OK, her biggest knock is the occasional cracks in her voice.

But as she works on that, there are few that can bring down a house like her.

The difference with her is the drama she exudes through her music.

Where would you rate her?

all of this is subjective, but on paper mariah carey is the greatest female solo artist of all time.

There are a boatload of singers that come after Aretha but before Mary, vocally. Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight, Phyllis Hyman, Stephanie Mills, Whitney Houston, Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott and India Aire immediately come to mind...

Is that in terms of money? Plus she no where near the best SOUL artist, which is what we're discussing here.

WTF??? Aretha is arguably the greatest singer of the rock era, PERIOD. Mary has done just fine, but she's not really close in terms of talent, impact or success. Check back in 20 years.

That's why I said when it's over.

Mary smokes more than half these broads.

Aretha Is The Greatest FEMALE Singer To Pick Up A Mic. She Was Voted The Greatest Singer To Pick Up A Mic By Rolling Stone Mag. She Paved The Way For Mary J. Mary Is Nowhere Near A Close Second.

add Regina Belle, Patti LaBelle and many others. Mary might make the top 100.

Chaka Kahn fell off a bit but I always felt that she was the best singer technically, but Aretha is usually considered better and has a far better body of work.

...but you're right, Mary never really lived up to her potential.

WTF??? She's far exceeded it!!! Although not on Aretha's level (no one is!!!), she's still the most noteworthy, consistently-dominant R&B female of the last 20 years ... and immensely successful. And she hasn't even hit 40 yet.

I've only bought Mary's albums - I always wanted her to win. I have mad respect for the others and I see too many legends that came after Aretha. Mary has Alicia, Fantasia and Keyshia as a followup and they are doing a damn good job with songs that Mary should have bought and rocked years ago. Mary better get with Dream and Neyo for a couple crossover hits then load that album with the old Mary J. Possibly send K-Ci and Bobby Brown over to bring back those "No more Drama" days.

Mary J. Blige has no problem selling albums (and certainly has no need for any help from LOSERS like Brown and K-Ci). She's sold 18M of them. All have gone Platinum (with 6 of 8 going multi-Platinum).

She's doing just fine with her singles as well, even if she turned down "Umbrella" (which was actually written for Britney Spears).

Mary was something special when she dropped "Whats the 411". She was fresh and new. I honestly haven't been able to feel anything that she has done since her 2nd CD. Her songs just ain't something that me as a man can sit back and listen to. That's why people like Gladys and Chaka come before Mary.

I understand where you're coming from bro, but you should never compare new school to old. It just doesn't work, cuz that old head is always gonna be considered a pioneer. Mary doesn't have the range of most of the great female artists, but after it's all said and done, she will have a better greatest hits collection than all except Mariah. I'm not talking by pop standards either, just good songs that ou know, and will sing whenever it comes on.

She's not even the best on that stage, much less anywhere else!!!

They are in different categories Aretha's voice carries her just over Gladys, Whitney, Roberta Flack, Patte LaBelle and Chaka Kahn. Mary doesn't have the voice to hang with those ladies. As far as music that has impacted the community, Mary is right up there with those and is probably higher than Chaka, and Roberta.

So why is she so popular (especially with black audiences)?

I haven't undertaken that study, so I can't answer.
But while I think she's good singer and has done a hat full of songs that I like, there are scores of female artist I would pick above her.
I can't even remember the last time I played a Mary J Blige cd.

You're own personal taste is irrelevant. We're talking about her STATUS as this generation's Aretha (in terms of being the top R&B diva), and she certainly is. 44 R&B hits and 8 Platinum albums (to go with 9 Grammys) says so.

She's not a "pop" singer per se, so you typically have to listen to black radio to hear the majority of her singles (though she does have 6 "pop" Top Tens and a #1).

Personal taste is all this thread is about. The O.P. made no specification as to record sales. He did, however, speak of quality of performance and vocals.

Not really. If someone said they couldn't stand Aretha what use would that be? Her status is indisputable, even if some people may not get it.

Her record sales and overwhelming success are exactly reflective of how people feel about the "quality of her performance and vocals."

Nah

She isn't even in my top 50 let alone being a close second to Aretha.
