I Need A More Powerful Router. Any Suggestions??

Re: I Need A More Pwerful Router. Any Suggestions??

The reason why I like the Airport extreme is you can setup a private network (secure) and a public network with its own network ID for guests when they visit and you dont have to give them your wireless password.

Does anyone know if there is another non-Apple (less expensive) router that does this?

My Dlink has that option.

One. Turn off 802.11b if you don't need it for any of your devices. It's one of the biggest killers of a wireless signal for 802.11g/n devices.

Two. Change DEFAULT RATE from Auto/Default to the highest possible without connection loss for devices farthest away from your AP.

Three. I assume that you're on Windows. Download Inssider and monitor wireless signal from neighbors that enter your house. If everyone's AP is on channel 6 (default for most routers), set yours to channel 1 or 11.

Four. Replacing your router most likely isn't going to solve your problem. You're going to have to either:

- redirect your antennas (it can make a big difference since they're omni directional)
- move your router to another part of your house
- mod your router with higher gain antennas (get ready to break out the soldering gun and plastic epoxy for your particular model)
- setup repeater APs to extend wireless signal for devices that have problems connecting

Five. CHANGE YOUR FIRMWARE to one of the open source ones (OpenWRT/DD-WRT/Tomato)! Frankly, most manufacturer's firmware for residential grade equipment sucks.

Good shit right here but be careful with firmware changes. You could brick your router if you don't know what you're doing.

Re: I Need A More Pwerful Router. Any Suggestions??

You need to buy a router that will run DD-WRT or Tomato. This will turn your $100 router in a $600 router. But a switch would be the first step.

fried my wrt54g tryin this shit.

Thanks for the advice. Read the reviews on Dell.com http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/...e_bnrank=0&baynote_irrank=0&~ck=baynoteSearch and it seems to be a pretty solid router. Just copped it this morning. Getting rid of my old linksys wireless g router..

So the router arrived yesterday and I installed it. Man what a difference in internet speed. much much faster and Much better than my old linksys. Thanks for the advice.

Wish that would work with my router.

Netgear WNR854T ? not possible no

Re: I Need A More Pwerful Router. Any Suggestions??

get a netgear or belkin wireless n router, make sure your laptop or desktop has a wireless n card first though

Netgear and Belkin are two of the worst. As others stated the D-Link Dir-655 and 855 are great (I've had a 655 for almost 4 years trouble free) But anyways, both netgear and belkin tend to either have crappy options, like not being able to setup a separate network for machines you don't trust, or limited port forwarding options, or they have weak processors which make them inappropriate for torrent use.

I don't need a router but might be looking into an upgrade from my Netgear wnr854t that I got for 20 from Tiger.

This router has a usb port for an external hard drive.

Yes it does. I'm using the USB port for my printer on mine.

I just copped the E3000 four months ago (if that) and couldn't be happier (well, besides the fact the first one they sent me was DOA with a hardware issue and it took them a week to send me another)

I have a D-Link DIR-655 802.11b/g/n Xtreme N Gigabit Wireless Router Ive had it for 2 years and it worked great. I moved to Japan and it doesnt work well with the Japanese internet service. It blocked random websites. So I just purchased a Linksys E3000, I hope this works alot better. I will give a review once I receive it.

Chase I had the same problem, this may or may not work for you but I do not think there is a problem with your router. It is possible that you just have to lower the MTU on your router and it took me a long time to figure this out until the light bulb came on. I don't have that particular router you have but you will have to find a setting somewhere inside your DLink menu that allows you to lower the Max Transmission Unit (MTU) of the router.

The websites are not being blocked, it's just all your packets are being fragmented and some webservers are not responding to you with webpages. I believe the routers sold for the U.S. come preset with MTU=1500 or MTU=1492 so you will have to lower your router to MTU=1492 or MTU=1472 or lower until your packets are no longer fragmented.

you can test whether or not there is a packet fragmentation problem with the following command line:
Code:
 ping -f -l 1500 www.[anywebsiteofyourchoice].com
(That is a dash lower case "L," not a dash "1." Also note the spaces in between the sections.)

Press Enter.

Then reduce that 1500 by 10 until you no longer get the "packet needs to be fragmented" error message. Then increase by 1 until you are 1 less away from getting the "packet need to be fragmented" message again. Add 28 more to this, and this is your MaxMTU. .. you should come out somewhere around 1492 or 1472 should work for you. I have my MTU set at 1454 and my packets are no longer fragmented so websites load pages normally. Anyway whatever number you come up with, using the command line above, with no "packet needs to be fragmented" error message will be the magic number to plug into your router for MTU setting.

I have never had a DLink router so I have no idea what your DLink setup menu looks like, but MTU setting should be in there somewhere. Your manual is here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/2090673/DIR655-manual-11 and your MTU setting is on page 'Section 3 - Configuration'.

If this doesn't work for you then you have nothing to lose by trying it, its worth a try, and you also have another router on the way. good luck
