Legendary rapper-turned-actor Ice Cube and producer DJ Pooh announced today the launch of what they are calling the world’s first real-time streaming television network online, UVNTV.com (U View Network Television).
UVNTV will use Microsoft Corps’s Silverlight 1.0 platform, a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for delivering richer user experiences on the Web. In addition to real-time transmission, UVNTV’s channels are capable of full screen DVD quality resolution, Dolby surround sound, and come complete with a video window channel guide.
“We are thrilled to work with Ice Cube and DJ Pooh, both whom have proven track records and have been at the forefront in music, film and television,” said John Case, general manager, Developer Division, Microsoft Corp. “We see UNVTV as a leading example of the changing landscape of how consumers experience entertainment, and how the industry is seeking new interactive platforms to better reach their target audiences. By using Silverlight, UVNTV will have the capabilities needed to take the user experience to another level.”
Among the UVNTV offerings will be a user generated channel, Snoop Dogg’s Snoopadelic TV, fashion designer Christian Audigier’s Live TV, and even Ice Cube’s own Hip Hop 24/7 TV.
UVNTV is also a Broadband Social Network. Members join free and are provided a profile page to showcase their talents, collaborate, or to simply meet like-minded fans or professionals. Every member is encouraged to pitch show ideas, audition for productions, and shape the future of UVNTV. UVNTV tracks all user data, however, providing channel operators and advertisers a host of valuable information ranging from who is watching, what they are watching, where they are watching from, for how long they are watching, and even how they rate shows.
Viral in nature, UVNTV provides members with the ability to bookmark channels and shows, or even invite or send links to friends. UVNTV also provides Channel Widgets.
