Sobbing testimony in trial for killing ‘violent’ cop husband

She said she had never fired a gun before.

But in just a matter of seconds, Queens mom Barbara Sheehan managed to pull the triggers on two guns 11 times, leaving her abusive, retired-cop husband dead on the bathroom floor.

“I knew he was positively going to kill me,” a sometimes-weeping Sheehan told a rapt Queens jury about her husband, Raymond, at her murder trial yesterday.

“He would always chase me and catch me. So I knew he would catch me. So I shot the gun. I don’t know how many times I shot. I just fired. I stopped firing when I didn’t feel threatened anymore. I grabbed the guns, closed the door and ran downstairs.”
UNHAPPIER TIMES: Barbara Sheehan testified yesterday that her husband, former Police Officer Raymond Sheehan, had severely beaten her on a previous vacation and that she was afraid to go away with him again.
UNHAPPIER TIMES: Barbara Sheehan testified yesterday that her husband, former Police Officer Raymond Sheehan, had severely beaten her on a previous vacation and that she was afraid to go away with him again.

For nearly 20 years, Sheehan insisted, she had suffered torrents of daily abuse, insults, threats and violence that left her with black eyes, a broken nose and a battered spirit.

“He’d hit me on my nose, in my eyes. I couldn’t physically fight him back. He was a lot bigger than me,’’ she said.

But the 50-year-old woman insisted that it wasn’t revenge that led her to shoot her husband on Feb. 18, 2008, as he was shaving in their Howard Beach home. It was survival.

According to Sheehan, she and her husband had viciously argued the night before his slaying.

He then picked up where they’d left off the next fateful day, she said, dragging her out of bed and down the stairs at 7 a.m., insisting she go with him on a trip to Florida.

Fearing she’d never make it back to New York alive -- since he had beaten her badly on their last getaway -- Sheehan continued to refuse to go on the trip, until he held a gun to her head, just another one of the many times he had used that method of persuasion, she said.

Sheehan testified that it was then that she realized she had to finally make a run for it.

After a short trip to a nearby friend’s house for moral support, Sheehan said, she returned home to get some cash she had stashed away, planning to leave Raymond once and for all.

“I just had to get away,” Sheehan testified. “I didn’t want him to hurt me or my kids.’’

But fearing the worst, she said, she grabbed one of her husband’s guns “thinking maybe he wouldn’t shoot me if I had the gun.”

Raymond quickly emerged from the bathroom, another other gun in his hand, she claimed.

“He said he was going to kill me,” Sheehan said, breaking down in sobs. “So I shot the gun I had in my hand. He had the big gun, I had the little gun. I don’t know how many times I shot it. I couldn’t aim it. I just shot. I never shot a gun before.”

Sheehan said Raymond dropped his gun and slid down between the bathtub and the toilet, bloody and screaming and still threatening to kill her.

When he reached for his gun again, Sheehan said, she beat him to it and used it to finish the job.

“I didn’t intend to kill him,” she insisted. “I just wanted him to stop and not kill me.”

Before describing the shooting for the jury, Sheehan detailed the alleged abuse she had suffered at the hands of her husband, including the mental torture she was forced to endure watching him perform kinky sex acts while he pranced around in women’s clothes and adult diapers, she claimed.

“Our sexual relationship was never really good, but it was OK,” Sheehan admitted.

UNHAPPIER TIMES: Barbara Sheehan testified yesterday that her husband, former Police Officer Raymond Sheehan, had severely beaten her on a previous vacation and that she was afraid to go away with him again.

She said much of the physical abuse she suffered was witnessed by their two children, Jennifer, now 25, and Raymond Jr., now 21, who are both scheduled to testify for their mom.

She said Raymond flew off the handle for the most trivial of things -- their son’s dirty diaper when he was a baby, a home-cooked meal he didn’t like.

So controlling was her husband that he checked her shopping receipts for time stamps when she returned from the store to make sure she didn’t dally on her way back home.

“If I did, he’d hit me or curse me,” Sheehan said.

She claimed that her husband once threw boiling-hot marinara sauce on her because he wanted something else for dinner.

“I sought medical attention for it,” Sheehan said. “But I had to lie about what happened because he threatened to kill myself and my kids . . . He’d hold a gun to my head and said that if I went to the doctor and told them what happened, he’d kill me and the kids and go down in glory. I didn’t know how to deal with it.”

