My womans girlfriend gave birth to a little girl 3 months back. My girl has been with her, consoling her, making sure she's eating and the rest.

Post natal depression, to me, seems like a behavioral problem, but I've been told it is a lot more complicated. I may be a little dense but what is it and what could I do to support my woman, as I can see the residual effects are definately taking a toll on her.

Some of that is hormonal (huge shift hormonally for a woman post natal) Scar and will balance out over time. Best thing is to make sure your girl is well nourished with QUALITY food and a doctor recommended multivitamin (especially if she is breastfeeding) and well rested. In chinese medicine the view would be that some of those issues are related to "blood vacuity" or blood depletion and that makes a lot of sense even in a Western context. The key being depletion- birth is rough! With good nutritional and emotional support, your girl should be fine. Fatigue, a little anxiety and weepiness is normal :) but if your girl starts to express fear of harming herself or the baby then it is time to seek professional help. Also showing signs of severe depression and apathy.

Breastfeeding will encourage the release of oxytocin a feel good hormone that will elevate mood and enhance bonding with the baby.

Best to you.
