Okay, not to play the ultra-simp role, but this just seems like a rant about women who don't look like we want them to. That's fine among the fellas, and we have every right to have whatever expectations we want about women's physical appearance. Just as they have every right to tell us to kiss their asses and pass the fried chicken and creamed potatoes, please. But what is gained by beating chicks over the head with this shit? It ain't gonna "motivate" them to lose weight, so is the point just to humiliate them? If so, do you really get enjoyment from humiliating women? If a chick is overweight, you don't have to fuck her or even look at her. Just leave her the fuck alone and move on.

I get that many of ya'll are younger cats and never had wives where there was some shit you just didn't say. You will learn. But a video on female obesity on a female oriented board (is that what this is, I no longer know?) posted by a guy is just, at least to me, kind of silly and a waste of time.

If you were honestly trying to be helpful, I don't think you were. If you were trying to be an asshole you succeeded magnificently.

Mos Def appreciate your point of view... whats interesting to me is if I would have posted a joint on HIV or something folks would digest and feel it, but the moment we talk about something that is supposedly taboo in our community the gloves come on... the idea of the video was not to humiliate, but actually truly relate to how sistas are used by brothas threw the self esteem eliminating weight issue.. a pandemic that truly is killing us, my granny just passed from diabetes caused by obesity, I know are whole community is suffering from stories like these, I decided to attack the problem at the throat, now of course everyone isnt gonna have the temperament to digest but I think a few will, and as long as those few get it I feel satisfied... much respect to you regardless...

Rules of posting on SOL:

1. Nothing that even remotely points out something negative.

He could have cut all that down to about 2 minutes.
But I definitely agree...obesity is a problem in our community. Becoming healthy requires a lifestyle/attitude change. Many people (not just black women) aren't willing to do that.

This maybe the best posting to hit SOL yet. I'm glad he didn't shorten this, he touch on so many factors that affect our daily lives I have to give him his props. Obesity is destroying our families and friends. Just think about this, when was the last time you or someone you were with went out and all you had was a salad? Exactly! We all can do better and we need to.

The focus was on women but we men too are as guilty. We all need to be more focused on what we're doing (and not doing) to our bodies. We don't exercise enough and when you combine that with poorly planned meals its the perfect recipe for health problems.

Diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease are nothing to be ignored. I'm sure everyone here knows someone who suffers with one or the other or in some cases a combination of 2 or more. My father had high blood pressure and was diabetic. Think I'm not concerned.... he wasn't even FAT! We all need to change our mindsets on our health.

TO THE OP THIS IS A FANTASTIC POST!

I'm not a chick, but all I'm saying is that if your aim was to impart a motivational- or even an informative message- from my perspective that was not what the piece conveyed. It's obvious that several disagree with me, and unlike many on this board I can accept that and move on.

I manage a group of extremely creative and highly motivated professionals. The one way I can guarantee they will not do what I need them to do is start off with how fucked up they are. That's what the piece said to me. It had a series of extremely obese chicks and samples of very obese body shots to a male may have said "how can she let herself get that fat" but I think to a woman says "boy are you disgusting." And since I don't know you, I will not question your motives. But knowing cats the way I do, they are not concerned about obesity in black women because of their love for the black community (if they were so concerned they would pay their fucking child support!); they don't like obesity because fat chicks don't make their dicks get hard.

Just my take, dude. No biggie to me either way.

Robeson, my take on the video was its a wakeup call. A call for everyone to make better choices on what's fast becoming a life and death crisis for our people.

I really didn't look at it as an attempt to insult women. There's enough of that already floating around.

As one of the more insightful posters on the board (intelligence here is in so short supply I dare not take it for granted), I will accept your take prima facie. A wake up call is, indeed, needed, and I am a strong advocate of whatever works. But the wake up call is not for sisters to lose weight, it's for ALL of us to make better life choices, PERIOD. Lung cancer has run through my family like a hot knife through butter (okay, spare me the posts about smoking not being the only cause of lung cancer), but do we stop smoking? Hell NO! And let's not even talk about what crack has done to our community.

