawks are in there own arena :smh: Its got to get be on the players minds when these opposing teams come into their gym and get more love then them...

I think a lot of the people that live in atlanta aren't originally from atlanta :dunno: that's my guess

dont blame joe, blame management

then these same idiots aka management complain to the commishs of various sports to save them from themselves

fuck if you make bad investments you should get bad returns

like the nfl, next year the nba is going to lockout their players because the owners/management are idiots

sports are fucked up today

You would be correct. A lot of people who live here have migrated from other cities and are still loyal to their home teams. They were chanting "MVP" for Amare Stoudamire during a recent fail against the Knicks.

Well said. I don't know what the hell they were thinking when they gave him all that damn money. And they didn't hesitate at all...I could be wrong but I believe he was the first of the "big" free agents to be signed this past off-season :smh: Dude is not a max deal player...You're right, he's #2 at best and could be a 3 on a lot of good teams  The deal they gave him is right along the lines of the Gilbert deal that Washington gave him. Difference is they were able to trade his ass, nobody is taking Joe off ATL's hands :smh:

exactly. the contract guaranteed that atlanta will be a mid level team for the next 5 years, at best. in other words, they can always be a 7 or 8 seed, thats about it under that contract. they cant sign ANYBODY worth anything with that contract eating up everything. to make matters WORST, they didnt extend jamal crawford BECAUSE of that contract. the fallout of the deal has already started because jamal gonna bounce on them after this season...........

Yup, I have no idea what they were thinking man... I guess they're satisfied just making the playoffs for the foreseeable future. Joe hasn't and isn't going to lead them anywhere in the next 5 years. Jamal is gone for sure, they still don't have a good pg, and Al is still playing out of position  They might not even be a playoff team in 2 years.

This.

Read up on the Hawks management situation. You think the team is bad? The owners situation is a hot mess. They have 2 major issues:

They all have to agree to do anything- trade a player sign a player whatever. All in or no deal.

They are suing each other to get one of the guys in the ownership team out. But they still need his vote to make any deal.

At the end of the day, they can't get much done except safe, middle of the road type moves. So they end up re-signing Joe Johnson cause they couldn't agree to do anything else.

on a side note, im gonna address WHY teams come into atlanta now and it seems like a home game for them, and a away game for the hawks: we all know atlanta is a transient city, we all know that, so, there has ALWAYS been a crowd cheering for whatever team came into the omni, now phillips arena. the difference, and its VERY noticeable this year is this, the core atlanta hawks fans have given up on this team because we see that hawks management isnt trying to put a winner out there. remember, just three years ago, you couldnt come into phillips arena and win and the crowd was rocking strictly with the hawks. that all changed when the fans saw the moves management was making. fool us once, fool us twice, but that was it. the johnson contract SEALED the deal with fans.
