Is it ok to leave an external hard drive plugged in when it's off?

I just turned it off and took the usb cord out of my laptop, but I left it plugged into the wall over night. Is this ok, or do I need to unplug it? Will it ruin my data if I leave it plugged in?

it should go into standby mode, so when you plug it up it will start spinning up again

i leave me shit plugged in all day everyday....but im not saying to do that either....

yo i had a fantom hdd long time ago and left it plugged up for months and one day i decided to unplug it and as soon as i plugged it up the hdd broke. i heard a noise when i plugged it up and it stopped workin.
