All jokes aside. I've never heard a college "educated" football player fresh out of college not sound like a complete rap idiot during an interview. Other than Jerry Rice and Barry Sanders and most of the old timers. Yeah I know most star athletes do not even have to go to class and get a pass through college but WTF. They use wrong grammar at the wrong time. They say Axe, they say Na'msayin Na'msayin after everything. What the fuck is going on. I realize we as blacks have different speaking patterns but some of these cats sound like they have'nt spent a day in school. Yet they are graduates of college??? That shit dont bother yall?
 
it does bother me... however

language skills are learned far b4 you get to college. Plus most college english classes don't teach you anything about proper language use, they assume you learned that in 3rd grade along with everybody else. It really should be mandatory that all athletes black or not take a public speaking class

Taking public speaking is a requirement. So they have to learn something there. In english, if you have a good professor. If you're talking in class the professor will say, "Axe" is something to chop wood with, you ASK. There is no reason for an Adult to come out of a 4 year institution of higher learning speaking like a bum off the street.

hell, it doesn't even need to be broken down on the college level.

look at magic johnson, shannon sharpe, etc.

the ONLY guy that i've seen REALLY represent himself well out of college is reggie bush. dude is well-spoken, looks into the camera when he speaks, and is very articulate.

on the veteran tip, keyshawn johnson did a HELLUVA job during the draft, and i'm sure fox, cbs, nbc, and the nfl network are ALL waiting for him to retire. :yes:

on a more serious note... i'm MORE surprised at americans in-general for NOT knowing how to speak proper english, write, spell, etc. and don't EVEN get me started on mathematics. OMFG... the american school system HAS to be the worst in the world.

Bothers me a lot, but they don't have to worry about it; they have people doing all their work and their schooling is paid for. I was an RA in a sports dorm with some geechie speakin' cats and most of them (not all) couldn't form a cogent sentence if they tried. No media training whatsoever.

Only when they don't make the draft do they get that wakeup call. :smh:

It bothers your race when some of you need a good dr. or lawyer, or good business entrepreneur, and you must bring every dime you have and give it back to "another" race because you guys lack the ability to see beyond the rims, gold chains and earrings, super baggy pants, and tennis shoes. Oh! By the way. You guys don't make any of these either. Why would a college athlete (run ****** run) need to? All they are recruited to do is run around and catch a ball. I hate jock talk as well. They never say shit and it's usually: "yeah, well you know we went out there and played good football and that's what we do, play ball. We came out there and give it our best, ya know, and , ya know, we was just tryin to win." But don't let me break the ESPN daydreams of some of these fuck boys. If they didn't learn it before college, don't count on them ever learning it.

Most of them do know how to speak IMO, I have noticed that a huge portion of the NFL players are country as all hell in their speech, but not exactly speaking in broken english or some "jive" on camera...just country.

thats what happens when the have a country of schools more worried about lawsuits than the education of its kids. speaking from first hand perspective, there is no real discipline in schools. if you have it, it send your kid to a good private school where they can lean a foregin lang (latin :yes: ) at an early age.

Jerry Rice is from Mississippi cant get more country than that. He doesn't speak that way. Bo Jackson is from Alabama he doesnt either. :confused:

Public Speaking is not a requirement in college. I have a 4 year degree and have gone to two universities and it wasn't required at either. Most people think these guys go to colleges to play basketball and football. In all honestly they're actually pro teams with colleges attached to them. You should look at the majority of the degrees these guys have picked. They're fly by night degrees. Search SEC schools, Miami, and Texas A & M and you'll see what I mean.

Just curious what school you graduated from? We had to take Public Speaking in order to obtain your BA/BS. It was a requirement for all undergrads. Usually it's done your Freshman year.

Well, it starts from grade school when they become noticed as a great athlete
They get passed by all the teachers and never have to do any real work
When they get to college, they have "tutors" and an "academic center" that's supposed to "assist" them in their school work, but we know what that's really about
Also you're not required to take public speaking classes at every school, at least I nor anyone else I know was
I went to college around the same time a certain Pro Bowl DE who now plays for the Carolina Panthers did, and this guy had to be THE most inarticulate guy I've ever seen in a college classroom
I mean this guy couldn't even string together 4 English words in a row

The bottom line is if you're a star athlete you don't have to be smart or speak well
Just go out, play, and get paid...that's it.

Thats the sad thing about the draft so many of our people get fixated on the glamour and flashy lifestyles of athletes and dont bother to apply themselves to the sciences, engineering , or business these athletes have no motivation to speak proper english when they are treated like gods by everyone who realizes they have talent or could potentially make millions in the future. The vast majority of student athletes are much more articulate it's only these super talented football players that feel they are guaranteed to win.

I'm just saying thats what I've noticed...there's just some country speakin mofos in the NFL. Whether they sound like Warrick Dunn or Edgerin James, there's just alot of players that sound country in the NFL. I'm not really sayin its a good or a bad thing...just my observation. But I don't feel that the broken english/slang talkin players in the league are that overwhelming.​
