New York Knicks shooting guard J.R. Smith will become an unrestricted free agent July 1, Jared Zweling of ESPNNewYork.com reported on Tuesday afternoon. The 2012-13 Sixth Man of the Year will announce before June 30 that he will opt out of his $2.9 million player option for next year.

Smith, who qualifies for the Early Bird exception because he played with the same team for the past two years, was on the books for $2.8 million this past season and can re-sign with the Knicks for $4.9 million in 2013-14. According to the terms of the Early Bird rights, a team can re-sign a player that enters free agency for 175 percent of his annual salary the previous season or for the average NBA salary, whichever is greater.

This past regular season was Smith’s best; the 27-year-old averaged 18.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game, both career highs. But despite his initial contributions, Smith’s performances declined dramatically in the playoffs. After shooting 42 percent from the field this year, Smith struggled throughout the postseason, shooting 33 percent over 11 games, including three sub-30 percent outings during the Knicks’ second round loss to the Indiana Pacers.

As Zwerling reported, Smith’s close relationship with Knicks All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony will certainly play a role in New York’s decision of whether to retain Smith for $4.9 million next season. But Anthony has also been expressing his desire in recent weeks for another scorer on the team, and Smith’s inconsistency might compel the organization to let him walk in favor of a more reliable second-option.

JR Smith's destiny is to be overpaid by one of the bottom 5 franchises, where he can take as many God-awful shots as his heart desires.

Naw if anything The Knicks will trade Amare ass, he been hurt and not doing to much. I dont really know his worth, but i'm sure a team will want alot to take it on.

I wish we could trade Amare. His contract is too big no team will take that shit. We are stuck with him for at least another y ear.

As far as J.R. I'd rather he leave insteae of us overpaying and being stuck with his contract.

This is the same team, that got rid of Jeremy Lin. Who possibly could they get.

This is a hard choice...

If we don't sign him... we're definitely gonna to take step backwards next year...

BUT... That may not be a bad thing...

Next summer... Amare's expiring contract will look nice to some teams looking to free up some cap space in the future... and that can potentially help us add on to 'Melo and Tyson...

For me... I don't mind either way... In fact... I say... FUCK IT... and re-sign him...

Even though he had one of the SHITTIEST playoffs I've ever seen.... The guy did help us... A LOT... Especially with Amar'e being broke up all season... Without him... We would have been DOUBLE SCREWED...

Wow! good call. All that considered I still think the Knicks should sign him, give him a 2 year deal. On the open market Smith can get 7 million per year right now... I can think of a few teams that could use his services. Shiiiiit, I wouldn't leave that money on the table... not at 27, I'd try and land a 2-3 year deal worth 15-25 million.

 His whole career I been waiting for him to go to a team that just doesn't give a fuck about winning and have him shoot 20 shots a game. I Guess he on his way.

To a team like chicago he could be a missing piece kinda how they used Nate Robinson but starting next to Rose. Knicks might be better off keeping him than letting him get scooped by a rival.

In terms of basketball IQ....Nate's is far superior to JR.

JR takes the short bus:lol:

No crazier than Vernon Maxwell and Houston got a ring with him lol just need the right coach and situation

crazy as vernon maxwell was, we loved him because he was one of the few people that gave jordan fits. he used to give jordan the blues every time they played. those dudes hated it each other. that shit was awesome.

houston, okc, chi..i said those are the teams i could see him with

Thats not how the cap works and hourstob is getting dwight. Knicks will resign him because as soon as they trade Amare and get a real second scorer he will be an asset as a 3rd or 4th option.

Hawks might grab him but if they let josh smith walk and only come away with JR they fucked up lol

JR had a terrible play offs but if I were the Knicks I would re sign him. He should be back better next season and the Knicks should consider Nate

JR needs to be in a smaller market city! Anything close to a big market city, and he's a TMZ headline waiting to happen! Dude is what 27-28? He is what he is for the most part... great offensive player who if he got his head together could help A LOT of teams, and extend his career...

Unfortunately, he is on pace to flame out before his time I believe... :smh:
