It Is True That Luther Vandross Was Gay?

Prince did mess with Carmen Electra. she admits that. he made her wear make up 24/7, put her in an apartment and her on call to fuck whenever he wanted.

Not true at all. She was a back-up dancer whom he re-named and turned into a performer (based on her look, not her talent). Their association was professional, as she's stated repeatedly. Plenty of other women fall into the same category They barely knew him, even though their names were closely associated with him business-wise (like those two Diamonds and Pearls-era dancers, the actress Apollonia and others).

Vanity, yes. Carmen Electra, no. Prince was not involved with every woman that was in his musical orbit, though this self-created, 5'2"-super-stud "mythology" has always worked wonders for him, and still obviously does (thanks in part to the fantasy-fulfillment scenario of the Purple Rain film.)

Luckily for him he managed to seclude himself early on after his fame struck. Folks didn't even know about his sick child for days. His love life remains something of an enigma wrapped around a mystery (or vice-versa). Whether gay or straight (or some mix of both) he's decidedly eccentric (and controlling) with regards to his relationships. He can afford to be. (Veronica Webb's account in her book about the circumstances of her getting an interview with him is instructive on this. Lisa Jones's biography from the early '90s is pretty illuminating also, if limited by its lack of access to the principal.)

Your coming was foretold...

LET'Z LET BROTHER LUTHER REST IN PEACE!

If folks really cared about his "peace" then they would've allowed (and encouraged) him to just be himself. The same goes for all the other performing superstars (black and otherwise, male and female) who have had to experience this same "closeted" nonsense (while the hetero wackos are allowed to run amock and are praised/admired for it).

I'm only 24 so I really did not experience Luther like some others on this board mainly because I grew listening to a lot of rap rather than r&b. I'm a late bloomer.

And to the dude who called me a "fucking white boy," keep mouthin' off on the net because in real life I'd smack ya twice before you knew it. Punk bitch!

He was also on tour with En Vogue. En Vogue claims he was a real "diva" who gave them a real hard time.

Personal life:

During Vandross's entire career, he was dogged by questions regarding his sexuality. A lifelong bachelor, his name was never romantically linked in the media with women. Although Vandross never explicitly denied being gay, he never publicly acknowledged it either. He generally attempted to steer questioners away from the issue altogether by saying that his busy lifestyle made marriage difficult and indicated that it wasn't what he wanted. After his death, an article in Out magazine had several of Vandross' friends, including gay comedy writer Bruce Vilanch, claiming that Luther was indeed a very unhappily closeted gay man.

Even if he was gay doesnt really matter because now he's dead and everything you hear now would be speculation. He never said he was gay so I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt. Why is everyone so fixated on such a small part of his life, when he was such an amazing artist for years. Motherfuckers love gossip and hearsay, he said, she said nonsense.

once a man makes a song titled dance with my father again that pretty much erases all doubt, but what does it matter luther helped make plenty of babies

Not sure you're doing him any favors by "giving him the benefit of the doubt" as if we're talking about some sort of wrongdoing. The real tragedy is that he didn't think he ever could "say he was gay."

Why is everyone so fixated on such a small part of his life, ...

"Small part?" Judging by your presence here it's unlikely that your "heterosexuality" is just a "small part" of your life. I'll bet your feelings about women dominate every aspect of it (from daily masturbation to intimate or friendly relationships). Now imagine if you could never freely express yourself in that way with a partner, or were rebuked if you even talked about your relationships (or your hopes/fantasies about potential ones).

Nah Carmen did state they we're involved at 1 time & he did make her dress up everyday as if she was shooting a video & she would sit like that all day & all nite sometimes thinking Prince was coming over & sometimes he didn't even show. Kim Basinger was another 1 he was with but she said he was 2 posessive. Listen 2 the song Scandalous, that's Kim in the background with the moans.

He had a brief relationship with Basinger during Batman, but not with Carmen (according to her). Their implied "relationship" and the sexy stories about it were all part of the hype machine which promoted her, same as with all of his female proteges (even the failed ones).

Luther Vandross was on the Opray Winfrey Show many years ago. He said that his favorite painting is called "Two Men In A Shower" and that the painting hangs right above his bed.

LOL. He never said any such thing on her show. Urban legend. Get real.

What!!! This is not an urban legend. I saw this on Oprah myself. I can't tell you exactly how long ago it was, but he definitely said it. I wasn't surprised because everytime the Grammy Awards were on television Luther was always sitting with a skinny man, never a woman.

Not to take away from his talent, but he was a queen through and through.

This isnt exactly true, she did in fact have a sexual relation with prince. She actually was on howard sterns show some time ago(she also mentioned this on another mtv type program, though i forget the show)and mentioned that prince "wasnt good in the sack", and she laughed about it. she basically said somehting to the effect that he was a bore.

No, I've seen her on Stern (more than once) and she's always denied having a sexual relationship with Prince (though she did acknowledge the promotional value of that assumption). She would never badmouth him publicly, 'cept to humor the jealous Stern.

She was also on a few times way-back-when with her boyfriend from those days, B-Real.

Come on man, get real! You gonna say what is leaked to the media is something that can NOT be controlled?

I work with this guy whos wife is a nurse at the hospital homeboy was at. There was a gag order in effect on all staff under penalty of losing their jobs, if anything was said to media or anyone else on this dude's real illness. Know this, what you get in the media is what you are allowed to know...

His constant battles with obesity (and its many related illnesses) were well-documented, as was his family's history of poor health. His stroke was inevitable.

(If he only had AIDS he'd probably still be alive.)

no doubt, if i remember correctly, it was a program that she was on by herself, after the whole rodman thing. Artie wasnt on the show at that time. She didnt exactly bad mouth him, but howard didi ask her, i remember hearing the sound effect he played of someone snoring, and carmen bust out laughing. In any case, Mr vandross will be missed.

Why are people so interested in other peoples sexual preferences and sex lifes? Don't think I'll ever understand that. If it was really that important & he or anyone else wanted everyone to know he would of announced it himself.

R.i.P

You're right. I think the show was "Driven" or one of those celebrity biography shows on VH1. But she definitely had a relationship with Prince and said he was boring.

I met Luther a few times because he was a client for a company I used to work for. When I met the dude, it was on some humble shit. No makeup, no cameras, just some ordinary business transaction. So he was pretty comfortable and laid back. I think, it would be pretty safe to say he was a homo. It would also be safe to say, his personal driver/assistant was homo as well. His everyday voice was a little surprising also. I never heard a man of his physical size sound so sugary sweet. :smh: Luther was a fassy. RIP, made great music. But still a fassy. :smh:

So what? THe majority of people in this thread are defending Prince sexuality knowing he OPENLY did more feminine shit than any artist i can possibly think of!:hmm:

And for the dude who started this thread, please speak on ya own behalf because I'm 24 and grew up to Luther's music as well as other R&B, Rap/Hip Hop, and other genre's of music! For you to hardly know much about Luther's music yet take a curiousity towards his sexuality speaks volumes about you.

As long as the artist focus on making good music, nobody should really give a fuck what they all do behind closed doors, which im sure is worst than what Luther was doing!

Who cares? BUT he was obviously gay. . . . One of his last songs was, "Dance with my Father." Come on man
