Hiphop, and everything it includes is about expression. A true artist doesn't paint a picture that doesn't come from someplace within their inner being...but given the state of music, people are just rhyming words just to get paid. There is no passion, no love, it's all about "will this song get me spins on the radio?" An artist can talk about whatever they want, but that doesn't mean the entire genre is headed in that direction. Different artists paint different pictures...Van Gogh isn't the standard.

Think about it: "sellout" is one of those words/terms that we tend to toss around in a cavalier fashion, like "love", "snitch", "genius", and "greatest ever". Rarely do we used these in their proper context. I saw someone call us "sellouts", because 2 of our songs ended up on video games. Really? We're supposed to bypass a check to live up to your definition of "real"? No, thank you. If I do a theme song for the KKK, that's called selling out, me making a song to appeal to the masses or to cash in on a current fad, that's called paying attention to trends in my industry. Like Jadakiss once said, "If I knew then what I know now, I would have been standing next to Ma$e in a shiny suit making that money."

As I said, when you consider the companies you work for, or the stuff you take on your job, you could be selling your own self out for a check.

I'm going to say it and you can like it or not, but the only reason black folks hate when rich black people sell out is because they're leaving them even further behind financially.

How many pro-black companies do you think exist out there? This rabbit hole can go as deep as you want it to go, but naturally people will say I'm going too deep so they won't have to consider what I'm saying and really examine their own lives.

I look at it this way: If you sell out for crumbs, but won't sell out for something that can TRULY better your situation, then YOU'RE the dumb-ass.

My definition of selling out is:Exchanging self, ideals, morals, beliefs, and dignity for compensation or recognition. The guy in a dress thing is so overused and unfunny, it's hack comedy...like those "black people be talking in the movies" jokes.

I'm not a big fan of the "keeping it real" motto because I was accused all throughout my teens of being a white boy for staying in and finishing my homework before going outside, using good grammar, and not wanting to engage in mischievous behavior. When someone is saying "keep it real", observe where they are at mentally and financially...because people love seeing you just as fucked up as they are.

If this is the case, then Lord Jamar is like a fat ugly dude that proudly proclaims to be faithful to his wife. Ain't nobody checking for him. If that fat dude had any options, he'd be fucking. Same with Lord Jamar. Who's checking for him commercially? It's easy to be "real" when ain't nobody buying.
