Is Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski the greatest coach in NCAA Men's basketball history?

First of all, I HATE Duke basketball, but having a debate with some crew, the argument was is Coach Krzyzewski the greatest ever!? I know John Wooden won more Chips, but to be this consistently good a coach over almost a 40 year career, says a lot! I'm still on the fence, but trying to take the 'hate' out of the equation, it's hard to argue with numbers, longevity and success...

I know someone is going to say Wooden, and they wouldn't be wrong with that opinion, but I like to look at how things were in his era. There was only a small handful of schools that had access to the best players and that were playing on TV. Plus, IIRC, there weren't all of the recruiting limits they have now. To deal with more comp for blue chippers, limits on player quantity, EVERYONE playing on TV, and still accomplish what he did, Coach K deserves his props, especially when you factor in Dook's academic requirements. Btw, I loathe Dook!

Look at Wooden's era, and how things were in college bball. Look at what happened to Rupp's team when he finally faced black players.

I dont think Wooden is the best. Like I dont agree those old Celtic teams deserve all the greatest team ever accolades they receive. Wooden and Auerbach simply got all of the best players who probably wouldve won with or without them. Hell I think most coaches are overrated.

Kind of adding to the op argument, it's true, for him to do what he is doing today in these times it is a feat, and you notice that he rarely played freshman but due to the change in the landscape he adapted that is the mark of a great coach, is he a douche sure, but who cares if people like you on the way to the top, he never cared

I love Dean Smith to death, but this can't be denied.
And to answer the OP's question, No, Coach is not the greatest of all time.
That title has to go to John Wooden

As for OP. Coach K may be the best to ever do it unfortunately. Given the era, consistency, and doing it in the most competitive conference in the 90s bodes well for his argument. The guy also has 4 titles and will have his 5th before the end of this decade (probably within the next 3 years).

I would like to see how he does with a big man dominated team like this one next season...don't think he has had one before.

No not Laetner...most of coach K's teams have had inter-changeable parts.

This year with Okafor,the battle cry will be 'get the ball down low'.

How so?

All of his title teams and most of his FF teams had atleast three all American level players except his most recent. That 2010 team was trash and is what puts him over the top as possibly the greatest ever imo.

Yup. And they lost that championship because he didn't feed that beast. That was when I started questioning K's true coaching ability. He has since made up for that though. But at that moment was when things got fuzzy for me.

That's one aspect of Coach Krzyzewski's career that is often overlooked and that is he always had the most talent year in and year out.

Yea but he quieted the critics (myself being one) with the Tourney run in 2010. It was a unusually weak field but he still coached a subpar squad of guys to a title.

If you think duke doesn't get great players you haven't been paying attention. that being said I think there are coaches doing a lot more with less talent. Isso, Calhoun when he was there, Boeheim and a few others. no need to step in the wayback machine.

He was...but different kinda player than Okafor.

Brand is a power forward,I believe Okafor is a true center.

cuz they all are great in certain aspects.....coach k, dean, wooden, knight,...
i've met John Chaney before....and was recruited by him.
i always thought he was just one mean bastard until i met him in person....changed the way i viewed him forever. really nice and humble dude.
not to mention he was the first black coach to 700 wins

If I'm not mistaken being able to recruit top talent is also a measure of a great college coach right! This Dude has been doing that at a high level for over 30 years now. What other coach has had his OVERALL level of success for damn near 4 decades and counting?

In my opinion, the March Madness Tourney was ‘rigged’ in Duke's favor for waaaay too long. :hmm:

For a LONG TIME Duke had the benefit of practically playing ‘home games’ during the early rounds of the NCAA Tourney. :yes:

Go back and check the history & locations of ‘where’ Duke played during the Tourney.

Every year, the NCAA always sent EVERY school to the other side of the map to play their first 2 rounds.

Big East schools would have to travel to the West Coast, or Pac-10 schools would travel to the East Coast and play games in ‘hostile’ territory.

Year after year after year.

Except. For. Duke. :hmm:

Duke was THE ONLY school that was consistently allowed to play close to home. :hmm:
Moreso than ANY other school.

During the entire 1980’s, 1990’s, and 2000’s… seemed like they ALWAYS played their first 2-3 rounds of the Tourney right in their backyard. :rolleyes:

Their opponents would always take a 4-hour plane ride… meanwhile Duke just took a 30-minute drive. :rolleyes:

In the NCAA Tourney, ‘WHERE’ you play…. makes a difference. :yes:

- A Duke team playing in/or near North Carolina is going to get too many bullshit ‘calls’ made in their favor. :yes:
- A Duke team playing far away from North Carolina is NOT going to get ANY bullshit ‘calls’ made in their favor. :smh:

‘Where’ Duke play determines ‘how much’ help they get from the refs. :yes:

So I can’t respect Coach K’s accomplishments when Duke was allowed to play SO MANY games right in (or very close by) North Carolina during the NCAA Tourney, while EVERY OTHER school was sent waaaaaaay across the map. :smh:
