"Kimbo" vs. James Thompson at May 31 EliteXC-CBS?
by MMAjunkie.com Staff [mmajunkie-staff] on Mar 30, 2008 at 2:16 pm in - News -
The very first MMA event to appear on major U.S. network television will feature a main event with Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson (2-0).

Unfortunately, EliteXC never announced his opponent at Saturday's co-promoted show with Strikeforce, which took place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. The announcement was expected to be made at the event, but instead, Ferguson was called to the cage for a general introduction.

However, according to one report, James Thompson (14-8) could be the guy to face Ferguson in May.

The May 31 EliteXC event takes place at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. and airs in Saturday primetime on CBS.

According to fiveouncesofpain.com, a rumored bout with Ron Waterman (15-5-2) never materialized because a deal couldn't be worked out. Instead, Thompson -- a British fighter who's lost six of his past eight fights -- appears to be the leading candidate.

Ferguson, who rose to fame as underground fighter marketed on YouTube and other video-sharing sites, has since teamed up with Bas Rutten to train MMA. After an exhibition victory over Ray Mercer, Ferguson posted a 19-second TKO of Bo Cantrell and a 43-second KO of David "Tank" Abbott. Both fights took place with EliteXC, with whom Ferguson has signed a long-term contract.

Also slated to take place at the May 31 event is a EliteXC middleweight championship bout between title-holder Robbie Lawler and Scott Smith. Additionally, Phil Baroni meets Murilo "Ninja" Rua, and Tom Murphy takes on Brett Rogers. In women's action, Gina Carano is expected to meet Kaitlin Young.

Kimbo is gonna have a field day with this guy:lol:

Excellent linkage, JOHNIZ.

Yes ... the FIGHT NIGHT LIVE #13 card was great. It's just unfortunate how some of the results turned out.

I was really surprised with Alexander/Irvin. "The Sandman" is quick with his damn knees and hands, huh? Terry Martin - round #2 - flying knee years ago, and the result with H. Alexander this go-around. Geez.

Tommy Speer is a fucking bum. There. I've said it. That guy shouldn't have even come close to placing 2nd on season 6 of The Ultimate Fighter. He doesn't have the experience or skill set needed in the octagon. And I think he's still WAY off with his attack. Mac Danzig made easy work of him in 2.5 - 3 minutes to win the damn show in late-2007. And Anthony Johnson straight fucking EMBARASSED him on Wednesday evening. Johnson is no joke. That cat is strong, agile, and hits HARD. I see him as a smaller, leaner, different weight class-Houston Alexander-type fighter. Both are superb. Speer doesn't deserve to get featured on these main cards either. I would have much rather seen Gamburyan's untelevised fight, or Clay Guida's for that matter (he's one of the most exciting fighters in all of mixed martial arts - ANY organization). * He was in the background on his cellphone in Joe Lauzon's locker room in the commercial interlude pre-breaks leading up to the main event of Florian/Lauzon. He had his backpack on, etc.

Nate Diaz has really impressed me this past year. Sure as hell looked like Kurt Pellegrino had his number. Did you see those times when he had Diaz's arm pinned, and was unloading those short-delivery punches to the face (that cut open Nate's eyebrow)? In total - he threw nearly 30 punches in those 2 skirmishes or so (I was counting). And to have the poise, ground game, and patience to wait until his opportunity in the 2nd round and lock in that move. Damn. SOLID. He's no fucking joke, and nor is older bro' NICK. And props to Nate for always putting on a good show. He's a solid young fighter ... knows what the fuck he's doing ... isn't a bum-ass muthafucka like Tommy Speer, and also gives props where props are due. Mentioned his trainers a number of times, and ALWAYS reps hard for Stockton, CA. Good on him.

I gotta agree with you H-Funk it was a great card. I think that might be it for your boy Houston Alexander. He looked bad in both of his back to back losses, all though you could make an argument that that Superman punch would have taken most people out.

Damn I can't front on Nate Diaz anymore. He's looked really really good in has last few fights. Every time I think he's in trouble he finds a way out of it. I thought for sure he was done. I was impressed at how calm he was the whole fight even when he was getting pounded.

I'm not too sure about the competition on the latest TUF this season though. I wasn't impressed with anyone really hopefully the rest of the cats will bring it next week.

Houston Alexander is a complete powerhouse when his game is on. He straight demolished Keith Jardine (who beat up on Chuck Liddell). And he's just an all-around, powerful fan fave. I think he'll be around for awhile yet, C'. Too much of a prospect.

