An American man, believed to be fighting alongside Islamist militants in Syria, has been killed, the White House has confirmed.

A cousin of Douglas McAuthur McCain told the BBC the US government had called his mother to confirm his death.

McCain was found dead by Free Syrian Army fighters after a battle at the weekend, according to NBC.

The US government believes a small number of Americans have travelled to Syria to fight for extremist groups.

Senior US officials told broadcaster CNN McCain was fighting for Islamic State (IS), which now controls large areas of Iraq and Syria.

"My family is accepting the confirmation that was given to us by the government," his cousin Jocelyn Smith told the BBC. "I am really shocked."

Ms Smith said the family had not been surprised when McCain converted to Islam a decade ago, but had no idea he had travelled to Syria or was potentially fighting for militants there.

"He was a beautiful person and whatever thoughts that were going on that made him make this decision were not out of hate," she said.

"I thought he was in Turkey and why he was in Turkey was unclear to us."

McCain was born in the US state of Minnesota and had moved to California with family, she added.

Hundreds of foreign fighters have gone to Syria in recent years. Two of them, Nicole Lynn Mansfield and Moner Mohammad Abu-Salha, 22 have died in the conflict.

Mansfield, 33, was a Muslim convert. She died in May 2013, apparently while trying to attack Syrian government forces.

Salha, who is originally from West Palm Beach, Florida, died in an explosion on 25 May during an attack on the Syrian army.

He had joined a rebel group, Nusra Front, and became the first American suicide bomber in the Syria conflict.

Western officials have warned of foreign fighters returning to the US and Europe after receiving training in Syria.

"We were aware of US citizen Douglas McAuthur McCain's presence in Syria and can confirm his death," National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said in a statement.

"We continue to use every tool we possess to disrupt and dissuade individuals from traveling abroad for violent jihad and to track and engage those who return."

Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm John Kirby told the BBC's Katty Kay the death "brings home one of the real threats here about [IS] and why we think about them in an imminent way".

The US ordered air strikes against IS in Iraq and Mr Obama has called the militant group a "cancer".

After the killing of journalist James Foley by the group, they are demanding more than $6m (£3.6m) for the ransom of a female foreign aid worker, US media report.

The 26-year old woman was working for a number of humanitarian organisations in Syria when she was kidnapped last year.

The US government and the woman's family have requested she not be named because of fears for her safety.

The woman is one of at least three known hostages currently held by IS militants.

Another is the US journalist, Steven Sotloff, who was seen alive at the end of the footage that showed James Foley's execution.

The militants have also demanded the release of the Pakistani neuroscientist, Dr Aafia Siddiqui, who is being held in a Texan jail after she was convicted in 2010 of planning to attack US officials.

FBI Director: 'I Have Home-Grown Violent
Extremist Investigations
in Every Single State'

"Counterterrorism remains the bureau's top priority, FBI Director James Comey told a gathering in Washington on Wednesday -- the same day federal authorities in New York charged three immigrants, all Muslim, with conspiracy to provide material support to the Islamic State.

"I have home-grown violent extremist investigations in every single state," Comey told a meeting of state attorneys general. "Until a few weeks ago, there was (sic) 49 states. Alaska had none, which I couldn't quite figure out, but Alaska has now joined the group. So we have investigations of people in various stages of radicalizing in all 50 states."

Comey said the terror threat has "metastasized" in recent years, as the "progeny of Al Qaida take root" in safe havens such as Syria, Iraq, and Libya, using the Internet and social media to spread their propaganda and recruitment "at the speed of light."

"So why do I tell you this?" Comey asked. "To explain to you why this remains at the top of the FBI's list, and to explain to you why the conversations I have with our state and local partners in all 50 states matters so much today.

"Because ISIL in particular is putting out a siren song through their slick propaganda, through social media, that goes like this: 'Troubled soul, come to the Caliphate; you will live a life of glory; these are the apocalyptic end times; you will find a life of meaning here fighting for our so-called Caliphate. And if you can't come, kill somebody where you are.'"

Comey said terror attacks no longer have to be large-scale to advance the terrorists' mission. While Osama bin Laden's followers flew planes into buildings, today's terror groups advocate the killing of small groups and individuals: And if (they) can capture it on video and if it's somebody in uniform, all the better, because it will advance (their) mission."

Comey also said it's "highly unlikely" that a federal agent will be the first to hear about suspicious behavior: "It's going to be a deputy sheriff," he said. "It's going to be a police officer who knows that neighborhood."