She said he would boast that his police experience would help him cover up the crime.

Sheehan said he carried at least two guns in the house all the time, in his waistband or on his ankle.

“While he was watching TV, [one] would be on the table,” Sheehan said.

“He’d take it to the bathroom, and while he was showering, he always had a gun on him.”

“I tried calling 911, and he’d beat me with the receiver,” a teary Sheehan went on. “He said, ‘I'm the police and they’d never believe you.’ ”

Raymond’s twin brother looked on shaking his head, as Sheehan testified.

For days, her supporters have been wearing purple to show their support for victims of domestic violence. Sheehan took the stand wearing a purple cashmere scarf.

On cross-examination, prosecutors called the spousal abuse “alleged,’’ and hammered home the idea that she had clearly “shot and killed’’ her husband -- repeating it to the point that her lawyer, Michael Dowd, objected, and the judge sided with the defense.

I hate to say this but sometimes I wished I heard more stories like this. I have no sympathy for abusive dudes. I don't feel sorry for the kids. They didn't lose a father, they lost a bitch.

DA cites vacations

Six months before a Queens woman blew away her allegedly abusive hubby in self-defense, she posed with him in a lovebird re-enactment of the classic Times Square V-J Day smooch during one their many vacations together, a prosecutor charged yesterday.

“So you lived in fear of your husband -- but you still got on a plane to go places with him?’’ an incredulous Queens Assistant District Attorney Debra Pomodore asked Barbara Sheehan, 50, a mom of two accused of gunning down her retired-cop husband, Raymond, in 2009.

“Yes,’’ Sheehan admitted from the stand in Queens Supreme Court.

In fact, the pair had jetted to enough destinations to fill a glossy travel magazine: Las Vegas, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, Disney World and, closer to home, Lake George and the Jersey Shore.

Sheehan testified that one trip -- in 2007 to Jamaica -- turned violent when her abusive husband smashed her head against a cinder-block wall.

But “even after you were fearful to go anywhere with your husband after Jamaica, you still went places with him. In fact, you went on several [more] vacations, did you not?” Pomodore asked.

“We did travel often,’’ Sheehan replied.

Asked if she was ever sexually attacked by her husband, the defendant admitted, “No, he never raped me.

“[But] he made me do things’’ that would be considered “abuse,’’ she said.

Still, Pomodore pointed out, a month after the couple’s allegedly rough Jamaica trip, they were again off traveling together, this time to San Diego, where they re-enacted the famous V-J Day photo in which a sailor kisses a nurse in the middle of Times Square to mark the end of World War II.

Raymond, who retired as a cop in 2002, helped pay for their jet-setting lifestyle by earning $120,000 a year from a full-time position with UBS Financial Services, in addition to his police pension.

Prosecutors said Sheehan executed her husband by shooting him 11 times with two guns while he was shaving in the bathroom of their Howard Beach home.

Sheehan says she shot him in self-defense after he threatened to kill her and pointed a gun at her during an argument over her refusal to go to Florida with him on yet another jaunt.

The prosecutor asked Sheehan if she suspected her husband was having an affair.

“I didn’t care that he wasn’t sleeping with me,” Sheehan told jurors. “If I could have found out he was having an affair, it was easier for me to get out of the marriage.”

Pomodore struck quickly.

“You’d leave if he was having an affair,” the prosecutor said, “but you wouldn’t leave if he were beating you?”

GAME. SET. MATCH.

Dude was still a bitch though.

Sheehan's daughter testifies, blasts theory that mom killed ex-cop husband for his money

The daughter of the Queens school secretary on trial for gunning down her ex-cop husband in a hail of bullets exploded at a prosecutor Friday for suggesting her mom did it for the cash.

"The money doesn't matter to anyone, don't you get that?" Jennifer Joyce shouted from the witness stand before breaking down in tears. "He was worth more alive than if he was dead."

Joyce angrily denied Barbara Sheehan's motive for killing her husband was the payout from more than $600,000 worth of life insurance policies he left behind.

After Raymond Sheehan's February 2008 slaying, Joyce, 25, and her brother gave their mother more than $300,000 to pay off a home equity loan and to cover other debts.

Barbara Sheehan, 50, admitted she fired 11 shots into her husband while he was shaving in their Howard Beach home, but only after he reached for a semiautomatic he kept on the sink. She says she killed him in self-defense following more than 18 years of beatings that began after the birth of their second child.