Nate Diaz is definitely making a name for himself. I like how he added that it's unfortunate that people often see the TUF fighters as being 'sheltered'. Noting he doesn't want to be perceived that way, and isn't going to duck opponents. Props to him on beating some credible guys ('cuz it's not like he's being paired with chump material - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathan_Diaz ).

Hopefully TUF season 7 will warm up. I dig the format with 32 fighters being required to "WIN" their way onto the show and be a part of the 16 official contestants. Too many seasons cats have pussed out or let their in-house behaviour mandate their futures. Not this season. Get rid of the bullshit - and come with the real. Forrest and Rampage will be cool, funny coaches too in that neither really is known for being in that position. They're students first  . Should be fun once everything gets under way.

Nate Diaz has come a long way. That was a nice triangle to finish the fight. Props to Nate on winning the show, finishing everybody and finishing every opponent thrown at him up till now. Anybody have the high quality megaupload links to these fights?

We'll get those links for you, bro. Keep an eye on this thread.

Yeah ... Diaz has been one of the most impressive young 20-somethings in the past 1/2 year. Props to dude.

Lol @ his patience against Pellegrino and then locking in that triangle ... flexing ... pumping the double fingers and winning that shit midway through the 2nd. CLASSIC. Joe Rogan was cracking up at that shit during the post-fight interview.

Liddell speaking down on Kimbo's popularity in the game:

Chuck Liddell Irked by Kimbo’s Popularity

MMAjunkie.com Staff, MMAjunkie.com Apr 1, 8:42 pm EDT

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell (21-5), arguably MMA’s biggest star just as the sport began its march toward the mainstream, is appalled by Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson (2-0) and says a checkered past of beating up a “bunch of guys on the street” is the only reason for his popularity.

Liddell talked about EliteXC’s prized heavyweight in a recent interview with our friend Mark Gilbert of The Sun.

According to Liddell, Ferguson is training and learning MMA, but he “hasn’t done anything” to earn the praise he receives.

“Kimbo’s one of those guys who doesn’t have any ground game,” Liddell told The Sun. “He’s training and he’s learning but he’s been built up as such a big star, and that’s the thing that bothers me.

“People talk about him like he’s the next great thing when he really hasn’t done anything. He’s been built up because of the Internet and him beating a bunch of guys on the street.”

Ferguson’s initial fame came from underground fight videos posted on YouTube and other video-sharing websites. Based in Miami, the 34-year-old almost always dominated his opponents in the bare-knuckle fights. (Ferguson, though, was eventually stopped by Boston police officer Sean Gannon, who was later signed by the UFC with a mere 1-0 professional record.)

“I could make some impressive knockout videos too if you let me walk outside and just punch people and knock them out—“hey you, come fight!” Liddell told The Sun. “F*** we can make a highlight reel tomorrow and go round beating people up and talking about it. We could just go up to people and start dropping them. Wow!”

Liddell is currently slated to face Rashad Evans in the main event of UFC 85, an event that takes place June 7 in London. After winning seven consecutive fights, Liddell suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time in his career, losing his belt to Quinton Jackson in the process. He rebounded for a victory over Wanderlei Silva in December.

Ferguson, meanwhile, is slated to headline the first EliteXC-CBS event on May 31. The organization hasn’t announced an opponent, but James Thompson appears to be the leading candidate.

 Thank you very much, I've been looking for these high quality video fights. Tommy Speers had this crazy confused look on his face after the knockout, that was brutal. Glad to see these MMA threads updated after every event. I was also looking forward to watching Nick Diaz fight last week, I hate the CSAC and their rules. Hopefully we'll see him fight soon.

Sure thing, bro.

Definitely ... Nick's a solid fighter too. Some tough kids in that Diaz family, for real. Props due.

Tommy Speers is a waste of space and needs to be back home on the farm with his family. He got embarassed by DANZIG at the TUF 6 finale, and Anthony Johnson made QUICK work of him at Fight Night Live 13 last week. Dude just doesn't have the chops. He's a specimen at 170lbs, but that's about it. Too raw. Too bad "War Machine" Koppenhaver didn't beat him on the show. That kid's talented: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon_Koppenhaver

Word. Then he had a GREAT battle against his in-house homie Jared Rollins (J-Rod) during the TUF 6 finale when he was on the main card. They battled it out well.