Re: New Indictment Comes in Calif. Terror Case

URGENT - Law enforcement warning
sent out about American youth and ISIS

(CNN) -- The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security sent a joint warning to law enforcement across the country about the concern of a growing trend of girls and boys wanting to fight with ISIS in the wake of the detention of a 17-year-old Northern Virginia teen last week, according to a law enforcement official who has read the report. The source says law enforcement is tracking "lots of cases" like that around the country and they're growing increasingly concerned about the issue. The warning was sent out over the weekend. The warning lays out motivations for boys and girls. For boys: they tend to be older going over to fight and be a part of foreign fighters, or they want to attack in the U.S. (like the Brooklyn case). For girls: they tend to be younger and have a fanciful notion of what life is like in Syria. They often want to go over and be Islamic brides.

A young Mississippi woman plans to plead guilty to a terrorism charge Tuesday, months after authorities say
she and her fiance tried to go to Syria to join the Islamic State group.

Court papers show 20-year-old Jaelyn Young, originally from Vicksburg, will plead guilty in Aberdeen federal
court to conspiring to provide material support to a terrorist organization.

Young faces up to 20 years in prison, $250,000 in fines and lifetime probation.

Lawyers for Young did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment Monday.

Her fiance, Muhammad Dakhlalla, pleaded guilty March 11 to a similar charge and awaits sentencing. The pair
at one point planned to claim they were going on their honeymoon while traveling to Syria.

The couple was arrested Aug. 8 before boarding a flight from Columbus, Mississippi, with tickets for Istanbul.
Authorities say they contacted undercover federal agents last year, seeking online help in traveling to Syria.
Both are jailed in Oxford.

Young, a sophomore chemistry major at Mississippi State University at the time of her arrest, is the daughter
of a school administrator and a police officer who served in the Navy reserve. She was a former honor student,
cheerleader and homecoming maid at Vicksburg's Warren Central High School.

Dakhlalla grew up as the youngest of three sons of a prominent figure in Starkville's Muslim community. He is a
2011 psychology graduate of Mississippi State who and was preparing to start graduate school at the university.

Prosecutors have portrayed Young as the leader of the plot. They said that by the time Young began dating Dakhlalla
in November 2014, she was already interested in converting to Islam. She announced her conversion in March and began
wearing a burqa, a garment worn by some Muslim women to cover their face and body.

"After her conversion, Young distanced herself from family and friends and felt spending time with non-Muslims would be
a bad influence," prosecutors wrote in a statement of facts regarding Dakhlalla's plea.

The statement said Young increasingly complained about the treatment of Muslims in the United States and United Kingdom.
Prosecutors said that, after watching pro-Islamic State group videos, she began to view the fighters as liberators. They said
Young approvingly cited a video of a man accused of being gay being thrown off a roof to his death by militants and also
expressed approval of the shooting of five members of the military in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

"Young continually asked Dakhlalla when they were going to join (the Islamic State group) and began to express hatred for
the U.S. government and to express support for the implementation of Sharia law in the United States," prosecutors wrote.

The court papers reiterated earlier government claims that Young and then Dakhlalla contacted undercover FBI employees
online stating they wanted help to travel to Islamic State group territory.

The papers confirm that both Young and Dakhlalla left farewell letters "that explained they would never be back, with Young a
cknowledging her role as the planner of the expedition and that Dakhlalla was going as her companion of his own free will."

NY, NJ bombings: Suspect wounded,
arrested after shootout; 2 officers hit

upload_2016-9-19_12-6-19.png

New York (CNN)[Breaking news update at 12:30 p.m.]

-- The FBI described Rahami as a naturalized U.S. citizen of Afghan descent with a last known address in Elizabeth, New Jersey -- the same city where an explosives-laden backback was found Sunday night.

-- Ahmad Khan Rahami, the man suspected in bombings in New York and New Jersey, is now in custody after a shootout with police, sources said.

-- The shootout happened Monday in Linden, New Jersey. Rahami was shot and was taken to an ambulance in a stretcher with his right shoulder bloodied and bandaged.

-- Two officers were hit in the shootout with Rahami, the mayor of the nearby city of Elizabeth said. One officer's vest was struck, and the other was shot in the hand.

-- Investigators first identified Rahami Sunday afternoon, a senior law enforcement official told CNN Monday. They were able to identify him through a fingerprint, the official said. The cell phone on the pressure cooker device found at the 27th street location in Manhattan also provided some clues, the official added.
Ahmad Khan Rahami, the man wanted in connection with bombings in New York and Seaside Park, New Jersey, is also believed to be connected to pipe bombs found Sunday night in Elizabeth, New Jersey, sources said.

Ahmad Khan Rahami was wounded in a shootout with police in Linden, New Jersey.

The bombings led authorities to believe there may be a terror cell at work in those two states, law enforcement officials told CNN Monday.

-- Authorities believe Ahmad Khan Rahami is the man seen in surveillance videos rolling a duffel bag near the scene of the bombing in Chelsea, according to multiple officials.
