If I'm a new artist starting off with nothing what ways can I make income? I look at some of these new artist and wonder how the can even get a check? No one buys music. Streaming doesn't pay shit. You need to be hot in order to charge for features. I just see how some of these artist make a living.

The money for the artist is primarily in live performances. You need to get enough people to like your music enough to want to see you perform live.

STEP 1: Build a brand - make dope shit.. then make it accessible (think Youtube, Soundcloud, Bandcamp etc)
STEP 2: Start doing shows, as your brand develops and your fandom grows your tour money will start to look good
STEP 3: Put out an album/EP on a "pay-what-you-want" scale
STEP 4: Sell Merch to your dedicated fans
STEP 5: Once your music hits a critical mass, radio air play etc you'll start to book radio gigs/interviews which will serve to reinforce and strengthen your brand
STEP 6: Repeat Steps 1 through 5
STEP 7: PROFIT

I dunno..... just guessing :dunno:

Most don't make alot, but if you're indie and blow up you can make some decent bread off sales alone as long as you didn't spend a ton to help you blow up.

don't kno what state ur in or what type of music u do..but real talk cater to the stripclub..the stripclub circuit in certain states are very marketable to unknown and well known artist..in fact some well known artist blew up through the stripclub circuit and some has beens get bread through the stripclub circuit...u could literally make 6 figs a yr juss catering to that market..lot of paid features for u to appear/walk through the club..lot of monkey see monkey do so if 1 club see u at a spot they gonna ask u to appear at their's to...they'll ask u to appear if the song making a lil noise..than they'll ask u to appear for ur bday...if ur single makes a lil noise like gold they'll ask u to appear or if ur releasing an albulm..u could literally get booked at least 3 times a yr for each club..the bigger ur name the more ur feature money goes up..u wanna kno why so many songs sound like some tricking/sucker for pussy shit cause dudes kno how marketable the stripclub circuit is..wanna kno why everything sound like some dance beat/shake ur ass music cause they trying to get a stripclub hit to do the stripclub circuit..it's a dirty secret in the industry but the stripclub been keeping nigs paid for the past 8 yrs..by the way reg clubs/lounges be eyeing stripclub bookings t so if they see u making a lot of noise in the stripclub they start wanting to book u to for appearances/walk through...juss look at shit like fetty wap/future music to see the perfect example

Sounds about right

Get into the camp of someone who's already making money, figure out how they do it, break camp and do for self. Same as any other business.

Good fucking question lol
Curren$y seems to have the new blueprint.
Give the music away and make money doing shows.

Also, and admittedly this isn't going to be easy, you're artist is going to have to be scorching hot and rip up stages. Getting in a position like that leads to features and songwriting cred. Also, getting to know the right people helps. One thing artist don't like to hear is this: It ain't gonna be easy or a short path. Cats are gonna have to perform or go to places to be seen on off nights, when they have to go to work or school the next morning, and when they don't feel like going. You know how many "Fuck this shit!" shows we had to do, before we got signed? A lot of them! To sum it up, don't concentrate on being signed, concentrate on being hot. A big part of determining whether or not your artist makes it is the artist him or herself. My nephew adjusted his hustle. He was an artist, and decided that he'd have more success writing.

Create your own independent label and put your own music out. Master P already gave you the blueprint. If you are still getting raped by record labels then you should own stock in Vaseline. Indie artists who own their own labels will always make more cents on the dollar than any artist on a major.

Here is the shortcut hustle version.... Get hooked up with a big drug dealer/producer who has money that needs to be laundered.... Do all the shit a regular artist do, have dude cook your books and break off a little something your way for the efforts.... Eventually you will get a following due to people jocking your shine...

How'd that work out for Bleu DiVinci?

How'd that work out for Bleu DiVinci?
the truth is the op never said what type of music he does or his talents..ole boy could literally play the guitar and come to ny a play it in the train station with a bucket on the floor(tips) and make some decent bread daily..ny train/park circuit very slept on..first he has to give us an example of what he's doin than we can proceed from there on how to guide him

If u a street artist
U have to make hot club songs
You gotta have money, takes money to make money
Hit the stripclubs, pay the DJ a few dollars, pop bottles, get the promoter a few drinks
Ask to perform, hit up magazines, do photoshoot, pay your way do a couple radio interviews
It's all about perception when building ya brand
Hit the road and do some shows
Let them know u hot in your city
As long the music sound good, other city will give you a chance

How'd that work out for Bleu DiVinci?
It comes with risks, but if you do it right its very difficult for the feds to sort out... First you have to have the right artist, then the promoter has to know what the fuck he is doing and you have to move back and forth from actually making money to laundering and your book cooking skills have to be tight..

 Cold as dry ice my nigga

The only way to get on these days is to devolop a fan base here and oversees....the money will be made exclusively from performances...the whole signing to a major has been dead.

Writing for major artist is also a good little hustle if you have any skills.

They don't make money. Most never receive any substantial income

The vast majority are fronting if they aren't touring heavily or have some type of serious multimedia slant to their branding, or networked with a heavy hitting dope boy. I see it every week, mofo's fronting taking pics for IG in the studio only to put out so called mix tapes that don't do shit. I caught the tail end of it with my early releases 1999-2003. I remember when I actually used to physically drop off 300 - 400 vinyl records at time to a certain distributor in NYC and they would call me with a decent check less than a week later (Like 4 or 5 days sold out!!:eek2:). I can only imagine how it was with independent labels or artist who were fortunate enough to really get in the game in the 80's and mid 90's selling 10's of thousands of CD's at a time..

My whole philosophy has always been you ain't really winning in the music biz if you ain't make enough bread to buy a house with your savings. I know a few that have, but they got in the game mid 90's and toured like crazy!!!

Yeah, the changing times done changed the game.

Totally!! Shit is totally different than a lot of reasons I got in it for. Some days I feel like I should have followed my other dream and had become an architect!! LOL. Thank god I love music so much, I don't understand how people can do this shit now for any reason but the love, but it seems like most do. The human ego is a motherfucker..

in NYC those days are over - money laundering via record label and / or show promoter are DONE

Trust me bruh, it still works, matter of fact there are some acts you'd never suspect got put on like this... As a rule, the more talent the artist has the easier it is to pull off..

Fuck out of here, its not done blatantly as it was, back in the days... Back then they used to brag about shit and got over, now everyone is in the act including the labels who are nothing but crooked banks loaning money to artiest, even some of them know about the scam and by time the web is created, its nearly impossible to determine where the money came from and were its going, because everybody had their had in the cookie jar..
