Calle 13 - Residente O Visitante

From www.okayplayer.com:

Calle 13 will change your mind about reggaeton and Latin hip-hop. The Puerto Rican duo of emcee Residente and producer Visitante throw out all conventions of urban Latin music on their sophomore release. While establishing a large following with their danceable, reggaeton-tinged self-titled debut, Residente o Visitante finds the group adopting the musical styling of many Latin American nations, and adding their distinct hip-hop flavor accented by Residente’s unique voice and flow. The result is one of the best Latin hip-hop albums recorded, punctuated by excellent and eclectic production, and some of the raunchiest and most comical lyrics put to recorded media.

Residente o Visitante is a tour of Latin America through the eyes of two demented hip-hop heads. “Tango De Pecado” employs the typical orchestral backing of an Argentine tango, paired with Residente’s tongue-in-cheek tales of Satanism and sin, demanding listeners to dance atop volcanic lava. “La Cumbia de Los Aburridos” satirizes club wallflowers and party-poopers with the accordion and brass of typically Colombian cumbia music. The tour continues with the Mexican-influenced, tuba-heavy “La Fokin’ Moda,” and the Brazilian samba-flavored “Un Beso De Desayuno.” The latter may be Calle 13’s first quasi-sincere love song, but often employs Dali-esque levels of surrealism in its storytelling.

Although Residente’s nonsensical and sexually-explicit lyrics are often overshadowed by Visitante’s picturesque melodies, Residente is unafraid to remind us of his hip-hop roots and political undertones. “Sin Exagerar” pairs the duo with Puerto Rico’s best rapper, Tego Calderon, for a funky and danceable display of their lyrical skills. Calle 13 pays tribute to their birthplace on “La Crema,” a horn-driven head-nodder. The shining moment, though, is “Pal Norte.” On the track, the duo team with Cuban hip-hop trio Orishas for a fiery guitar-based tirade on the issues of Latin American immigration.

Although it’s easy for Calle 13 to be grouped into the same musical categories as Daddy Yankee, the duo actually belongs in a much smaller and more elite category. Along with artists like Tego Calderon, Orishas, and Ozomatli, Calle 13 are amongst the few actually pushing the boundaries of Latin music, blending the best of hip-hop with the music and spirit of hundreds of years of Latin culture.

Fantastic funky grooves from the always on-target Jazzman vinyl 45s label. Don't take the "yet another" in the title as any lack of quality; this set's a great batch of super-rare groovers, put together with an incredible array of styles. The set compiles a dozen singles issued on the label over the past few years. Older tracks reissued properly, and presented here.

01 That's What Friends Are For - Madeline Bell
02 I Can't Keep from Crying Sometimes - The Dierdre Wilson Tabac

Detroit Soul: Real Soul Music From The Motor City

Detroit Soul is firmly back on the map. Years after Motown, years after Techno, the motor city is humming again with some of the best underground soul in the US. This excellent set does a great job of pulling together the rich range of current work from Detroit. Moving slightly past hip hop and dancefloor, tracks to go for the mellower, more neo soulful work. The sound of the set is wonderful, chilled out, not in a lazy way, but with a soulful vibe that takes us back to the days of Stevie and Syreeta. 11 cuts on 2LPs now available here.

One of the best funky comps on the Soul Patrol label, and it's got a totally great set of hard funky tracks -- of the deep funk variety that always gets a compilation moving! As usual, you probably won't find many of these on any other compilation -- and the set itself is a motherlode of hard drums, blaring horns, and rumbling funky basslines. Vocals and instrumentals mix it up in a very nice way -- and tracks include "Trespasser" by Bad Medicine, "Just Plain Funk" by James Polk, "Hung Up" by Salt, "Stay Together" by Soul Excitement, "Can You Handle It" by The Intensions, "Funky Penguin" by Dennis Lee & The Notables, "Can't Buy Soul" by Hebrew Rogers, and "Mr. Machine" by The Chefs!

Soul Sisters Collection

Funky female soul galore; a killer set of rare tunes that's one of the best sets of this type we've ever uploaded! The SuperFunk crew at BGP have gone through the rich array of labels handled by the company, pulling out some massive tunes that really push our understanding of female soul. Most of the tunes on the set are completely new to most ears, and there's a great mix of northern and southern funk styles that keeps things super-fresh. Drums crackle, basslines pound, and the gals belt it out loud, clear, and funky on a set of 20 amazing tracks.

http://rapidshare.com/files/30470141/Funk_soul_sisters_part_2.rar

This set's a brilliant follow-up to the first Funk Soul Sisters set on BGP. There's a depth here that goes way past the obvious; a love of bad-rapping funky female soul that digs deeper, and comes up with some key gems that explode cliches and really expand our love of the music. Titles include both rare album and single tracks pulled from a variety of American indies of the late 60s and early 70s, and although many are by familiar artists, they offer up a side of their talents you really wouldn't expect.

Probably the best in the series, a great amalgamation of Funk, Northern Soul and Rare Bar Groove. The soul sisters on this album sing from the heart and shoot from the hit. True masterpieces from heroines of R&B.

Kid Koala - Your Mom's Favorite DJ

Download Your Mom's Favorite DJ

NOW this is more like the Ninja release of days gone by – slick beats, some serious funk and a DJ who mixes the eccentric with the downright cool!

Kid Koala, aka Eric San, is one of the label’s most distinct and essential artists. Previous DJ masterclasses have included Scratchcratchratchatch, not to mention Scratch Happy Land and Some Of My Best Friends Are DJs.

His third album Your Mom’s Favourite DJ is a slick collection of romance, silent movie comedy and swing that your mother may well raise a smile at, woven together with classic hip-hop beats, breaks and general swathes of heavy guitars.

Occasionally, it contains a classic Motown feel, while at other times there’s nods to Northern Soul; ‘70s rock grooves trade places with cinematic interludes, while the various samples and cartoon flourishes merely add a unique glow that ensures the LP shines just as brightly as Kid Koala’s previous efforts.

What’s more, it draws on many of Eric’s own influences and his work as an illustrator, graphic artist, filmmaker, puppet master and musician.

Throughout, there are references to a book about a clarinet-playing mosquito that Eric is currently working on, plus to the musical puppet show he has in development.

And there are also some tests for a new group called Slew.

If that suggests Eric has become a little side-tracked, or is stretching his talent a tad too far, then don’t worry – the mix is seamless.

The beats are genuinely hip-shaking, the comedy as funny as hell and the breakdowns, mixing and turntabling as effortless and hip as they’ve always been.

So kick back or get your dancing shoes on and let Kid Koala seriously entertain you. This is 34 minutes of pure class that one wishes could only last longer!
