Let me take a stab at it. Ok we have two people reflecting on Jays rise: Jay himself and the doctor. Jay speaks from the perspective of proud amazement that he has been able to accomplish such great feats considering his back ground and the doc speaks from a confused bewildered dont get to ahead of yourself you negro perspective.
In the first reflection, we have jay speaking about what his life was and what his life has become. The obstacles were numerours and included drugs, injustice and racism. The odds of success occuring in these conditions are almost impossible to believe just as it is hard to beleive the odds of a woman having a child with no man involved.
Then the doc reflects. He doesnt like this progress jay has made. He wants to metaphorically put him on prozac. Something that will slow him down and keep him from doing what he naturally does. Not only does he want to slow him down, but he also want to discourage him from having lofty dreams and thinking he can do great things. The doc even goes as far as trying to brainwash jay into thinking black men are not and can not be kings.
