How come houses in Texas don't have basements???

Thanks for tha info.So what areas would one look at in North Harris???

outside of 610 loop:
Jersey Village, Humble, Spring (this area is retty white, but there are blacks and Mexicans)

if you really like the south
Sugarland
Pearland (rednecks)

Atascocita in Humble had the most suitable mix of people for me. Most of the minorities are professional or working class and not ghetto. Thats why i like my area. there are many black businness owners, MDs, Lawyers, and engineers

I was looking to relocate there a couple years ago n noticed that. I can work without it ,but I tend to make the basement my sanctuary. I dont know why but basements give a much more comforting feeling than the rest of a house. My pops is the same way at his crib, just always in the basement. Shit, put a 50 inch, a pool table, a couch, refrigerator n bar in the basement, I'll rarely cum up for shit. Plus women n children tend to not want to go in the basement when u got a family, which makes it even more of a mans sanctuary.

This is true...

First link in Google.

Cliffnotes - You can do it but it would be expensive to do due to having to account for pressure that the soil there can put on the structure.

North Texas foundation issues are legendary. Matter of fact it's a super business to get into. Fixing home foundations. We have a basement but my husband designed this house for 1.

I've never seen any major flooding here and I've been here for most of my life except for college. I did see flash flooding in Humble and an hour long drive turned into an overnight stay.

where do you stay? i only been here a few years. in 2009 and 2010 when it would rain we NEVER had flooding in Humble. Whereas, westpark, MO City, Cullen and all of those areas would be really flooded

Yeah something about a basement is sacred.People can make as much noise as they want without disturbing anyone upstairs.

Later this year I'm gonna come down there and see whats up with that area.It would be good to live somewhere that can allow me to have my money stretch and still be close to civilization.I'll be done with school in 2 1/2 years hopefully.

it will take a couple years to get used to the heat and the bigots...but it is the easiest and most business friendly state. plus your money goes hella far. you would be surprised how fr 60-150k/yr goes here

the ocean is one thing i truly love out here because i fish. In LBC i used to fish the jetties in Seal beach and it was not too good. The beach is in Galveston and you can catch more than your limit on a daily basis there without a boat. Just fishing the jetties here, i have more luck than i have ever had in the pacific while onshore or in boat

I been reading all tha moving to Houston threads that have popped up on here.People kept saying tha cost of living plus homes were very cheap.
So I looked up tha houses and compared them to tha ones in my area(DMV).
Houston and ATL had some great houses for what they cost compared to my area which you wouldn't get anything like that unless you lived in tha boonies(Hagerstown,North East MD,La Plata,ETC).
But I noticed homes in Houston don't have basements. Then I looked at other parts of Texas and saw tha same thing. Why is it like that????
They have "Game Rooms" on tha second floor where tha bedrooms are at.Thats weird as hell. Then some houses have tha master bedroom on tha 1st floor.

As far as the master bedroom theory, I was told most people purchase and "grow old" in them. Meaning they keep them in the family and typically don't sell nor flip them.

Once at retirement age, some people can't go up and down the stairs as they use too in the younger days. So for convenience, the master is on the main floor....

I'm not sure how true this is.... But, there is some logic to it...

No need for an automated chair to go between floors.

One of my grandparents take 5 minutes to get into the house...

Don't forget to tell him that certain areas have M.U.D taxes. We're planning to move into Pearland and that's one of the biggest issues we looked at.

most definitely M.U.D. taxes. most of the newer developments have this. Its not that big of a deal for me. Some areas have higher M.U.D. tax than others. the reasons we didnt go to pearland was that it is really redneck there and they are in flood zone X (high risk). Plus, most of the katrina evacuees moved to the S.E. and S.W. they have a bad reputation in Houston. there were other reasons also

If you was building a house from scratch could you just design one in which the basement is on ground level and build on top of that. Basically make your foundation level your basement. That is what I would do if I lived in the South and had paper. My main level would be the second floor and up. That solves the need to worry about below ground in loose soil.

