Is OCD a white thing?

I plead absolute ignorance on this one so don't bury me for not knowing completely.

I was watching MTV True Life and it followed 3 people that are stricken with OCD. Immediately after the intro of the show, the common strings hit me:

Privileged, white suburban products.

I try not to generalize, but this point sticks out to me too much to almost not to.

How come they don't have hard working regular ass people on shows like this?

Is this just a white thing, or am I missing something here?

Nope, a good friend of mine has OCD (he's black)...his isn't really that severe but he told me some wild shit one day when I was at his crib playin Madden:

I noticed that dude doesn't like to drive when we go out, but I never really asked him about it...his OCD was so bad that he would always think that he was gonna hit someone with his car. He said driving in itself was like a personal torture for him, even though he knew he didn't actually hit anyone, it was like his mind couldn't move past the thought. He said the same thing about other shit (locking doors, turning off the stove, etc.)...it got to the point where dude said he would get up 5 or 6 times a night and check to make sure he locked his door, even though he KNEW he had locked it.

:smh:

Is that right fam? Could u share?

for starters magazines and newspapers if i am not the first person that touches them and open them i will not read it. before i read them i must go through and rip out every single subscription card. If i get a magazine in the mail and the corners are slightly bent or something like that won't read it.

To the OP the answer is No.

To everyone who thinks they have a slight case or actually have it, you don't. You just have an issue or a hang-up.

OCD will drive you insane and change the way you live your life. You can't help but do something over and over again regardless if it makes sense. Don't fool yourselves.

Wow. At least he knew it was severe. Is he getting treatment for it?

Yeah...he's on meds for it now, and I've noticed that he's a lot less tense whenever we hang out. But he dealt w/ it for 6 years before he went to the doctor and got it diagnosed, and you could tell it was hard for him to even bring it up when he told me about it and I been knowin this dude since we were in 4th grade.

Word. Is it only magazines and newspapers? How about bills and the rest of the mail?

that my dear sir is not true i have been diagnosed with Ocd.And it is very slight all i do is count every day i count everything when i have the urge and the numbers have to be an equal number or i will continue to count. And it's stupid shit like shapes, and letters.I have counted everything in my house and at work over and over again that i know it will not be even just to count till i get to an even number then i am satisfied.I have even counted the digital display on a clock to see if it is even and if it is not i will continue counting til i get even and i am straight. There are many many different forms of OCD.Believe that

Cool. Are meds the absolute solution for cases of OCD or are there other ways of treating it?

For one of the broads in the show, she had to take her fear head on in order to control her impulses and the minute she did, she was straight.

Is it primarily fear based or control based?

I would say No. OCD is not just a white thing.

For instance, there are plenty of niggas on BGOL who post fat chicks - swearing that they and constantly obsessing about how "thick" they are while trying to fuck these same Robeast in the club later that weekend.

i got ocd so no. i have to eat a certain way like all my food has to be separated, i have to brush my teeth a certain way, shower a certain way, i have many routines and ticks that i have learned to control over the years. weed helps alot :D

I dunno...my boy did mention that he did some therapy as a precusor to being diagnosed, but he didn't really go into detail about it. My boy's case is a chemical imbalance...he said the neurons that fire in your brain that are supposed to give you closure on tasks don't work for him...the meds are for his serotonin and dopamine levels.

^^^also i hate being in cars, i don't fly or go on anything that goes on water, i wont go into any kind of body of water, i don't walk over grates or manholes and the list goes on but again weed really helps:D

How bout because IT'S ON MTV!

Of course you're going to see priviledged white kids there!

No one wants to watch regular check to check people struggle with shit.

I'm ocd. I wash my hands at least 20 times a day, they can get dirty but I have to keep stopping to wash them. I have to dry them with paper towels if I don't have paper towels I have to have a folded towel that hasn't been used. If neither are available I keep 2 bottles of hand sanitizer in my purse and one in my truck.

I keep tons of paper towels at home and at least 3 rolls in my desk. My parents said it's been like that since I was young but they couldn't break my obsession.

i honestly think i have a slight case of it.

same here. for example, I have 3 light switches in the hallway and I'll walk up/down the stairs to switch off the light down stairs just so they're all in the same position or at the very least the 2 on "outsides" match(either up or down) ... when I was a little kid if I saw a car I liked I'd have to touch it with both hands

but these days I've kind of decided that shit is stupid and won't give in unless its something that I know will reallllly bug me

That hand washing - germaphobia thing is probably the most common type of OCD.

Had one of those dudes at work one time. He pissed me off one week, so the next Monday I waited till he left and took all the hand santizer and paper towels off his desk and watched him just freak out the next day.

I would freak out too. Coworker spilled something and use my paper towels and I was pissed because she is nasty and those were just more germs.

If someone touch my keyboard, etc I lysol it down AS SOON AS THEY LEAVE.

Now this is OCD. Coco, can you control it at all? What if you are somewhere and you aren't driving and there is nothing there that you can use? What do you do? My wife works with people with OCD and other types of behavioral issues, so this is really interesting to hear about

1. Do not confuse OCD with Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder. Obsessive-Compulsive personality disorder involves a pervasive pattern of preoccupation with orderliness, perfectionism, and control and usually onsets by early adulthood.

2. Superstitions and repetitive checking behaviors are common in everyday life. A diagnosis of OCD will only be considered if they are particularly time consuming (at least one hour) or result in clinically significant impairment or distress. In other words if you are stuck in your compulsion for at least an hour, or your compulsion impairs your ability to be productive, causes you distress, or interferes in your ability to have interactions with others, you probably aren't OCD and will probably not be diagnosed OCD.

My lil brother has it. His fiance is a slob, so they make a perfect couple. He's always cleaning EVERYTHING, it bothers him to see a piece of paper on a table. And if he doesn't remove it, it will bother him all day.

I'm, a firefighter and work with a Mexican dude that is OCD.Dude has to have every item in his toiletry bag(toothpaste, handkerchiefs, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant etc) placed in certain spots on his nightstand. He gets to work early just to place his stuff and make his bed. When you look at his stuff, everything is at right angles.Once,I borrowed some of his toothpaste and he wanted to make sure that HE put it back.
