How much yearly income would you consider below the poverty line?

13,600 is someone's rent money for the year. Poverty in Phila is more like 35,000. That's when a person is just getting by paying for food, rent, utilities, wants, transportation, and taxes.

if you are really living in poverty you cant afford "wants"

Unlikely, the median household income is closer to 35,000. I personally know someone that only makes around 15,000 in Philly and isn't doing too bad for themselves. Hell the wife and I went more than 1 calendar year with us both being on unemployment with two dependents. Granted our unemployment wasn't bad at 1,900/month, but it was a snug fit. You just gotta know how to budget and plan for everything including wants and some entertainment.

Why do people stay in NY with that bullshit ass rent?

For most its fear of leaving all that they know. I'm still here only because where I live has all the amenities. Plus its one of the cheapest places you can live in the BX without sacrificing quality of life.

Anything under $40,000 anywhere.

:confused: That's ridiculous.. I know for a fact you can live pretty well in central NC (W-S, Greensboro, parts of Durham) on 35-40k. Heck, that's what Pepsi and Wachovia were offering people coming out of undergrad for IT.. exactly why I turned them down

I'd definitely say 25k in areas with low cost of living

Didnt know Florida was expensive.

Naw you live alright off of 25 k you won't be balling ,but you will be aight if you live the right way

rent 700

cable 60

light 60-70

food 250-300

adding a car payment if you don't have a used car makes it that much harder

smh

Car insurance
Health coverage
clothes for when you need them
car maintenance on that older used car
credit cards, if you have them

LOL

I been here since I was 3 you telling me what property cost down here fam? Rentals are going down since developers are targeting singles (ie. $675 for a one bedroom 700 sq apartment)

Florida insurance is really high as well..

You're poor making 30k down here living alone.

675 for a one bedroom ain't bad. Is everyone's insurance high or does it go by age and location?

i refuse to believe any single person can live in america on just 25K alone...

they're getting help from the govt or family members

Damn how much is rent for a single man with no kids in a decent area?

Think of of it this way, rent in a normal place will set you back at least 800. The commuter system here is still wack, so if you get a bucket, car insurance and food + phone that's about it.

Cali is overpriced for what you get man. :smh:

In atlanta, less than 30k for a family of four isn't enough.

If you're single...maybe 25. Depends on where you want to live and if you have personal transportation.

Here on the westcoast I know some people paying $1200 - 1600 for some 1-bedroom apartment rent bullshit. People just don't get it sometimes.

Anyone not doing too bad on that amount is living with someone, and/or getting some form of help from the government. Btw a 35g median is low.

This is the government's belief as to where poverty starts. Yet poverty starts well above these numbers. The working poor are people stuck between a rock and a hard place. Now "poor enough" and barely make enough.
