I'm watching The Wire again. Few more questions...

Been watching the shit again from season 1 over the last few weeks and noticed some little things that I didn't catch before.

1. When Weebay introduced Cutty to Avon, they already noticed that prison "broke" dude. Why did they still move forward w/ putting him on based on shit he did over a decade ago?

2. When Avon got out, Stringer mentioned that they were making so much legal money that they could put assets (like that fly lil apartment) in their own names now. From what i remember, all they showed is Stringers overly ambitious commercial development flops. What other legal biz besides the print shop was bringing them enough legit bread to move in the open? I'm thinking String was making a killing in the real estate game before Clay talked him into big time commercial development which was over his head.

3. When Avon and Strings lawyer told Stringer about Clay Davis and the "golden goose" scam he was running it made me wonder how could such a high profile cat like Clay Davis get away with that type of hustle for that long without getting ratted out, hit, or exposed? Taking six figures from big hustlers and drug dealers all over the city?

4. In Season 1 Deangelo told Stringer that their product was weak. Stringer said some shit like, "fuck the product. its all the same. when its weak we just sell twice as much". In Season 3 he changed his tune and was like, "fuck the corners and territory wars, its all about the product." Was this an oversight or were they just showing that he was taking on a more "business minded" approach to the game?

5. Was Bubs a homo? He always had some impressionable young dopehead under his wing. Maybe just a homeless father figure?

6. Did Havoc from Mobb Deep have a cameo in Season 3? In one scene Snoop comes thru in a SUV and while she's talking to the cats outside she says something like "its a war going on outside..." which is a classic line from Survival of the Fittest on The Infamous Mobb Deep album. The driver in the SUV looks just like Havoc but not sure.

as far as the webay cutty thing i think only webay thought prison broke him, avon still had faith that he was still the same o.g as b4, he said somthing along those lines

I just finished watching them too because my girl never saw them. I skipped from 1 to 3.

1. They tried to ease him in and let him go at his own pace. Its not like they gave him any big responsibilities.

2. They probably didn't have time to go in depth but I'm sure String had some smaller projects before he met Clay.

3. Who was he going to be exposed by? If you snitch on him you will snitch on yourself and nobody would listen to a drug dealer anyway.

4. Change in philosophy and business practices. That was what the wire was about. Police catch up and they move to something new.

5. No homo

6. I remember that scene but would have to rewatch

Colin'd most of your post, but I can answer no 1.....

Cutty was an EXTRA heavy dude for them. Even "broken" he was still better at the game than 90% of their squad

that and Avon was a loyal cat too.

He was still a soldier though. And what else was he going to get into when he came home? There was definitely a loyalty thing there too. Had to at least offer dude some work since he took the fall for the squad

2. When Avon got out, Stringer mentioned that they were making so much legal money that they could put assets (like that fly lil apartment) in their own names now. There's a scene in Season 1 where Prez, Lester and Daniels are talking about all the legit "fronts" that the Barksdale crew has. Much more than the print shop, the funeral home etc. They named quite a few but I forget what else they said.

3. When Avon and Strings lawyer told Stringer about Clay Davis and the "golden goose" scam he was running it made me wonder how could such a high profile cat like Clay Davis get away with that type of hustle for that long without getting ratted out, hit, or exposed? For the same reason Cops stealing from Drug Dealers and hustlers and selling their product to other dealers? Who are you gonna tell? The cops? Then you've just put yourself in prison. You gonna hit a State Senator? You know how much heat that would bring on you and your organization? You just gotta take the L, and restack.

He changed his tune in Season 2 actually when they start getting the bullshit stepped on package. They started losing their clientele to them dudes across town. That's why he had to make the deal with Prop Joe who was getting that good work from The Greek.

5. Was Bubs a homo? He always had some impressionable young dopehead under his wing. Maybe just a homeless father figure?

I don't think so. I remember him making a comment about getting all kinds of pussy back in his day. "Yall don't know..." I think it was to Weebay and them

No. That was one of Marlo's muscle. You can see him in Season 4 too when Lex pops Fruit. He's in the little vacant lot and he tries to convince Marlo to air out Bodies corner and take the real estate. Chris convinces Marlo not to do it. Dude does look like Havoc though.

I still have never seen this series.....I keep telling myself I should watch it, but I never have the time to invest in a new show. Perhaps one day.

make sure you have time set aside. You're not going to be able to watch just one episode a week once u get the box sets.

There are two types of people in the world; people who know The Wire is the best show ever on television, and people who've never seen The Wire.

Preach....:yes::yes::yes::yes: I swear I thought the Wire was the ONLY reason for having HBO.... I dont even watch TV anymore... I have that empty feeling now .... like when the best peice of side pussy u had decided she want a man/fam/relationship and she can no longer suck and fuck u anymore:smh::smh::smh::smh:

shit hurt!!!!!!

Season 1 Barksdale could have regular dope because he had the towers and low rises with the muscle. He had a good connect with the market area to sell. Season 3 his muscle was gone , market gone , and now inferior priduct to the uncut dope off the ship. If that happens to any product you will have to.change strategy.....example auto industry of today. Why buy an expensive Chrysler when you cwn get a Honda for heaper and last longer ?

:yes::yes: I've never met anybody who's watched it and doesn't feel the same way. I may give it another go my damn self.

