SMITHFIELD, N.C. (AP) - Former NBA player Charles Shackleford was arrested on drug and weapon charges during a routine traffic stop.

The 39-year-old Shackleford, who played at North Carolina State and with four NBA teams in six seasons, was arrested in Johnston County on Saturday by a North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper.
He faces charges of carrying a concealed weapon, misdemeanor possession of marijuana and possession of cocaine, Johnston County officials said Sunday. Shackleford, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., was released on $11,000 bond.

Andrea Spencer, 19, who was driving the vehicle, was arrested for speeding.

Shackleford is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday in Johnston County. Spencer, who was released on a $500 bond, is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 13.

Shackleford was suspended from N.C. State in 1986 because of poor grades, but was allowed to return. He was drafted in the second round in 1988 by the New Jersey Nets and later played with the Philadelphia 76ers and Minnesota Timberwolves and before ending his NBA career with the Charlotte Hornets after the 1989-99 season.

Damn, too bad there wasn't a GM like Isiah Thomas around back then,
Shack would most definitely have gotten a better shot to play. Remember
when he was with NJ, always thought he got a raw deal. I think Fitch
was the coach at the time....

When something goes up...something else must go down. While the NBA
was giving free rides to 7 foot euro scrubs like Sabonis and Divac, they
left brothas like Shack and Walter Berry by the wayside to rot in hell

So you saw as big dudes like Washburn and A.C. Earl was ommitted
from NBA rosters while BUMS like Mark Eaton were guaranteed roster
spots so the NBA could appeal to European countries

Excellent Point Here RS... I've never understood how a big man could have a reasonable amount of success in college....then in the space of a few months completely forget how to play.

Talent is only a part of what is takes to stay and play in professional sports. Players have to be willing to be coached, willing to put aside their egos for the good of the team, and be able to handle all the pressure and distractions that the fame and the money of the NBA brings.

I've seen so many huge college basketball stars burn out so quickly in the NBA; both white and black.

In college, the coaches recruit players that will fit into their system. At the professional level, it is the players that must adjust. Some just can't.
