Japan: Nuclear Plant (Damage) with No Dome

As early as 1972, American regulators considered discontinuing GE's Mark 1 system, according to The New York Times. "Among the concerns cited was the smaller containment design, which was more susceptible to explosion and rupture from a buildup in hydrogen – a situation that may have unfolded at the Fukushima Daiichi plant," according to the article.

The ban idea was nixed because of the industry's preference for the design. Today in the US, 23 reactors at 16 locations still use the Mark 1 design, according to the antinuclear power Nuclear Information and Resource Service (pdf). The nonprofit has released documents dating back to 1972 on its website.

"The concern has been there all along that this containment building was not strong enough and the pressure containment system was not robust enough to prevent an explosion," Director Michael Mariotte said in a statement.

While the world's biggest nuclear-equipment supplier has maintained that its containment vessels are reliable, three GE employees quit in 1975 in protest over safety concerns around GE's so-called Mark 1 reactor containment vessel. Resigned employee Dale Bridenbaugh told ABC News that the rapid loss of cooling water in a reactor, as has happened now in Japan, "could tear the containment apart and create an uncontrolled release."

WASHINGTON — Japanese workers, who are risking their lives attempting to cool a half dozen crippled nuclear reactors, managed Saturday to stabilize a storage pool that holds some of the deadliest spent fuel, halting its release of radiation, the Japanese government said.

However, while progress was made in stabilizing reactor No. 3 at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, reactor No. 4 could pose a more difficult problem if, as feared, water is leaking through a breach in its pool filled with both live and spent fuel assemblies, U.S. experts said.

Without 30 to 40 feet of water, that pool still could heat up quickly, triggering a hydrogen explosion that could shower the entire plant with deadly radioactive particles. That would further hamper efforts to prevent the one-two punch of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami from causing a nuclear disaster on the scale of the Chernobyl plant in Ukraine in 1986.

The workers, many of whom have absorbed radiation levels widely considered unsafe, labored to restore electric power to four of the reactors' critical water pumps — equipment whose disabling has led to most of the significant radiation releases over the past week.

The improved effectiveness of spraying water on the reactors came as the Japanese government disclosed that radiation levels exceeding permissible levels have been detected in milk and spinach collected in the northeast region of the country near the plant.

EPA, says radiation from the Japan reactors has been detected in the United States and territories. The level is said to be harmless and can be traced back, to Japanese nuclear plants. Potassium Iodine tablets and liquid prices have peaked...

As of 9:00 a.m. (EDT) on March 20, EPA's RadNet radiation air monitors across the U.S. show typical fluctuations in background radiation levels. The levels detected are far below levels of concern. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has said we do not expect to see radiation at harmful levels reaching the U.S. from damaged Japanese nuclear power plants.

These levels are thousands of times below any conservative level of concern.

Neutron beam seen 13 times at Fukushima — Maybe evidence of nuclear fission or release of plutonium

The iodine-131 level in the Pacific Ocean waters just off the Fukushima plant was 1,250 times above the legal limit -- compared with readings of 126 times higher taken on Tuesday, and 145 higher on Thursday.

"This is a relatively high level," nuclear safety agency official Hidehiko Nishiyama said in a televised press conference on the test results from Friday released by plant operator the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO).

I doubt that, that would be more along the lines of technological or cyber warfare, which happened in Iran nuclear plants...

Stuxnet is a Windows-specific computer worm first discovered in June 2010 by VirusBlokAda, a security firm based in Belarus. It is the first discovered worm that spies on and reprograms industrial systems.[1] It was specifically written to attack Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems used to control and monitor industrial processes.[2] Stuxnet includes the capability to reprogram the programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and hide the changes.[3]
It is the first-ever computer worm to include a PLC rootkit.[4] It is also the first known worm to target critical industrial infrastructure.[5] Furthermore, the worm's probable target has been said to have been high value infrastructures in Iran using Siemens control systems.[6][7] According to news reports the infestation by this worm might have damaged Iran's nuclear facilities in Natanz[8][9] and eventually delayed the start up of Iran's Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant.[10] Siemens has stated, however, that the worm has not in fact caused any damage.[11]
Russian digital security company Kaspersky Labs released a statement that described Stuxnet as "a working and fearsome prototype of a cyber-weapon that will lead to the creation of a new arms race in the world." Kevin Hogan, Senior Director of Security Response at Symantec, noted that 60 percent of the infected computers worldwide were in Iran, suggesting its industrial plants were the target.[12] Kaspersky Labs concluded that the attacks could only have been conducted "with nation-state support", making Iran the first target of real cyber warfare.[13][14][15]
The origins of the worm are the subject of intense speculation.

Iodine reacts easily with other chemicals, and isotopes of iodine are found as compounds rather than as a pure elemental nuclide. Thus, iodine-129 and -131 found in nuclear facilities and waste treatment plants quickly form compounds with the mixture of chemicals present. However, iodine released to the environment from nuclear power plants is usually a gas.

Iodine-129 has a half-life of 15.7 million years; iodine-131 has a half-life of about 8 days. Both emit beta particles upon radioactive decay.

Current situation after accident in Fukushima (update: 3. April 2011 12:00)

Propagation of radioactivity weather conditions is and remains unfavorable

Weather in the crisis zone
Today still low pressure influence becomes apparent. Particularly on Hokkaido, approximately around Tokyo as well as in the Pacific occasional rainstorms come down. In the area Fukushima is rather small the probability of precipitation. The wind comes here from northwest, in the region Tokyo however from northeast to southeast.