I get that his focus was on female obesity. Is that more critical a problem than our apparent inability to have stable families?

Several females responded in a not wholly negative manner- though they did take issue with his pointing the finger at women. I'm just saying when it comes to chicks and their weight, his approach hinted of a lack of experience in the area. You are not going to shock or scare black women into losing weight- just like you are not going to scare a drug addict to stop taking drugs. Don't you think they know when they are fat? What they need is a strategy for success. We in the black community are experts at re-stating the problem ad infinitum. My philosophy is let's focus on solutions. It has worked tremendously in my professional life, so that's how I look at everything.

As always a pleasure trading thoughts with you. In my other response to this thread I remarked on the fact we men are as guilty as the women. I would've loved to asked the guy who produced the video his motive.

In light of the recent unwarranted attacks on some of the women here I can understand your take on the video.

I think what much of this amounts to is laziness and greed. Here in Hotlanta there's so many places to eat its astonishing. You can moon-walk from one end of Fulton County to the other with all the greasy places to eat here. Even worse is the "All-You-Can-Eat places. I've seen women eat 3 heaping plates full of food then go back for desert. Would they pile it on like that at home? But again I'm not looking to bash the women. Like I said the men are rocking the same boat.

Health problems aside mostly everyone could begin to lose weight if better selections were made on what we eat and the portions, hence the solution you spoke of. I admit I had a rough time on the portion factor but I learned.

Bravo. Portions are the key. Even though I have my excercise regimen where I want it (elliptical, walking, bike riding, weights), not only do I have to keep an eye on portions but those accursed potato chips. But your point is excellently made.

I go to lunch with very overweight women sometimes, and the shit they eat makes no sense whatsoever. It's obvious food is a comfort for them. I try to tell them, you start getting in shape, you will feel so much better you can put that garbage down. They cannot get off of that fucking couch, and if they go for a short walk every couple of weeks they think they have done something. Same with dudes.

But I agree with your take in toto.

If malice wasn't intended then the poster would've put an equal measure of attention on the issues of black men, and then moved on to another group. It's not as if black men have any sort of superiority over black women in terms of what's "killing" the community. This thread is just about "rock tossing" and "scapegoating," and not about legit concern.

And it's black men who continue to crave fat asses which translates to support for obesity. Just check out BGOL, where fit/slim black (and other) women are constantly ridiculed. Someone is delivering a mixed message.

not only portions but prioritizing quality food over what's cheap.

yeah this one is hard

i did a report on this for my nutrition class a long time ago

1) unhealthy foods are cheaper
2) a good portion of the supermarkets in the area don't have a lot of healthy food

this is from my women's studies class project
3) food advertisements in magazines geared at black women are typical food of cheaper quality, low health and able to be made in mass quantity in comparison to mags geared at white women.

i remember i was looking for Sunkist low sodium tuna (it has like 30=< mg's or w/e measurement of salt versus the usual 250=> in regular tuna) and i went to like 4 supermarkets in the neighborhood...some never heard of it and others said that they don't get those shipments. i went to the Sunkist website...complained...they sent me a list of stores in the area that should have it...i pointed out that they didn't...2 weeks later...i got a call about a shipment from one of the stores and i got coupons :D

but anyway

we need to prioritize....yes healthy food is expensive and u prolly are gonna have to go to a far away supermarket to get it (depending on ur area) but that should be as equally important as those clothes u buy that are mad pricey and how u plan a special trip to go 3 towns over to get it.

but...for those who have a lot of mouths to feed...that may be an issue:(

damn i wish i had a green thumb...i would grow damn near everything...maybe i should do a lil experiment ;)

I had to cut them out, after I noticed that I would grab a bag every day for lunch. Something bout the crispiness, makes me want to get a bag right now.

