1. Never squat with weights on your shoulder just to work your legs. You are compressing the spine. Use a squat machine where you are at an incline.

Many spinal injuries cause a loss of sensation and muscle weakness. You don't need to be wheel chair bound.

2. Protect your neck!, get an adjustable bed to watch TV. This will keep your from tilting at extreme angles. Don't let your arms press up on the side all day.

When you get out of bed roll to the side, keep your stomach strong don't use your neck to get up.

They have studied rats, SCI can mess up your organs! SCI can manifest itself in an almost undetectable form.
 
Make sure your employer has a good Long Term Disability policy, your back problems caused by your job can be blamed on car accidents. Workers Compensation sucks.

If you feel back pain check other area such as your neck, get referred pain to other parts of your body.

Any weird shit like feeling cold when it is 90 degrees or hand shaking is a red flag.
