How do you get a job in another city?

I'm trying to move somewhere else, but I don't wanna make the move unless I have a job locked down. I've been applying to jobs all over the country, but to no avail. I'm not even lookin for a company to front the relocation costs, I just wanna know that I'll have steady income locked down when I get there. Does the fam have any advice on how to get jobs when you apply out of state? I'm trying to go somewhere fresh and totally start over, so I wouldn't know anyone there. That eliminates the option of using a friend's address on the resume/cover letter.

Basically, what they told me is you damn near have to lie and convince the hiring company that you either

1). Already live in the city

or

2). You are already in the process of moving to the city whether you get this particular job or not.

I had friends in Houston, so I used their addresses when submitting applications. When interviews were scheduled, I just drove or flew into town. Companies really aren't trying to hire you if you don't already live in that particular city. At least that's what I've noticed over the past few years. Being a black man, I've also noticed that it's easier for black women with the same qualifications to get jobs since they fill two quotas. Good luck fam

Save at least 8G's and use the job you have now to secure an apartment. Then move. When get to your destination, get a dozen doughnuts from Dunkin early in the morning and go to the nearest temp spot.

This way you'll have a lifeline and cash coming in while you look for a real job in your new city.

Save at least 8G's and use the job you have now to secure an apartment. Then move. When get to your destination, get a dozen doughnuts from Dunkin early in the morning and go to the nearest temp spot.

This way you'll have a lifeline and cash coming in while you look for a real job in your new city.

I moved from the Houston area to south east Texas area. I got a great job offer so I relocated.

Yeah I had to do this as well also went to Google Voice and got a number in that general area and linked it to my cell phone, used a friends address. Moved from Pontiac MI to Aurora IL. The P.O. Box thing sounds like the next best thing seeing how you don't have folks to lean on.

Not that easy....in 2010 it's not what you know it's WHO you know. So a lot of times you have to know someone to get your foot in the door. How many people ask for 2+ years of prior experience? A lot....but if you know someone that knows someone then it's easier for you.

And there you have it. Just have to be willing to step outside of your comfort zone. But also once you are established you have to be willing to open up your comfort zone to someone that is new to the city as well so they can get their feet wet.

I just know it helps if you have one of those skills you can take anywhere, like plumbing or accounting or small business owner skills....

it helps having folks you know around as well but it shouldnt be a showstopper if you do not..

do your homework and research look before you leap but never be afraid to leap.

I'm in the process of this right now. Moving to Florida in December from NYS. Its fucking hard trying to get a job. I'm literally just going to wait until we get there. We have money saved up and out mortgage is only $275 a month so fuck it. Good luck.

My second contribution:

(1) Depending on your qualifications and experience you could apply for internships (free or paid). You get a feel for the city, gain some experience in your field, network, and hopefully make some bread in the process.

(2)Start small and work your way up. Like one of the posters before me mentioned, temping is a viable option.

(3)Consider using a relative's (or close friend) address on your resume.

Apply and have your plane ticket money on deck for that 2nd or 3rd interview(because they do 1st over the phone). On your cover letter, communicate you are relocating maybe for cost of living or some shit like that, and communicate your not looking for moving expenses and you can start ASAP because those are the only concerns a company has about hiring someone from out of state. Trust me fam, I've hired 6 in the past couple of years, 3 were from another state. Hell, I got hired from out of state.

true that! made that mistake by moving to this filthy ass, backwards dirty ass baltimore! Shoulda stayed in nyc.... The best way to land the job is to know someone already living in the place you want to relocate to, and hopefully, they'll have an in for you.

Man its hard. I've met a few people at work but due to our shifts we hardly work out. The city I moved to I have family here ,but we don't hang out like that. I'm joining a soft ball team but I'll see how that goes.

You moved to the A right? How has it been like trying to meet people? Like I mentioned before, it was tough but luckily I was able to find distant family in my new city. The cousin I hung out with was really outgoing, and would make an effort to get me out and about after work. Cut a lot of the bullshit that most people in new cities have to go through to meet other people.

I did all correspondence via email/snail mail/telephone...I was lucky enough to get like 3-4 interviews lined up on the same day...drove here and got out here a day early...fucked up drinking smoking and fuckin w/ this chic the night before the interviews...still nailed them the next day...got 2 offers...chose 1...almost fucked up cuz they wanted to do a drug test the next day but I lied and said I was leaving back to NY that night so they said no prob...I can take it in 2 weeks...haven't smoked weed since...that was like 4 years ago...but the main thing is (a) obviously you want to make sure it's a city where you want to live...and (b) don't move out there until a job is secured...ya it'll cost you some $$$ flying/driving back and forth for interviews but you really don't wanna be stranded in a new city w/ no job lined up...and some companies even do interviews via phone but I don't like that...I like to see them and I like them to be able to see me

That's real talk. Exactly what I did & it was tough. Just landed a job that has me back in the IT field and I moved out to Naptown in April. Make sure you know how to curb any spending habits you have & keep things basic so when you can cover all your financial bases.
