I read about this event today. People always refer to Wilson as a genius.

Genius compared to who? Surely not Stevie, Prince, etc.

He put out good shit, but genius?

Well, he did write just about ALL of the Beach Boys' stuff. Thats a hell of a lot of hits. When you consider that he created a unique sound, just like Prince did, and the way the term "genius" is thrown around, I don't think its a stretch to call him one.

gotta go with this.....he created a "sound"....that's more than just imagination, but innovation.....musically, that's genius shit

its the Pet Sounds album alone that gives validity to the people who use the word genius to refer to him... Top 10 rock/pop albums of all time...
just what i was gonna say. pet sounds confirms the greatness, basically changing the way top 40 sounded and was produced. For the Beach Boys at that time, pet sounds was a very unconventional album to say the least. It completely confused and surprised every fan and critic alike.

Are you kidding me? Ask Stevie Wonder if the man's a genius. The man changed the way people make records. "Good Vibrations" and shit like that, the way the songs are arranged, and the instrumentation of those records are genius. The Beatles were jealous of him. Now, that's an indication as much as anything else.

Now, Diana Ross is not a genius, but Stevie and Brian Wilson are two of the greatest innovators in the history of pop music.

That dude is a studio pioneer, an absolute lab-rat. He was an innovator in the studio and introduced modern sound engineering to music. He used the equipment available at that time to their fullest extent, right to their breaking point. He understood sounds and arranged harmonies like none other. Yes, he deserves the accolade of genius as much as the others you have mentioned.

I always thought they were a corny group and completely overrated, but I did love this song.....

Interesting.....

Well first, you have to look at Wilson's music in context of what was being made at that time. Brian Wilson created a sound in pop music that didn't exist before he came along. That alone warrants a debate on whether he should be considered a genius. The album Pet Sounds is arguably one of the best albums ever created.

You also have to kind of have to break down the elements of his music to understand why he is held in high regard. Wilson was one of the few producer/perfomers that didn't rip off Black artists and attempt to pass it off as something new. NOBODY sounded like the Beach Boys. The lush harmonies, great songwriting, and Wilson signature falsetto....the man just made great music. Even if some of the shit sounds corny by today's standard, it was still great music.

Keep in mind, just because you're referred to as a genius, that doesn't necessarily mean that you're totally above your peers. R. Kelly is considered by many to be a genius, but that doesn't mean that he's on par with Marvin Gaye or Stevie Wonder ...regardless of how many hits he's had (although I'm pretty sure that people like Stevie and Paul McCartney and others definitely consider Brian Wilson a genius) . You will ultimately be judged on more than you're hits. Dr. Dre has had plenty of hits, but I wouldn't necessarily consider him a genius, although others may.

Anyway...Brian Wilson was the shit. Go listen to songs like "Don't Worry, Baby" ....and really listen to it. Then go and listen to some other pop songs from that era. You'll see that they are worlds apart in terms of the sound and production. That dude deserves his props. Please believe.

2 of my favorite BEACH BOYS-related cuts all-time status (SLOOP JOHN B reminds me of my late-grandfather who passed away 10/31/2006 - brings a tear to my eye - he was a career fisherman who struggled in life) =

Pet Sounds changed the way people recorded music. The Beatles made the Sgt. Pepper album to try to compete with Pet Sounds. That being said, "Sail on Sailor" will always be in rotation for me.

I actually spin “Sail On, Sailor” in my DJ sets. That album, Holland, is funky as hell. I love Brian Wilson. Genius.
