Is Family Matters Being Rebooted As A Cartoon?

In an age of reboots, prequels, sequels, and spinoffs, Bryton James has a novel plan for bringing Family Matters back: switching up the medium.

The actor, who spent eight seasons playing adolescent Richie Crawford on the beloved sitcom, tells Entertainment Weekly exclusively that he's "had an idea to take the show and turn it into an animated series," which would involve "taking the old episodes and modernizing them and kind of starting from scratch for the new generation."

James — who recently crossed over from The Young and the Restless to the soap's new sister series Beyond the Gates — says that he "got pretty far along" with his animated Family Matters idea, including getting "a production company in line to finance" and bringing "everybody on board," even breakout star Jaleel White.

But, he adds, "it's sitting in Warner Bros.' hands right now… That plan is still kind of floating around out there, and I'm still trying to pursue it."

A source familiar with Warner Bros. Animation tells EW that they are aware of James' interest in doing a reboot but the project has not moved beyond that.

Family Matters would certainly work as a cartoon, considering the show essentially became a live action cartoon.

Make it family friendly and for kids and this could be a great way to reboot this franchise.

They keep talking about a reboot and it goes no where.

A live action reboot is going nowhere because Jo-Marie Payton won't agree to it unless Judy is reintroduced, and with Jaimee Foxworth leaving porn in the late 90s and then essentially coming back to it 25 years later with OnlyFan, that's not going to happen.

So why would she do a cartoon version if they still wouldn't bring her back?

They don't have use the original actors for voice actors, except for Jaleel White.

All of the cast are older; Reginald VelJohnson, Jo-Marie Payton, and Telma Hopkins are in their 70s, (Rosetta LeNoir is deceased), and that might be reflected in their voices. Julie Kavner is in her 70s and her voice work as Marge Simpson does sound a bit different from the way it sounded when she was younger.
