Many moons ago the company I was employed by was taken to task by the NAACP in the form of a grievance filed against them for their lack of diversity (basically they were hiring very few black people in their legal department).
So, what they decided to do was promote a black man into the position of Director of Legal Hiring. I am not saying that he was not qualified for the position, but him being there provided cover for the company if the lack of diversity trend continued.
If it was not addressed, the company would just say, the Director of Legal Hiring is black.
