Notice the whole time the poor "coolies" were sent over, they ended up learning English and speaking patois to get along in Jamaica and work. The africans who got Jamaica in the first place learned English to get on.

I understand your anticipative optimism, but surrendering land and economic sovereignty for the sake of building a nation's infrastructure is NOT fair deal in my opinion. Ownership and control matters. Imagine living in a house that has many modern conveniences but you do not own it, cannot sublet or rent out, cannot pass to your children, and also guests are allowed to visit whenever they want and use your toilet without flushing at their whim. That's what these deals feel like to me.

Germany, Sweden, Norway, Netherlands, Finland, etc.. all of em teach English in school and you can barely find a person who doesn't speak it whos younger than 60.
I actually lived in several European countries as a military brat and have been done a few tours as an adult You go to an American company in Germany they speak German in that bitch. The locals dont have to learn English to get jobs as this is saying about the Jamaicans with the Chinks.
And as far as barely finding people under 60 who dont speak English in Europe...complete bullshit.

But anyway, let me reiterate. English is taught as a second language in all of those countries. It's a requirement. Why? Because English is the language of MONEY.
Also, If a Danish guy is doing business with a Swedish guy, or a Dutch guy, or a French guy- guess which language they speak. ENGLISH.
Of course they speak their own language. It they also speak English because it benefits them to do so.
Since you're a military brat though, I'm sure you ventured out into the nearby city more than once. How hard was it to find an English speaker for directions? I'm sure it was easy. Why do I know this? Because I was raised a military brat too, and I travel to Europe for work often NOW. They HAVE to speak English to me in every one of those countries in order to do business with me. I don't speak any of their languages and I skip through every city without a care.
Also, the Irish speak English and that isn't their first language. Gaelic(irish) is taught to them in school but most of the young people don't k ow it.
Even the english language is several languages all slammed into one based on that island being colonized. The reason there are tons of French words in it is because they were once colonized by the french (Norman's) and so many other influences , all brought by colonization. Languages are forced on people all the time.
