Idris Elba on Green Lantern Role: “I Like This Idea”

Idris Elba, who has made no secret of his desire to play James Bond and who most recently appeared onscreen as Heimdall in Thor: The Dark World, likes the idea of taking on the role of John Stewart, one of DC Comics’s best-known Green Lanterns.

The Pacific Rim star said as much on Twitter today, after a fan prompted him with a fake movie poster for Green Lantern, featuring Elba and the tagline “Rebirth,” ironically a reference to the best-selling Green Lantern: Rebirth story that restored Hal Jordan to the series lead after a decade or so of Kyle Rayner and John Stewart being DC’s picks for Green Lantern.

Elba has been a fan-favorite for the role of John Stewart for some time now, and there has always been an idea that, since he’s one of the highest-profile DC characters of color, Stewart would be the go-to Green Lantern should the company elect to introduce a new GL in a Justice League film instead of his own solo movie.

At one point, hip-hop artist Common was attached to star in the shelved Justice League: Mortal movie from Mad Max director George Miller.

He is Heimdall in Marvel so I don't see them changing that and giving him another role.

But him as John Stewart would work, he'd just have to shave the beard and put a couple years back on.

I didn't hate the GL film. It wasn't great, but it wasn't complete garbage. If they kept it more serious, it would have been way better.

You said "its been done" in regards to an actor playing more than one character. Marvel will not have Elba play more than one character in their Cinematic Universe. Your example of Evans was a bad example.

Hell, Elba already was in Ghost Rider 2, a non Disney Marvel film.

That didn't indicate any referral to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Nobody I quoted said the "Marvel Cinematic Universe".

Dave and playahaitian said, "Marvel". That would most likely indicate the various franchises under Marvel Entertainment. That's how I took it.

I like Idris as john Stewert. He fits the role also t=not bad for BP but someone younger and a background in martial arts would be a better casting.

As for Idris playing Bond 007. I don't have a problem and it would be good for the franchise "in a perfect world". They should just use Idris as an MI6 agent and give him his on movie. That will keep cac's happy.
