Right Now, If your going to get a PhD, Make sure its something of value, Get a Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Medicine, Shit Become a Lawyer.

This is the Year 2011 If your going to get a PhD in Marketing, Liberal Arts, Communication and all that other bullshit, Be prepared to be in Debt and Work at Fedex for 12 Dollars a Hour,

What are you getting a PhD in?

People go to college for bullshit, and expect to come out and make a good living. If you're going to go to school, make sure you're being practical before you get in so much debt.

I caution against law right now. That job market is fucked up more than alot of the others. All those large companies going out of business and slowing business has caused the market to be saturated by older/experienced attorneys looking for work. And firms would rather hire them than a fresh grad that they would have to train.

Alot of these colleges are just scams, keep in mind college is a business and like any other it's purpose is to make money.

Alot of these people who struggle finding jobs are older people who decided to go to college, these schools target them.

For those who get into a good school at 18 college is great but for those who're 25 and decide to do something with themselves and attend these scam schools college isn't worth it, a trade is better.

Like dude said at half of kids who finish high school aren't ready for college, any real college. These private schools are mostly scams and any Community College is ten times harder than them academically.

The government needs to push trades and bring manufacturing back to the US or else shit will get real.... very real.

Plus its over saturation, 15-20 Years ago, most people just had a high school diploma and not to many people had a college degree so its was valuable

Its 2011 and Damn near everybody has a college degree. So its value is not worth the paper its printed on.

I've got the Masters in Info Sys so I'm considering either the doctorate in IS or Organizational Management.

Unfortunately with all the foreign competition in IT and in research I question if it's worth it at all.

I totally agree with this. I know some lawyers and THEY told me their industry is over saturated and that most of them aren't making those good dollars anymore. Some of them work for the state and got laid off, now they're struggling.

No people with GED's make more money. Just stop at any participationg Mcdonalds and ask..

Wow all you do is post negative shit and you took it out of context. He did not say just have a GED or PhD. He added in the economy and other factors.

why dont you fuck off and answer his question then, or is it you dont have shit to say?

I've been preaching this for madd years, never went to college, never believed in it. Always had my own businesses. Always made bank.

But if it's a trade or profession, I don't knock college for those. But for people who went to school for an MBA or some nonsense you could pick up a book and learn on your own, I've never understood it.

I look at the majority of my peers from HS, they all mostly went to school, where they ended up, bank tellers or some data entry position. Nuts...

I learned IT and got a six figure income from reading books on my own and "obtaining" knowledge online (thanks to places like BGOL, lol)

But my wife said everyone aint like me, to pick up a book and learn on my own, so they get led to the slaughter house and get taken for college nonsense.

I bought my first crib at 19, then got another at 27. Frigg college, but everyone don't have that hustle mentality for bizness. And I'm not talking pharmaceutical, lol...

Yeah I also had a High School Diploma and Make Over $300,000 a Year Being Self Employed Being a Freelance Software Engineer, Only Cost me under $100 bucks for a 2 Books on C Programming and Objective C.

But to be Fair I understand that everybody can't learn like that, Some people need a ClassRoom Setting. I For One Hating School and prefer to learn at my own pace.

Plus I also have luck as Programming Jobs Are almost Recession Proof as a typical C Programmer (Mainly Objective) can command $100+ a Hour. Since Devices such as the Iphone and Android came into the market.

I asked you before so I'll ask you again.

Where did you get a "start" from? How many years of "experience" do you have? You didn't just walk into 300k.

Post some facts, I can say I'm a millionaire if I really wanted to.

I say no bitch. But like dude said in another thread he went to get a job because he needed money but they would not higher him because he was educated and they knew he would not stay long. He said he would hire a high school grad or a GED holder because most of them would stay for years. But like dude said it all depends on what you get a PhD in. If you get it in plant watching you are fucked.

You and me have the same feeling, I can't sit in a classroom and take the teacher pet and stupid ass people who don't follow the course material and ask dumb questions. I need to typically study shit on my own. I used to cut HS like daily for the rest of the years out of being a freshman. My mom's bought me the Magic Of Thinking Big at 17 and it forever changed my life. All I read are self help books typically.

For those looking for a hustle, look into hiring a developer to build an app on iphone or android and make some bank. You can get developers on ODesk, Guru or Freelancer. Make something meaningful and market the shit out of it. Shit can even make it free and throw ads on there.

Folks need to pay real close attention to the part in red.

Is that part about almost everyone having a degree reflected in the 2010 census info? As of the last one in 2000the number of people with BA/BS degrees were only like 30%.

could you answer the question please?

a pHD is very valuable. as long as its in something worthwhile like science or engineering etc. liberal artsand history for example are a joke in terms of a phd

Now of days PhD are worth more in science fields. I'm getting my PhD in an interdisciplinary field with a concentration in Atmospheric Science. Skills I have obtained along the way includes a Math (BA and MS) and Programming (FORTRAN, a little C, some Java and other weather related programming) background. My goal is to work for the government (NOAA, NASA, Air Force, or US NAVY as a researcher).

For now I'm in shit ass debt, but I know that I am setting my self up with jobs whenever I finish this school shit because of all the skills I learned so far. Once I can get some stability in my life financially I will begin work my way to start some type of business as a Weather and Climate Consultant.

So people are good at not needing to go to school to live. I believe if a person is going to invest into school it better be in a field that still has a high demand (i.e., Medical, Engineering, Mathematics, Accounting, Computer Science and other related fields)

Its plenty of us on here who seen the light. My wife got mad at me cause I spent 2K in books and gear for building out a cisco lab. When I applied for my next job (6 mo later) my salary jumped 30K from a (2K investment). Some of us get it others wont'. College is so 1950's

i don't think the ends justify the means in most cases for PhD's...in my opinion the only exceptions are engineering and accounting....especially for black men there is a demand in the accounting field...most would say if you got a masters and your CPA you good but if you trying to teach its definitely worth it

where did you get your stuff from.... I want to do networking but just reading books is hard for me....I know I can get a better grasp of it if I could do some hands on training

I would not suggest it right now unless you want to be a professor or it is in the STEM realm. Even then with the economy the way it is they're not even in the same stable position they were once in.

the Ph.D. is a very valuable degree for most fields. It by no means, is for everybody. But it does has an important place. The Doctorate of Philosophy is a research degree. It goes beyond typical cumulative knowledge and even application. The research acquired from many Ph.D programs is often the basis for even newer research. I believe that those who obtain Ph.D's master more theory than application in any given field.