1) unhealthy foods are cheaper

So true, and when you live in certain communities the unhealthy foods are cheaper and more readily available. The restaurant that serves salad / grilled chicken will be open till 11 and cost $10 - $20 per person. The chicken spot, where everything is fried, is open all night and for $5 you can have a "tasty" meal.

I don't think that the author intended for the poem to be malicious. He's an artist, and in order to bring attention to this issue, it has to be done in a manner that draws attention and forces discussion. I'm sure that if the video was bout black men, it would have the same tone. I probably feel this way because I've always kept this statement in mind: "when you point your finger at someone, remember that there are three other fingers pointing at you". My mother told me this when I was you and its stuck to me; when i watched the video, I was also considering the fact that I still have some poor eating habits that I need to change.

Obesity is a huge problem in our community (I got an uncle @ 700 lbs, and my grandmother is at least 400lbs), and it needs to change. But in order to do that, the underlying problems have to be attacked. Mental health: there are alot of black people who eat because they're depressed. Poor food selection: different nationalities set up businesses in the ghetto poisoning us all under the guise of cheap food (mcdonald's, chicken spots, super markets with little to no healthy food choices). Poor eating habits: some black people aren't taught how to eat healthy, or how to shop healthy. Microwave dinners, and "instant" products, sugar cereals, fatty meats and junk food are all regular items on shopping lists. Lack of excersise, some dont' make the time to excersise. And money, ju said it before, the healthy food is more expensive. Untill changes are made, obesity will be a problem.

Quality of food is a must and that's not easy. This morning for breakfast was sausage, scrambled eggs, grits and toast, I had fruit and a protein shake. Them sausages were smelling good but I ignored them because I've learned. I can't indulge all the time and now when I elect to do so I make sure its what I really want.

you can eat actual "food" (sausage, eggs, grits, etc.) it's just that you can't throw 4 sausage links 2 eggs and a bowlful of grits on your plate. and the lifestyle most people have nowadays especially with work(sitting in front of a monitor 9-5) is what's killing people. because of that lifestyle, most are eating on the go, and not eating the right thing.

Selective reading is not acceptable. I agreed with the video, but you just skipped over that part. Please stop being so typical, and actually add something of value to this thread.
I fail to see where anyone is being "negative". Obesity is obviously a problem...no one is denying that.

Anywho, our children are also effected by this. I read this article today in the Houston Chronicle. To sum it up, basically, kids are completely out of shape by the time they get to 12th grade, and fewer than 10% were considered to be in shape. These out of shape kids turn out to be out of shape adults...Scary huh ...

Very true, but it's more pertinent to us the state of our own community.. Or at least to me...

Yeah... I started sharing meals when I go out. And you have to be careful when you order things on supposed "lite" menus, there have been tests on some restaurants where you think you are investing in a healthier meal and its really equally as bad. I have some links but my laptop is off...

I have tried to buy more organic stuff, milk, eggs, fruit, because the hormones and stuff they are putting in this stuff is killing us! Ever read the book Skinny Bitch, they talk about how bad cow milk is for you. To paraphrase her, cow milk is mean to take a 200 lb calf to 1300 lb cow in a short time. Do you really think that it won't make you gain weight? Even skim milk has high calories....

I tried Soy Milk - hated it!!!

And sodium! OMG!!!! Sodium makes you hold water weight and is so bad for you. And us black people love some salt! :smh::smh: We have to find alternatives. A salad isn't the only thing that's healthy, and people think Oh, if want to be healthy I gotta eat a salad... NO!!! Definitely other ways!!

All that was to say I enjoyed the vid, lol... great info.. I did think that being that it was spoken word he was going to say more than the obvious stuff, but it was still good none the less...

When I make the decision to indulge myself I make it worth my while. Meaning its not going to be sausage links or something like that. It will be a food I really like.

Your right about the 9-5 thing. It's killing people and what's worse is many people will sit at their desk and eat lunch so they never leave their workstations until time to go home.

Poor eating habits and no exercise is killing us.
