Hell no!

I swear you niggas have no idea what cooning is. Only on bgol is the term so grossly misunderstood.

Martin was an African American show that got its ratings from African Americans. Cracking jokes on a friend isn't cooning, Tommy was successful although we have no idea what he did, and every one has a dumb friend like Cole.

Stop it!

Re: If Martin came out today rather than the early 90s would heads say it was cooning

Kind of an unfair question. The era in which these shows came have a huge influence on how they were executed. If it came out today, b/c of events and things that have happened since that time, it would probably be a different show entirely.

Just like Good Times, the Jeffersons, Sanford & Son, etc. They all are what they are b/c of the era from which they came. Some of those shows don't connect w/ me as much b/c they were slightly before my time but I realize that people at the time got it b/c of what was going on back then. You just have to leave it there and let it stand for what it was.

Yup

You can't divorce a show from the time that it came out in. As far as the over the top acting and dressing in drag and things along those lines those have always been a part of sitcoms/comedy. I haven't heard anybody say that Rickey Smiley or Kevin Hart are cooning so I don't see why Martin would get that rap today. Tyler Perry has built an empire off dressing in drag and overacting in recent years and Martin just came out with another Big Momma movie last year. Obviously it would have to change for the times, and wouldn't be on either of the big 4 networks but I could see Martin being successful today. I still watch the reruns, that I have seen countless times, regularly.

Re: If Martin came out today rather than the early 90s would heads say it was cooning

No.

The show was/still funny. There was nothing "slick" about it back then (I could give a damn about the writing or storylines).. it was a simple show, with great humor and lots of physical comedy. We all know those same types of characters in our own lives.

Some people on here spend too much time trying to break down the most mundane things. Just enjoy the got damn show. If it's not your cup of tea, then that's cool too.

:smh:

Tommy worked at the black building with no windows across from the old white building with no windows he used to work at. You don't remember when Martin picked him up from work?

Re: If Martin came out today rather than the early 90s would heads say it was cooning

Martin took many of his ideas from the great shows....

like The Jeffersons and Sanford and Son......

Re: If Martin came out today rather than the early 90s would heads say it was cooning

I was workng with this guy back when the show was still in it's prime and he was telling me how stupid and corny the show was. This guy was black but he was from the suburbs and didn't understand the characters and a lot of the jokes. Martin was 1 of the funiest shows ever!

Re: If Martin came out today rather than the early 90s would heads say it was cooning

On this board, with some of these people, it would be called "cooning". Not by everyone but it would get that label.

So would "Sanford and Son", "The Jeffersons", and just about every Black sitcom ever. The "cooning" bar is very, very low here.

Re: If Martin came out today rather than the early 90s would heads say it was cooning

As funny as that show is sometimes, it's also cheesy and poorly written.

I don't think if it was introduced as a new show today it would have nearly the impact that it did in the 90's.

u crazy

Re: If Martin came out today rather than the early 90s would heads say it was cooning

Yeah, it's clear to me that no one knows what da term "coon" means or signifies concerning blacks. But y'all have at it. :smh:

Never liked the show, wasn't funny to me.

I never really found it to be funny like that either. Still don't. :dunno:

Lol, that episode when Tommy said that, I just watched it the other day.

The chemistry on the show was amazing. You could tell they really enjoyed working with each other.

Martin buffoonery transcends time. That shanaynay bull was stupid then and is stupid now.

Re: If Martin came out today rather than the early 90s would heads say it was cooning

I appreciate shows like Martin, Harvey, Living Single etc. You can't please everyone and so if ninjas ain't feeling it then thats on them :dunno:

Re: If Martin came out today rather than the early 90s would heads say it was cooning

Living Single, Steve Harvey Show, Wayans Bros., Jamie Foxx Show FTW.

Re: If Martin came out today rather than the early 90s would heads say it was cooning

a coon is a black person that sells out, disrespects or clowns himelf or his people for cac enjoyment.

sanford, george jefferson, martin

were nobodies coons.

Re: If Martin came out today rather than the early 90s would heads say it was cooning

It wasn't that good in the beginning. :hmm:

Yeah that whole situation fucked everything up. But Martin was no saint, either. He was fucking up in life and wildin' out like crazy. You could tell he was high during some episodes, especially in the last season. I wish the show ended better than it did, though.

Re: If Martin came out today rather than the early 90s would heads say it was cooning

Loved Martin then and still do. He had great timing and his cracks on Pam, Tommy and Cole were classic. I guess if you're a tight ass you might not get it.

Classic Martin episodes:

Hitman Hearns episode
The Nino Brown who stole my CD player
Forever SheNeNe
Player of the Year
Varnell Hill parts 1 and 2
Keith Washington episode
Prince Uchi
Pretty Ricky episode
Miss Bozack with Kenya Moore
Lost Pistons tickets when Gina had to work at SheNeNe's
Cheating on the DMV test
The riding with Stan and Myra in the hearst limo episode
The Monica Heard with Kim Fields episode
Gina head stuck in the headboard
Biggie Smalls episode
Martie Mart's Meatloaf and Waffles
Talent show episode
The episode with Beverly Johnson as his ex teacher
Gina and Pam try to join the social club

I think the Improv was 1 of the things that made the show funny. Chris Tucker said when they did the movie Friday most of the lines were just coming off the top of their heads and I think that made the movie funnier. If you look at the episode where Martin thought someone stole his new CD player and they were sitting around the table like wesley snipes on New Jack City and he had that stuffed dog you can see Tommy trying not to laugh throughout the whole scene.

Re: If Martin came out today rather than the early 90s would heads say it was cooning

The fucking militants won't be happy unless every black comedy is done like the show 'Frazier'.

Re: If Martin came out today rather than the early 90s would heads say it was cooning

I will never call another black show or person on TV a "COON" or practicing "COONERY" again:

duck-dynasty.jpg

(new show on MTV about west virginia rednecks called BUCKWILD)

duck dynasty's aight though...... but i can only take one redneck show at a time!!!!!!

Re: If Martin came out today rather than the early 90s would heads say it was cooning

Are there currently any minority based shows on the top networks at all these days?

Re: If Martin came out today rather than the early 90s would heads say it was cooning

i loved the show, but to answer your question...long as someone isn't from the south or based in the south, their coonery gets a pass from bgol's non home or car owning ngz not in south.

Re: If Martin came out today rather than the early 90s would heads say it was cooning

You don't have to agree. I think it had a cheesiness to the humor that you can't deny.
