She isn't even in my top 50 let alone being a close second to Aretha.
You're on an island.
She already is close to Aretha (if anyone can be), whether you personally like it or not.

Even her "status" as being the greatest is a matter of opinion. It all depends on what criteria one uses to determine greatness. Vocally, there are a number of gospel singers who could give Aretha a run for her money...then again there are some old schoolers who dig Chaka above Aretha. All any of us, you or I included, are doing is giving our various perspectives. Not really. If someone said they couldn't stand Aretha what use would that be? Her status is indisputable, even if some people may not get it.
Not a bad argument at all, actually. I maintain that great P.R., an overall decline in quality songwriting and artistry combined with a changing music industry in which radio D.J.'s and listeners have less say in what gets played has a hand in the recent success of a number of popular artists...over actual superiority of skill or great songwriting. Her record sales and overwhelming success are exactly reflective of how people feel about the "quality of her performance and vocals."
You're own personal taste is irrelevant. We're talking about her STATUS as this generation's Aretha (in terms of being the top R&B diva), and she certainly is. 44 R&B hits and 8 Platinum albums (to go with 9 Grammys) says so.
She's not a "pop" singer per se, so you typically have to listen to black radio to hear the majority of her singles (though she does have 6 "pop" Top Tens and a #1).
Well put. C/SI would argue that my personal view is relevant.
Consensus view is an amalgam of all the individual views. It's just that in terms of numbers, mine is obviously in a minority.
I also interpreted the OP's question in terms of the art of music and personal preference as opposed to popularity, because popularity of an artist can be quantified in terms of units sold and therefore is not something that can be debated per se!!
Mary J. Blige has no problem selling albums (and certainly has no need for any help from LOSERS like Brown and K-Ci). She's sold 18M of them. All have gone Platinum (with 6 of 8 going multi-Platinum).
She's doing just fine with her singles as well, even if she turned down "Umbrella" (which was actually written for Britney Spears).
C/SMary can't hold Aretha's left titty, much less a spot on the greatest female vocalist list.
OK, her biggest knock is the occasional cracks in her voice.
But as she works on that, there are few that can bring down a house like her.
The difference with her is the drama she exudes through her music.
Where would you rate her?

WTF??? She's far exceeded it!!! Although not on Aretha's level (no one is!!!), she's still the most noteworthy, consistently-dominant R&B female of the last 20 years ... and immensely successful. And she hasn't even hit 40 yet.

AS A HUGE MARY FAN, MARY DEFINATELY HAS STAYING POWER........I've always thought Blige was very overrated.
How In Theeeee Hell You Gonna Put Mary In The Same Category As Aretha? Helll....whitney Houston, Mariah Carey Come Before Mary...negro Please.............don't Let Go Back And Get The Blues And Gospel Singers.
Rachelle Ferrell!!
Whitney and Mariah are POP singers. Blige is one of the few true R&B belters out there connecting with an audience. Amazing success for someone who doesn't try to be COMMERCIAL (i.e., "white").

that chic has never moved me....
except maybe to put my hands over my ears

Mary is not even close to Tina Marie! Not even in the top 40

Rachelle Ferrell!!

I was thinking the same thing.....her voice is a freak of nature....come on. 6 Octives!!!
Mary J makes a lot of good music and lends herself to be in that position. But so does Beyonce' and Beyonce' is excellent Technically. Mary J is more popular than great....but i won't deny she is good and she is long lasting but not great.
7 1/2 octives.

Mary is not even close to Tina Marie! Not even in the top 40
Throw in Mary Wells, Martha Reeves, Patti Labelle, Cece Winans, Lisa Fischer, even Jill Scott, etc and she ain't top 50.
