I wish rapping was like singing...You immediatley know when your not good at it.

I sometimes buy people cds when they approach me but I usually tell them to let me listen to some of it first. And I sure as hell aint paying $10 for a basic blank cd with the name written on it in a fucking Sharpie. At least have a decent cover. ​
 
Tips:
1. Don't look like you are about to rob me
2. Compose an elevator pitch (or shorter) Stop mumbling & using all that slang shit. Save that for the CD
3. Learn Photoshop or find somebody willing to hookup some acceptable artwork... find out who has affordable color copies and get your copy on. Make your product presentable!
4. Make yourself presentable. Or better yet, get some hot or halfway descent broads to hawk your wares for you. I'll bet you rap about how you a mack and get mad pussy. Use some of those skills to get broads to sell your shit.
5. Step it up hotter. A million other wack niggas besides you are trying to pump their CD's. Why don't you shoot and edit some video and include a DVD for FREE! along with your CD. People want value. Very few people in these economic times give a flying fuck about supporting you for the sake of support. People want value for their dollar!
6. Print up some advertising collateral. WTF is that? Business cards, post cards or quarter page flyers, one sheets, stickers, posters, t-shirts etc. Even if someone doesn't buy right away, leave them with some type of marketing material.
7. Get social. You're probably already on FB. Well stop bullshitting and get to marketing yourself. Not just to your grandmother and aunts. Get a twitter, FB exclusively for your music, SoundCloud, etc... Of course you have a phone with net access... No? Stop wasting money on weed and get one. Use that shit to update your social networks and drop songs, snippets, videos etc. Work your shit!
8. Invest in yourself. If you believe your shit is really hot, put your money where your mouth is. Get a 100 pack of discs, maybe 200... fuck it they're cheap. Package up a promo disc to GIVE AWAY FOR FREE!!! Get a name for yourself. Get a buzz going.

I'm just saying, if it was me I'd work that shit. Not just run up on niggas like I expect something for nothing. I know niggas on TV make it look easy, but there's an entire machine at work that makes that money happen. Even Weezy & Jay have to work at it. They can get over on their name for a while, but they have to work the machine to get sales.

Dude is at the mall or wherever tryna get people to buy his cd. Looks desperate and cliche. last thing u wanna look is desperate. Use the fucking internet!!! its free, u dont have to pay to get anything pressed up, etc...

If u make good music, and u let a group of friends hear it, if its good they will spread the word, and u can build a lil local buzz and get things rolling from there. if its not good then it wont catch on and people wont talk, back to the drawing board

It's 5 dollars tho', you either got the five or you don't. Good speech tho' but dude can give his stuff away on Youtube if it's really about exposure - CDs cost money and if he blows up 1) he has a "sold out the trunk of my car" story 2) several fans have a "I was up on dude when he was flea market hustling" story. It's 90 degrees outside just pay the five.
 

First off, everybody and there mother is tryna rap, so selling it is the worst thing you can possibly do. If anything, dude should have gave out the cd's for free, and had 1-3 songs on it, because quality is better than quantity. If he was hot, people would come back, or go to his music page, etc....A shame these young dudes dont take the time to learn to approach like a business, because it actually is..:smh:

Tried to explain to you some young cats at Lenox Mall, give it to me free and if it's really good it could BE MORE VALUABLE THAN THE $5/$10 I could give you. Explained that I know a few people with independent labels and ties to major labels and other industry people, but they weren't trying to hear it. Oh well. It's usually always trash.

A recent story that happened about a month ago. I was at a mall in Atlanta and 2 chicks came up to me saying they were a GOSPEL rap group from Maryland trying to get their music out. I didn't buy it (there's no market for gospel rap) but gave them $5 for a donation. 1 hour later I see these little whores at Atlantic Station in the shortest of booty shorts all up on some dudes face. I could only laugh because I feel for the hustle. CDs were probably blank

Agreed. There are some cat's who really want their music to be heard and they not gonna have a problem letting you listen to some of it prior to purchase. What the OP described is no different than the cat who has the squeegee and a bucket of dirty water at the traffic intersection. Dude is basically beggin, but is using the cover of providing some completely unnecessary service or product to guilt trip you into giving up some $.

The lecture was probably over the top, but I agree with the sentiment behind it.

The vast majority of all this music is garbage.

I actually had a cat hand me two CD's in Lenox earlier this winter and they were better than sh!t I paid for. I bumped his sh!t all summer.

Just depends. Most of them are coffee table coasters.

True story. My boy is probably one of the best rappers never discovered. Never asked me to buy an album ever. Send me to his myspace or facebook and just ask me to listen. I in turn would tell friends.:dunno:
 
Not too mention slim probably paid 10.00 for a spindle of 100 blanks, and you selling them shits for 10 a piece, that's a fucking 90% mark up- and who gets beat if that shit is trash: the consumer

I swear, these dudes have zero motivation to pay the dues in order to get on, and some of them might actually be nice
