I wasn't planning on coming back before my return date, but this saga is getting so preposterous I just have to chime in...
Muthafuckas in my gym almost came to blows over this Lebron shit. I kid you not. Then again they are Faker fans so I'm assuming they are shook.
How so?
I know you're from Cleveland gene, but I'm going to have to say that Cleveland has to be the the 2nd most pitiful city in the nation next to Detroit.
Dan Gilbert is a bitch. Plain and simple. Every owner of a sports franchise at some point who's had a superstar has to deal with the departure or retirement of their players and of course the resulting hit in the value of their franchise. Lebron played his ass off for the ungrateful citizens of for 7 years. He honored his contract and decided to move on. He owes them NOTHING. How many 10s of Millions of dollars in revenue did Lebron generate for Cleveland annually?
Now do I fault Lebron for stooping down to Bret Favre's level and acting like an attention whore with this 1 hour special? Of course. But other than that, he's kept his nose clean.
Folks across the nation living in civilized cities are looking at Dan and the rest of Cleveland sideways asking ourselves "WTF are they so angry about?".
And let's keep it real. You and I are about the same age. Young kats here have now clue about the NBA 20 years ago. You and I have watched the game degenerate year after year. Y'all wanna use the argument that "Lebron took the easy way out" and that he needs other superstars to win, well news flash; THIS ISN'T YOUR FATHER'S NBA. That argument might have been valid back then, but not in TODAY'S NBA.
In TODAY'S NBA we still have our superstars, but after that, the mid level talent drops off a cliff. GONE are the days where you can rely on your role players to give you a double double night in and night out. These days asking your forwards and centers who get paid at least 5 mil a year to give you JUST 10 points and 10 rebounds a game IS ASKING TO MUCH. TODAY asking your guards to shoot 90%+ from the free throw line IS ASKING TOO MUCH.
Back in the day when I used to watch the Sonics and Warriors, it wasn't Shawn Kemp or Gary Peyton that were killing us, it was fucking Detlef Schrempf coming off the bench dropping his nightly 12 to 16 points. No matter who the Sonics played, YOU COULD COUNT ON DETLEF to give you 12 to 16 points a game, GUARANTEED. Back then RELIABLE role players were the norm, now they are the novelty. In my book there is no reason why a Lamar Odom or Ron Artest should be playing as inconsistent as they do. What would you have Lebron do, rot away in Cleveland playing 1 on 5 for the rest of career being loyal to empty promises and pathetic losers?
2 players that come to mind that made the grave mistake of being "loyal" are Dominique Wilkins and Barry Sanders.
Did you know Barry Sanders was literally a hair away from becoming a 49er after Ricky Watters bounced? Eddie D., like he did so many of his star players offered Barry the world. Do you honestly believe there would have been any debate on who would be the greatest running back of all time had he finished his career with the 49ers playing along side Steve Young, Jerry Rice, John Taylor, and an O-Line that was light years better than what he ran behind in Detroit? Of course hindsight is 20/20, we all know Barry realized his MASSIVE MISTAKE in loyalty and retired early.
Now we are all in agreement that Stern likes to "help" certain teams *cough*Gasol/Lakers trade*cough* and best believe he tried to "nudge" Cleveland along, Lebron vs. Kobe in the finals would have probably broken some rating records. For reasons currently unknown to us, Gilbert has FAILED to get Lebron the supporting cast comparable to what West has supplied Kobe with. Has it been explained why Boozer inexplicably bounced? Why wasn't Delonte West 86ed the day after the end of the Boston series? Why aren't you holding Dan Gilbert accountable?
We weren't burning Joe Montana's jersey when he wanted to be traded out of SF. He won us 4 Superbowls AND WE RESPECTED THAT. We weren't heckling Jerry Rice when he decided he didn't want to retire and showed up across the bay with the Raiders. And we hate the Raiders. Jerry took the game to the next level and is arguably the greatest player in NFL history, AND WE RESPECTED THAT. Barry Bonds was born and raised in the South Bay. He, like Lebron, is/was a home town darling. Prior to all this steroids bullshit when Dusty Baker lost the Giants the world series it became apparent that Barry wasn't going to get a ring with the Giants. So what did a lot of San Franciscans, Bay Areans want to see, and Giants ownership entertain? Trading Barry to the Yankees just so we could see him get a ring. Barry played his ass off for SF and took the game to the next level, AND WE RESPECTED THAT.
As a fan of sports, all you should really want is for the players on your team to give it 100%, and that's it. Fuck what they do in the off season (unless they are on some Rothelsberger bullshit), fuck what they do in their past time. As long as they are performing on the court/field, that is all you should be asking of players, and that's what Lebron did. I don't remember him catching a rape charge. I don't remember his getting busted for weed and coke. I don't remember him being at the scene of a murder. I don't remember him catching a manslaughter charge for killing a pedestrian while driving. I don't remember him doing dumb shit like dog fighting and serving a year in jail. All he's doing is taking the game to the next level and the city of Cleveland DOES NOT RESPECT THAT. Therefore Cleveland got what they deserved and they really should be ashamed of themselves for conducting themselves like little 2 year old menstruating bitches. I no longer believe it's a coincidence that Cleveland has had so much sports drama in its history.
All this hate is totally uncalled for.
