I was sunk by Obama: Weprin

Democrat David Weprin said yesterday that President Obama’s sagging popularity among Queens and Brooklyn voters cost him the election for ex-Rep. Anthony Weiner’s congressional seat.

In a stunning upset, Weprin was trounced by Republican Bob Turner, whose campaign had tied him to the president.

“The message of the campaign was ‘Send Obama a message,’ ” said Weprin, a Queens state assemblyman. “I think the problem was that he’s the president and people are frustrated, and it’s just natural to take it out on the top guy -- or the top guy’s party.

“As much as I tried to make it about David Weprin or Bob Turner, I don’t think that resonated to voters. I think that voters looked at it as a referendum on the president,’’ Weprin said.

Democrats outnumber Republicans 3 to 1 in the district.

During one press conference, Weprin refused to say whether he backed Obama’s re-election. In fact, he did not mention the president in his literature, nor did he seek Obama’s endorsement.

And Weprin criticized the president’s policies toward Israel.

But while Obama was an albatross for Weprin, political experts said other factors contributed to the Democrat’s loss -- including the widely shared view that he was a lackluster candidate whose campaign committed strategic blunders.

Meanwhile, Orthodox Jews and other conservative voters pulled the lever for Turner in large numbers to protest Weprin’s vote for gay marriage. Weprin himself is an Orthodox Jew

He was a boring candidate that could not benefit by the GOP congress having an approval rating in the teens ?

Just like in most cases the CACs want to blame the nigga.

Some have even said the real reason Obama was elected is so they could blame him for what Bush did but then they saw he saved us from a depression so then the obstruction started in full force.

Dude is a joke. He is a jew that couldn't even get the jew vote in a heavily jew area

Do you believe what you described above to be true?

I don't believe that is why or how he was elected.

I do believe they will try and use circumstances to invalidate the legitimacy of a black man as president.

They have also already been blaming the fuck ups of Bush on Obama. I even heard one person say that Obama would have to have a hell of a turn around to get the economy back to where Bush left it.

Another Democrat who just assumed he would win and half-assed it and lost, so of course it's Obama's fault.

He was also pro gay marriage

pro Muslim mosque at twin towers site

weak on Israel

in a conservative district that has a substantial orthodox Jewish population

It was also a election that had very little money spent in it in comparison to the GOP candidate.

It is also a district that will be eliminated in a year.

But to say it was a democratic stronghold that was lost is way more sexy for those who are trying to convince the democratic electorate that all hope is lost and they should not even both voting in 2012.

It's amazing how many people fail to see the reverse psychology strategy that is employed by the GOP in addition to the voter suppression, misinformation, fear tactics and hate based rhetoric.

I wonder what the actual voter turnout percentage was?

and this seems, again rather weak, and shows how disjointed democrats are

republicans never turn coat like this

60k in the special election
110k in 2008

NY 9th District Special Election 2011
David Weprin (D)
Popular vote 27,669 (46%)
Bob Turner (R)
Popular vote 32,446 (54%)

Total turnout: 60,115

NY 9th District Election 2010
Anthony D. Weiner (D)
Popular vote 67,011 (60.8%)
Robert L. Turner (R)
Popular vote 43,129 (39.2 %)

Total turnout: 110,140

The Democrat turnout for the "special election" was down nearly 60%
from the prior election. Even if you suppose 10,000 converts to
Republican**s who happened to show for the Republican candidate,
numbers still heavily favor the Democrat in a "normal election." So,
bascially, it is safe to conclude that the Republican will hold this
seat until the next "normal election" in 2012, or roughly 1 year.”
