hunting camp's racist name; Herman Cain calls it 'insensitive'

Texas Gov. Rick Perry's campaign is on the defensive, saying parts of a report about a Texas hunting camp he used - once known as 'N*****head" - had "incorrect" and "inconsistent" claims.

The damning front-page Washington Post article said in the early years of his political career, Perry hosted fellow lawmakers and supporters at the West Texas hunting camp his family rented. At the front of the gated entrance was a large flat rock that had the name "N*****head" painted across it in block letters.

The offensive name was eventually painted over. But just when and under what prompting, was unclear, the article stated.

"Perry's father painted over offensive language on a rock soon after leasing the 1,000-acre parcel in the early 1980s," Ray Sullivan, communication director for RickPerry.org, told Politico this morning.

"When Governor Perry was party to the hunting lease from 1997 to 2007, the property was described as northern pasture. He has not been to the property since 2006," Sullivan's statement said.

"A number of claims made in the story are incorrect, inconsistent, and anonymous, including the implication that Rick Perry brought groups to the lease when the word on the rock was still visible. The one consistent fact in the story is that the word on a rock was painted over and obscured many years ago," Sullivan's statement said.

"Governor Perry and his family never owned, controlled or managed the property referenced in the Washington Post story. The 42,000-acre ranch is owned by the Hendricks Home for Children, a West Texas charity," the Statement said.

The furor was already being picked up by Perry's opponents.

"My reaction is that is very insensitive," said GOP contender Herman Cain said on ABC's "This Week."

"Since Gov. Perry has been going there for years to hunt, I think that it shows a lack of sensitivity for a long time of not taking that word off that rock and renaming the place. It's just basically a case of insensitivity," Cain told "This Week's" Christiane Amanpour.

"It was painted over," Amanpour pointed out.

"Yes. It was painted over. But how long ago was it painted over? So I'm saying that it is a sign of insensitivity," said Cain whose latest tally in the Florida straw poll has the former businessman ahead of Perry.

Black conservatives crack me up. If Barack Obama had brought this up in a debate with Perry, Cain would have chided him on "playing the race card".

Contrite Cain Now Says Perry Sign "Doesn't Matter"

Just two days after arguing that Texas Gov. Rick Perry's leasing of a piece of land once referred to as "******head" showed a "lack of sensitivity," GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain is now saying that the issue "doesn't bother me at all."
"I really don't care about that word. They painted over it," he said, referring to a sign painted on a rock at the property the Texas Governor once leased. The Washington Post first reported Sunday that the slur appeared on the hunting grounds' gated entrance.
Cain added that he was "not playing the race card. I am not attacking Gov. Perry." What changed in the last 24 hours? Well for one thing, the conservative media made it profoundly clear to Cain that he had stepped out of line by the mere suggestion that a white Republican had acted inappropriately on an issue of race. In addition to conservative bloggers slamming Cain for "playing the race card," (accusations notably absent as Cain issued broad generalizations about black voters being "brainwashed" ) Rush Limbaugh issued a condemnation—more than sorrow than in anger of course. "I'm gonna tell you, this is really disappointing to me. Herman Cain. I liked Herman Cain—like Herman Cain," Limbaugh said. "There is certainly no substance to it, and there was no reason for Herman Cain to try to piggyback this." Doesn't Cain understand that his job is to protect white Republicans from accusations of racism, not amplify them?

How desperate is Cain to nip this in the bud? Today's Washington Post/ABC poll shows Cain tied with Perry for second place among Republicans nationally at 16 percent, with Romney, whom Cain endorsed last time around, leading the pack at 25 percent. Those numbers represent "a 13-point drop for Perry and a 12-point rise for Cain since early September." As Slate's Dave Weigel notes, Cain's criticism of Perry threatens to alienate the very white Republican voters whose support he's seeking by making him look like, in conservative blogger Glenn Reynolds' words, "just another black race-card-playing politician." See, before, they thought Cain was one of the good ones!

As for the "******head" sign, which Perry says was painted over shortly after his family leased the property—Limbaugh has an explanation for that. "I think Perry, back when this happened in the eighties, was a Democrat."

Mystery solved.

Limbaugh: How Dare Cain Find “******head” Offensive

After a story this weekend unturned the most famous rock in the recent history of presidential politics, some made a prediction which I hoped would prove incorrect: The person most at risk of harm from a racial controversy in the GOP race would prove to be Herman Cain. Cain has thrived in part by reassuring Republicans on race. The speech that won him the Florida CPAC straw poll passionately denied that there was any racial component to opposition to the Obama administration. But what would happen if Cain deviated from this script?

He deviated this Weekend. He said of the painted stone on the Perry Hunting tract: “Since Governor Perry has been going there for years to hunt, I think that it shows a lack of sensitivity for a long time of not taking that word off of that rock and renaming the place.”

The next day Rush Limbaugh took to the airwaves to blast Cain:
So here you have the Washington Post with an unsupported nonstory, and here comes Herman Cain piggybacking on it trying to capitalize on it, essentially letting the mainstream media (in this case, the Washington Post) set the narrative.
New York Magazine excerpted several tweets from conservatives declaring themselves “former Cain supporters”. Cain is “capitalizing”, looking to damage his competition through lazy accusations of racism. Not only that, but the oblivious Cain is allowing himself to become a stooge for the lamestream media!

I continue to hope that conservatives will develop greater awareness of how they sound outside the bubble. Here we have Herman Cain abruptly attacked by the Tea Party movement he himself had absolved of racism for describing a public display of the n-word on a candidate’s property as “insensitive”.

What else would one call it? Cain took the precaution to state that he was not judging Perry personally and that he reaction was condition on the story proving accurate.

Yet for this mild expression of a feeling universal to all Black people, we can tear up his ticket on the Tea Party Express. Yesterday Cain heard the chorus and walked back his remarks:
While speaking to reporters outside of a meeting with Donald Trump on Monday, Republican presidential contender Herman Cain dialed back his criticism of Rick Perry over his family’s use of a hunting camp named “******head.”

“I really don’t care about that word. They painted over it,” he said, referring to a sign painted on a rock at the property the Texas Governor once leased. The Washington Post first reported Sunday that the slur appeared on the hunting grounds’ gated entrance.
Move along folks, nothing to see here–and far be it from Herman Cain to suggest otherwise.

Re: Cain Backs Down From the Masses. Whose Brainwashed?

I think I said this would be the result.

In response to the "Brainwash" comment, I posted:

Cain's ONLY point is what might, at this particular time, benefit Cain. So, instead of trying to encourage black voters, seems to me, by using this "brainwashed" rhetoric, Cain is merely pandering to the republican right.

If Cain was interested in Black voters voting republican, I suspect we would see a different outreach (other than this "brainwashed" approach) to those voters, an outreach which, in all likelihood, would run counter to the republican party's right wing which would cost Cain any chance he might have at garnering the republican nomination.

And, no sooner than did Cain switch from the Brainwashing rhetoric to a specific questionable racial practice by one of the right-wing's darlings, i.e., Rick Perry, the right-wing attack-dogs, i.e., Rush Limpbaugh, pounced !!!

I tried to warn him though:

But wait, lets call the head of the RNC, Michael Steele, who toyed with the idea of reaching out to black voters (and I applauded his efforts). Ooops. Sorry, can’t call Steele – didn’t Rush & Co., nail his ass for even mentioning reaching out ???
