It's official.... I defended my thesis

posted this in the main board already, but I thought I would put it here, too..

I defended my thesis on Wednesday, and I have finally recieved my Ph.D. (after a little more paperwork, that is...)

now I have to enter the real world where you can't go to work whenever you feel like it, and you can't look at porn boards all day long... I'm starting to wonder why I decided to finish

then again, I will be getting paid well over 3 times my current salary as a research assistant.... guess I need to get my partying in as soon as I can

and now, finally, I'll start posting more on this board... writing my thesis took too much brain energy, and all I have had energy to do was talk shit and clown cats... I needed to take my anger out on someone, and ock made himself quite available, LOL...

Nice. what did you get your PHD in? Did you start school Late in life?

You'll need all the strength in the world to deal with people who would become your subordinate and the fact that you are their boss (and so qualified) will screw with their phyche.

As you step out into the world of work remember that paper trails and documenting conversations should become your friends.

Congrats. lots of options. What is the title of your thesis (I know someone posted you worked with polymers but could you be a bit more specific.

due to the recent ockings (that I very much promoted) I don't think it's in my best interest to actually post my thesis title. Too easy to figure out who I am... but it was in chemical engineering and the subject was on the phase behavior of polymers.

Slowhands - I started grad school right after undergrad at FAMU, I think I was 23 then, and it took almost 7 years to finish (I just turned 30 last Saturday) so I didn't really start out late, but it took longer than most, mainly because I was on this board too much instead of sitting in the lab... looking at ass and reading up on politics instead of polymers... I think I did the right thing, though, and I don't feel bad about taking a long time to finish. I took my sweet time and didn't try to burn myself out. Compared to others in my group, I did a lot of work, could have finished earlier, but the timing never really worked out right, and I got my best work done in the past year as I was scrambling to tie up loose research ends.

my immediate plans are to spend the next week finishing up paperwork and putting together a final draft of my thesis (minor changes and typos) and then I will start working a real 8-5 job doing work in adhesives at a small company here in MN. I won't actually be the boss of anyone at first, but I will direct the research and work side by side with a lot of people with no degree but a ton of experience. A big part of my job will be figure out the science behind the stuff they do. Basically, they know what works, and I am going to figure out why it works in order to improve the processes and find new materials that will work better.

thanks for all of the congrats.. I was busy partying and drinking all night, and now I am quite hungover and there is a huge mess in my house that I somehow have to get someone to clean up...