Assistant District Attorney Debra Pomodore tried to cast Joyce as an ungrateful daughter who enjoyed the trappings of a pampered childhood.

She showed Joyce pictures of her and her father together at a lavish Cinderella-themed "Sweet 16" held at Russo's On the Bay near their home. "Isn't it a fact that you came up from the floor wearing a tiara and a blue satin dress?" Pomodore wondered.

Joyce, a registered nurse, bridled at Pomodore's claim that her father bought her a car so she wouldn't have to take public transportation. "It didn't matter to me," Joyce insisted. "I'd rather walk to high school."

She denied despising her father, despite testifying that she witnessed him beating her mother from the time she was 4 years old.

The Queens woman acquitted in the fatal shooting of her abusive, cross-dressing, diaper-wearing, ex- cop husband says she withheld sex from him for a decade because he patronized transvestite prostitutes.

“I don’t know if there were actually affairs,” Barbara Sheehan told WPIX/Channel 11 News, in an interview airing tonight and tomorrow, about retired NYPD Sgt. Raymond Sheehan’s lust for men.

“I think it was more prostitution kind of stuff which happened randomly with different people, which as far as I was concerned is why the sex stopped in my life,” she said.

DARK SECRET: Barbara Sheehan (above) says she withheld sex for at least 10 years from her abusive husband, Raymond, whom she killed in self-defense.

“He would meet up with young people and he would dress like a woman, they would dress like a woman,” Sheehan said in her first interview since being released on $1 million bond Monday from Rikers Island, where she was awaiting sentencing for weapons possession in connection with her 2008 slaying of Raymond.

“There were no women,” she said.

“It’s been at least 10 years since we had any sex.

“He was into that, diapers, acting like a baby, or having someone else act like a baby,” Sheehan said when asked if Raymond had an infantilism fetish.

“He wanted me to watch him do things. He would do things to himself.”

Sheehan, 52, also told WPIX that “she wants to find love,” according to station spokeswoman Jessica Bellucci.

Sheehan also is taking college classes in preparation for becoming a social worker one day, and has plans to return to Rikers Island to mentor women inmates, Bellucci said.

Michael Dowd, Sheehan’s lawyer, had said in 2008 that Raymond’s intense “self-loathing” and “Irish sense of guilt” over his trysts with “she-males” apparently caused him to be even more violent with his wife.

That guilt “seemed to increase and send him into a rage,” said Dowd, who also claimed Raymond had sought the “comfort of transvestites” around New York state.

A jury acquitted Sheehan early this month of murder, buying her defense that she fatally shot Raymond 11 times with two guns after decades of abuse in fear that he was about to kill her. But she was convicted of weapons possession in the case.

Sheehan faces 3 1/2 to 15 years in prison when she is sentenced on Nov. 10 for felony weapons possession. She is appealing that conviction.

Because of the conviction, city Department of Education officials have moved to fire her as a secretary at IS 364 in Brooklyn, where she earned $50,000 annually.

Sheehan could regain that job with back pay if her appeal is successful.

Colleagues from her school testified during the murder trial that Sheehan several times showed up for work with bruises that she attempted to cover up in vain.

“She went into the ladies room and I followed her,” said school safety officer Valerie Levant during the trial.

“She took off the shades, and she had two black eyes.”

Barbara Sheehan, who was acquitted of murder after killing her husband with 11 gunshots, was sentenced today to five years in prison and two years probation on a weapons charge.

Sheehan was released on bail pending her appeal.

Her attorney, Michael Dowd, said he was appalled at the sentence.

"I've said a number of times that I was sorry for what happened to myself, my children and my husband," Sheehan said after the sentencing.

Sheehan has said she was forced to kill her cop husband in 2008 before he killed her. A Queens jury agreed with her last month.

But it found her guilty of criminal possession of a weapon for one of the two guns she used to blow away Raymond Sheehan.

The case had all the trappings of a Lifetime cable-TV movie: An ex-cop torments his wife for years, she and witnesses testify, pummeling her and threatening her constantly with loaded guns.

The fed-up wife finally decides to make a break for it, grabbing a gun and cash as she heads out the door. But there’s a final encounter. He points a gun at her.

He threatens to kill her. But she shoots him first, and keeps shooting.

He falls and drops his gun, but he’s still threatening to kill her, she says. She beats him to the other gun, a Glock semiautomatic, and finishes the job.