On Monday high air pressure becomes, the elevator current apparent turns on north in all of Japan. Into Fukushima the wind comes from northwest to north, in Tokyo however from southeast. Thus radioactivity can be transported.

EPA STATEMENT: Update on Ongoing Monitoring
Release date: 04/02/2011

Contact Information: EPA Press Office, press@epa.gov

WASHINGTON – As a result of the incident with the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan, several EPA air monitors have detected very low levels of radioactive material in the United States consistent with estimates from the damaged nuclear reactors. These detections were expected and the levels detected are far below levels of public-health concern.

Elevated levels of radioactive material in rainwater have been expected as a result of the nuclear incident after the events in Japan since radiation is known to travel in the atmosphere - precipitation samples collected by EPA in the states of California, Idaho and Minnesota have seen very slightly elevated levels of radiation.

In addition to iodine-131, EPA monitors have also identified trace amounts of other isotopes, which we expected to see because they are consistent with releases from the damaged Japanese nuclear reactors.

To see results from these precipitation samples, please visit www.epa.gov/japan2011/docs/rert/radnet-precipitation-final.pdf.

JOINT EPA/FDA STATEMENT: Update on Ongoing Monitoring
Release date: 03/30/2011

Contact Information: EPA Press Office, press@epa.gov / FDA Press Office, fdaopa@fda.hhs.gov

WASHINGTON – In response to the ongoing situation in Japan, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has taken steps to increase the level of nationwide monitoring of milk, precipitation, drinking water, and other potential exposure routes.

EPA conducts radiological monitoring of milk under its RADNET program, while the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has jurisdiction over the safety, labeling and identity of milk and milk products in interstate commerce. States have jurisdiction over those facilities located within their territory.

Results from a screening sample taken March 25 from Spokane, Wash. detected 0.8 pCi/L of iodine-131, which is more than 5,000 times lower than the Derived Intervention Level set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. These types of findings are to be expected in the coming days and are far below levels of public health concern, including for infants and children. Iodine-131 has a very short half-life of approximately eight days, and the level detected in milk and milk products is therefore expected to drop relatively quickly.

“Radiation is all around us in our daily lives, and these findings are a minuscule amount compared to what people experience every day. For example, a person would be exposed to low levels of radiation on a round trip cross country flight, watching television, and even from construction materials,” said Patricia Hansen, an FDA senior scientist.

EPA’s recommendation to state and local governments is to continue to coordinate closely with EPA, FDA and CDC. EPA will continue to communicate our nationwide sampling results as they come in.

As earthquakes continue to jar Japan and the immediate area of the Fukushima plant, Tepco cedes to the reality of a hightened danger level. Level 7, has now been declared! There have been major radiation leaks into the ocean and ground. With the exception, of a few brave souls dedicating their lives to repair cracks in reactors, about 19 mile zone, is within unsafe levels.

Reactor 4 remains a huge threat due to a crack in the building and lack of an effective cooling system. This situation is no where near over. Information, can be researched directly on agencies websites.

Neutron beam observed 13 times at crippled Fukushima nuke plant
Thursday 24th March, 06:31 AM JST

Print
TOKYO —
Tokyo Electric Power Co said Wednesday it has observed a neutron beam, a kind of radioactive ray, 13 times on the premises of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant after it was crippled by the massive March 11 quake-tsunami disaster.

TEPCO, the operator of the nuclear plant, said the neutron beam measured about 1.5 kilometers southwest of the plant’s No. 1 and 2 reactors over three days from March 13 and is equivalent to 0.01 to 0.02 microsieverts per hour and that this is not a dangerous level.

The utility firm said it will measure uranium and plutonium, which could emit a neutron beam, as well.

In the 1999 criticality accident at a nuclear fuel processing plant run by JCO Co in Tokaimura, Ibaraki Prefecture, uranium broke apart continually in nuclear fission, causing a massive amount of neutron beams.

In the latest case at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, such a criticality accident has yet to happen.

But the measured neutron beam may be evidence that uranium and plutonium leaked from the plant’s nuclear reactors and spent nuclear fuels have discharged a small amount of neutron beams through nuclear fission.

Could this be neutron beams or something else....

Where does this end ?

As you know, Chernobyl(25 years later), area is still quarantined. Part of Northeastern Japan, could very well become a barren wasteland, beyond the 30km zone, by the looks of it, it may have already gotten to that point. It's hard to tell, especially when information is being altered and witheld...

Hkg4791371.jpg

A Level 7 accident, according to the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (INES), is typified by a “major release of radioactive material with widespread health and environmental effects.” That measuring scale was established by the IAEA some 21 years ago, but its guidelines leave plenty of room for interpretations, nuclear experts say.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/world...addafis-forces/2011/04/12/AFxrFEND_story.html

There is now evidence, in theory, that the Northeastern part of the island is shifting more and more to the East, while the lower part, is shifting,(8ft from the March 11 earthquake), to the West. There is a HUGE drop off 100miles from the coast(Google Maps), so Japan, the island, is in a dire situation, in it of itself...Then calculate in the already daily occurring earthquakes, the volcano, the radiation, the damage already done...