That makes more sense.Shit some townhouses are like that but have those long steps that go directly to tha second floor in tha front.

That's called a raised ranch

thats not a basement! basements are BASEments for

Your not near the airport anymore?

Nope. I need to change my status on this thing...

Atlanta was slightly different. It was due to people thinking that a 100 year flood would never happen in their lifetime and deciding to build where they did anyways. I suspect that there's a lot of other places that are just as lax with building codes that were made due to history.

True.

But after that storm come to find out that people had homes in flood plains that were built when it was somewhat common for it to be flooded. I mean older homes or newer homes where some of the maps showed flooding. The big deal here was the flooding in areas where the maps needed to be updated.

I wouldn't want a alley behind my house. Fuck that...

What's with the alley hate? If it's wide enough you don't see the garbage truck in the street, It keeps some cars out the street, and it makes the neighborhood look a little nicer...I guess depending on where you are though...I got the hood pictured in my mind...

Most of the homes in my town have driveways and garages. Garbage is put out twice a week at night (by code) and picked up early morning. Alleyways are common open areas where mischief can easily take place. No hate just not for me. No thanks...

the alleys are nothing but trouble lurking...at least in LA. niggas get bodied in the alley all the time out there

If a good rain comes thru like it did in 2006 or 2001 then yeah shit will flood...in 06 Hobby Airport was closed down and I couldnt leave my apartment off 45 south and I missed a $3000 meeting that morning in Austin...so yes different areas of town flood and the northside has areas that flood too like certain parts of humble and kingwood too...shit just doesnt happen on a consistent basis like it does off braeswood and cullen and shit like that

and pearland has rednecks in the older part near telephone rd...lot and I mean lots of black folks on the up and up have the newer homes closer to 288...Im from sunnyside...lot of my church members live out there...taxes do stop some people from moving there tho

I am originally from Detroit, MI --- live in Arkansas (for now, unfortunately), anyway, i noticed that most houses in the south do not have basements --- growing up, up north there always were basements...that is extra space (finished/unfinished) that is usually not counted in the total in the total square footage of the house...

I do not know many homes that are considered new construction or recently built homes that have basement at all. Basements are usually for older model homes that where built like 40 or so years ago and older. In Philly where the homes are old as the dirt they rest on, basements are everywhere. Same with Chicago. I have not yet seen a basement here in Florida that was not a townhouse, where the living room area and kitchen are located on the second floor and built on top of the garage.

Why would any city at or just above sea level with a relatively high chance of tropical storm/hurricane activity have a basement? Especially with the poor drainage systems in Harris & Fort Bend counties.:smh: Most houses in the south in general don't have basements though....especially in low-lying areas. That seems like a midwest thing.

Oh yeah...this is from Jan. 9th

damn, thats ugly,

but everyplace has its advantages & disadvantages!

id feel deprived not growing up knowing about 'the basement'.

Yeah I just saw your reply.
In some thread people were saying tha north is close to rednecks.
How bad is tha flooding in tha South West???

Mayne ive lived in the H all my life, the worst flooding areas are on the southside, east of southmain. You cant go wrong moving to mo city, sugarland or the newer parts of pearland close to the beltway. lots of blacks have been moving to pearland in droves, mo city is majority black. All those burbs have are nice ans have low crime rates. The Katrina folk who still live here are not on that bullshit, they are settled and have regular jobs like everybody else. And nicca dont mess with them northside burbs, they are too close to montgomery County, kkk redneck heaven. move south of i10, closer to everthing if you want to get out and do something

Dude you are the one spouting nonsense. People in the gulf region live in the swamp. Sub ground levels floors are insane in that region. Do you read post or just skim through them:smh:.

In the gulf area if you want a basement as BFK said a "raised ranch" style of home. Thanks BFK for contributing to what I said.

my house was not affected by alice, ike or the rain of last monday. its all about where you buy. and fuck a basement. one less thing to worry about