... and that's why I'm on season three now thanks to Netflix. With so many Wire references on this board and hearing so much about this Omar fella, I had to stop puttin' it off and running through it now. So far .... hmmmm .... It's ok! I may spoil it for you so stop reading now if you don't want to know, this is mainly for people who already seen it.

... was "The Docks" season 2 really worth watching? I thought the Wire was all pretty much all street. Sometimes I wanted to fast forward through those dock events but stuck it out. All the years of The Wire talk on here no mentioned the Docks, I was like "is this The Wire or Law & Order." There has been no "I gotta replay that again" moments from season 1 and 2. The "FUCK" crime scene search was funny.

I'll have to check this out. I didn't see much of the first season because I didn't have HBO at the time. All I saw that year was what was on when I was at someone's house. I really got in to the show in the second season when they were on the stuff with those cats on the docks. I had HBO then,. Avon and the rest of them weren't really a part of things then. So, even though I was able to get in to it from season 2 until the end, I still don't know some of the stuff that happened and carried over from the first season.

EDIT:

On another note, damn, I've missed every episode of Bill Maher this season. I gotta look at the whole shit On Demand...:smh::lol:

Yes. While you can understand Season 3 without it, you get so much more out of it by knowing what happened in Season 2. Knowing how that shit comes in, and that it's just not a black problem. And how the drug game is connected to so many people. How it's used to save people's jobs, and help the economy. Plus, u get a better view of Season 5 too in my opinion.

as far as the webay cutty thing i think only webay thought prison broke him, avon still had faith that he was still the same o.g as b4, he said somthing along those lines

Thats what I originally thought but find that scene and peep it again fam. All 3 of them had doubt in their faces.

But, they didnt force shit on the man. They hit him w/ a g pack and waited for him to come to them knowing aint shit out there for him to do.

He was a monster though. You could tell by how he strategized that hit on Marlos people but the youngboys fucked it up... Plus that whole mission got outshined by how well organized Marlos squad was. I think that was the 1st scene that you really saw them cats spring into action. I remember watching that scene for the 1st time thinking if this is the comp they go up against, then damn the barksdales are done.:smh:

............................

You dropped knowledge.

But on number 1... Did Cutty take the fall for Barksdale? Nah I thought he shot somebody in broad daylight, called 911 and turned himself in. So I'm a little confused about what ya'll are saying about loyalty. Unless you just mean Avon is being loyal to the game by looking out and trying to have faith in a legendary soldier from back in the day.

As for number 3 though... I still think that if dude was getting people all over town w/ the hustle...which is how the lawyer made it sound...that somebody would pop his ass eventually...heat or not. He's a state senator not a us senator. Those cats dont roll around with 24/7 staff and security.

I still have never seen this series.....I keep telling myself I should watch it, but I never have the time to invest in a new show. Perhaps one day.
I haev a torrent download for the entire series in the hollywood forum. Cop it and just watch 1 or 2 episodes whenever you get a chance. You will get pulled in almost immediately. As much as I like Boardwalk Empire, there is no competition.

The docks show the "weight" gets into our innner city... I fucking loved it... anyone who has made any real money in streets can appreciate Season 2...

c/s
I ain't never made street money but I really liked it ... for me it showed this isn't just some "ghetto-black" issue it is a bigger picture ... imo without season 2 it would just be another show glorifying the street crime in B-More ... season 4 iirc also did a good job of this flipside

Highly addictive show, if you really don't have the time to invest into 5 seasons

of new media, then stay away from it...because once you start getting into it :itsawrap:

Someone said use this scene to introduce someone to the wire ... I agree:

I say the opening scene, where Mcnaughlty is talking to the random Baltimore yo about a kid who got killed for robbing a dice game.

It kinda gives a glimpse in the type of psyche those dudes have.

Man I forgot how good season 1 was. The young boy Deangelo was a smart young dude. I really liked his character. The only thing I hated about season 1 was the fake ass gear they had them wearing. Baltimore niggas is some bamas but they not that bamafied like how they dress on season 1. Lol no Maryland nigga would walk around with snoop dog clothing and New york logo short sets.

The best seasons in order is 4 > 3 > 1 >5 >2

Yeah. Dude talking about Snot Boogie was good foreshadowing

2. When Avon got out, Stringer mentioned that they were making so much legal money that they could put assets (like that fly lil apartment) in their own names now. 3. Taking six figures from big hustlers and drug dealers all over the city?
.

2. Yes Stringer had a lot of real estate.

3. Clay Davis explained this to Lester in season 5. ("We bled that motherfucker")

What Clay did to Stringer was a special case because Stringer did all of his deals with Clay WITHOUT LEVY.

When drug dealers go to Clay to clean their money up they always have Levy with them to make sure they don't get fucked. Levy always has an agreement with Clay that he can bleed them a little (couple thousand) but not too much. (getting Bell for $250,000)

That's why Stringer fucked up trying to do all of those deals alone without Levy there to keep shit fair...

Yeah whenever I watch season 1 I  at the clothes them niggas had on.

But to be fair, the clothes back in 01-02 were fucking terrible :puke:

Exactly he lost his real estate and therefore needed better product to compete.Marlo had the corners but Avon and Stringer had the good dope.
